Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Entering ABM strand, it is known as the ticket to a corporate world.

To where subjects like Applied Economics, Business Ethics and

Responsibility, Accountancy, Business Math, and Principles of Marketing,

ABM students are trained to think big. Those who complete this strand will

play an important role in the corporate world.

ABM is a part of the program implemented by the Department of

Education (DepEd) through K-12 program. Senior High School is two years

of specialized upper secondary education; students may choose a

specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice

of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in

Grades 11 and 12. Each student in Senior High School can choose among

three tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and

Arts. The Academic track includes three strands: Accountancy, Business

and Management (ABM); Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS); and

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM).

By the reason that Philippines is the last country in Asia, that was

included on one of only three countries worldwide with a 10-year pre-

university cycle (Angola and Djibouti are the other two). A 13-year program

is found to be the best period for learning under basic education. It is also

the recognized standard for students and professionals globally, that is why

K-12 was implemented. Senior High School “completes” basic education by

making sure that the high school graduate is equipped for work,

entrepreneurship, or higher education. This is a step up from the 10-year

cycle where high school graduates still need further education to be ready

for the world.

It was said that K-12 Basic Education Curriculum Program is the key

to our nation’s development. The Department of Education (DepEd) is

certain that the new curriculum will solve the problem of the unemployment

in the country.

As we goes on with the said program, academic excellence becomes

one of the goals of some students. So in order to achieve this, students

need to study smartly because it is the key to the future. In order to cope

with the rapidity with which knowledge itself changes, today’s student must

seek to achieve academic excellence.

Academic excellence is the demonstrated ability to perform, achieve,

and/or excel in scholastic activities. Academic excellence has been

identified with achieving high grades and superior performance. Hence,

academic excellence is more than just making good grades, it is the

maximum development of your intellectual capacities and skills in service to

humanity. We can achieve academic excellence through our hard work,

being involved, seeking our own social responsibilities, developing

ourselves, seek opportunities and assume leadership roles.

“Excellence is not a skill but an attitude”. Everybody in this room right

now, think internally, what do these eight words mean? Excellence is not a

skill, but an attitude being certain that in order to be excellent you need to

have the most skill. But, what exactly does excellence mean? According to

the dictionary, excellence defines as “the quality of being outstanding or

extremely good.” It refers to individuals who have their own set level of

excellence. Based on their surrounding, circumstances, or whatever the

situation may be, it is an abstract value that differs from person to person.

Nowadays, academic excellence from among the youth is given

much importance. Yet, it is superbly acceptable to strive and achieve good

academic results. Students are pressured into taking more subjects that

they can handle, and this causes immense pressure among us.

Quality Education is very important for everybody in order to have a

better and successful life in the future. Students in school and college have

always been reminded to strive for excellence in their academic so that

they can graduate with flying colors and can easily get a better job compare

to those who did not well in their academic.

But how helpful Academic Excellence is? It helps you in making a

meaningful contribution to society throughout your life, receiving academic

scholarships, Admission to graduate or professional schools, being

competitive in the job market, Selection for competitive academic programs

such as summer enrichment programs or other special studies programs

during your undergraduate studies, being in a position to be of service to

those with whom you interact.

Base from Durden and Ellis quoted Staffolani and Bratti, (2002)

observed that “the measurement of students previous educational

outcomes are the most important indicators of students future

achievement”, this refers that as the higher previous appearance, better the

student’s academic performance in future endeavours. This implies that a

student’s academic excellence will be a big factor in preparing for the

student’s future success. The academic achievements of the students

impart what students can be become in the future and how does their

achievements from school affect his/her future performance in life

especially to their career.

In addition, the token of academic excellence measures the academic

performance of a student and can be a great basis of future academic gain

at university or higher level. Improving their knowledge capacities and skills

influence productive forthcoming results in the future.

The goal of the research study is to study on what are the probable

effect or correlation rather, of academic excellence that students received

in doing business after graduating as ABM Students at Perpetual Help

College Of Manila. In order to know the said 'correlations' we conducted a

limited review of current knowledge starting from getting information of

some ABM Students at PHCM by conducting a survey followed by methods

and specific hypothesis given by us that might be one of the answers from

what we want to know. This paper will conclude with a discussion of what

implication this line of research has for the said students from our findings.

For sure, there are already some researches there that are in lined

about this study that we're conducting. We ABM students in particular, want

to dig deeper and find out something that could help us in the future upon

doing business by having this as a research not only for us, but also for

those who are interested in doing business. Aside from that, we hope that

through this particular research we can find some points in improving our

skills from those people that are related in this research. We aim to provide

everyone, especially those incoming senior high students (grade 11) that

will take ABM strand as their chosen course, some tips that they can learn

from this research and the importance of different academic excellence that

they‘ll receive in the future and on how it could help them in doing a

business.

The result of this study may benefit the students by allowing them to

understand better the factors that can affect their academic performance.

They may be able to improve their academic performance with the findings

that are established by this study. With this study’s insights, the parents

may be able to understand and help their children regarding their school

matters and give them support. For the teachers, this study may help them

to recognize problems encountered by the students that may pose an effect

in their performance. They may find alternative actions on how to handle

their students. For the school administrators, they may be able to promote

thinking skills assessment in their school, letting their teachers understand

the influences of their student’s preferred learning styles that will promote

adequate learning opportunities and effective instructions.

Strong academic performance ideally leads to a college acceptance

and the path to a dream job. Likewise, most students begin their academic

lives wanting to do well in school. Not all students, however, have the

opportunity to follow this prescribed path and succeed. Many students are

prevented from going down this road due to poor academic achievement

and delinquency. There exists a consensus among many researchers that

low academic achievement and weak bonds with schools and teachers are

associated with subsequent delinquent behavior.

As a student, it is urgent to manage time effectively in order to

succeed in study and participate in the social life of school. Learn to

manage time better, proved to have a higher overall academic

performance, as well as a higher desire to perform well. The desire to

perform well could be a result of competitive character that has transferred

from activities.

Theoretical Framework

This study only focus on how academic excellence affects students

and how it will benefit them in developing their skills for a future cause of

their success. It was grounded in the assumption that students must persist

to be successful in an academic pursuit and that their goals and attitudes

are factors in this persistence.

This study based on the Theory of Academic Excellence propounded

by Hon Maji Solomon, a research scientist. According to Hon. Maji

Solomon, he states that academic excellence means Academic

performance that is extremely good. He states that, Academic excellence

involves the following.

Such as Intelligence, Intellectualism, Diligence, Talent, Creativity,

Wisdom, Insight, High grades / good grades, Success, Knowledge,

Outstanding performance, Star performance and Etc.

Yet, he further states that, the following factors contribute towards the

actualization and the manifestation of Academic excellence. There are

Bodily parts, such as organs, tissues, cells, Good health, Determination,

Zeal / curiosity, Self esteem, The use of trained and qualified teachers

which account for proper teaching, Students’ commitment towards learning,

Teachers’ commitment towards teaching, Teachers’ welfare, which enables

them to put in their best, Good parenting, Food, Money, Peace, Research,

Bursaries / scholarship, Setting of relevant questions, Awards / Rewards,

Proper marking and grading, Teachers’ workshop / seminar for effective

and efficient servicedelivery, Quiz competition, Moral Behaviour, Good

Judgment, Good management culture / supervision, Continuous

Assessment (C.A), Examination, Results / certificates etc.

Hon. Maji Solomon states that, high grades are involved in Academic

excellence and the world is a habitable place of enormous possibilities.

We also found that, student’s academic performance occupies a very

important place in education as well as in the learning process. It is

considered as a key criterion to judge one’s total potentialities and

capacities (Nuthana&Yenagi, 2009) which are frequently measured by the

examination results. It is used to pass judgment on the quality of education

offered by academic institutions. In fact, it is still the most topical debate in

higher learning institutions that caused great concern to educators and

researchers due to the alarming examination performance of students.

In a more recent meta-analysis, Crede and Kuncel (2008) found that

non-cognitive factors like study habit, skill and study motivation, among

other attitudinal constructs, accounted for incremental variance in academic

performance beyond standardized tests and previous grades. Moreover, a

literature review by Nagaraju (2004) pointed out that, for good academic

success, good study habits and attitudes are important. Hence, it is

imperative and desirable that a probe into the pattern of study habits and

attitudes of students be made.

Furthermore, Study habit is the pattern of behavior adopted by

students in the pursuit of their studies that serves as the vehicle of learning.

It is the degree to which the student engages in regular acts of studying

that are characterized by appropriate studying routines (e.g. reviews of

material, frequency of studying sessions, etc.) occurring in an environment

that is conducive to studying. Study attitudes, on the other hand, refers to a

student’s positive attitude toward the specific act of studying and the

student’s acceptance and approval of the broader goals of college

education (Crede and Kuncel, 2008). In short, study habits and attitudes of

students are determined through their time management ability, work

methods, attitudes toward teachers and acceptance of education.

A review of literature highlighted the importance of students study

habits and attitudes in their academic performance. According to Menzel,

cited by Rana and Kausar (2011), many students fail not because they lack

ability but because they do not have adequate study skills. Students who

have difficulty in college frequently do not have adequate study habits that

affect their academic achievement. A central problem noted was that many

of these students had not learned how to take effective notes and manage

time for studying (cited by Mutsotso S.N. &Abenga E.S., 2010). Moreover,

a study by Nagaraju (2004) found that students usually do not devote

sufficient time to their studies and seldom have proper study habits.

Efficient study habits are associated with a favorable attitude toward

learning in general. As cited by Otto (1978), beliefs in the value of

intellectual pursuits and in the importance of education are positively

related to academic performance. An important aspect of a student’s

attitude toward education is the value he sees in what he has to learn. In

the study of Sarwaret. al (2010), it was discovered that a significant

relationship between student attitudes and academic performance exists.

Another research found discrepancy between the study attitudes of high

and low-achieving students. High-achieving students had a more positive

attitude toward study in that they detected and reacted positively to the

favorable aspects of the situation they found themselves in, while the low-

achieving students tended to be fault-finders, reacting to the negative

aspects of study such as distractions and minor annoyances. The high-

achieving students found tertiary work an interesting challenge, accepted

the restrictions and conformed to the demands made upon them more

readily, while the low achievers appeared to lack high-level motivation. The

more successful group was also found to be more realistic and

discriminating in their assessment of those situations which were highly

relevant to scholastic achievement, such as discipline and work priorities,

and they were better organized in both their work and leisure activities.

In terms of attitude towards teachers, the high achievers generally

have a positive attitude towards teachers. For instance, as compared to low

achievers, the high achievers more often say that their teachers are

competent, impartial, and interested in their duties (Sarwar, M., Bashir, M.,

Khan, M.N., & Khan, M.S., 2009). Yu (2011) in his study revealed that

among the SHSA factors examined, student perception of teacher

effectiveness influence accounting performance.

In the theory on the Effective Schools Model by Lezotte (2010).

According to Lezotte (2010), there are seven correlates of effective schools

- strong instructional leadership, clear and focused mission, safe and

orderly schools, climate of high expectations for success, frequent

monitoring of student progress, positive home-school relations, and

opportunity to learn/time on task. According to Lezotte (2010), strong

instructional leaders are proactive and seek help in building team

leadership and a culture conducive to learning and professional growth. In

the effective school, the principal and others act as instructional leaders

and effectively and persistently communicate and model the mission of the

school to staff, parents, and students.

Having a clear and focused vision and mission means everyone

knows where they are going and why. A clear focus assists in aligning

programs and activities for school improvement. To effectively determine a

specific focus, school leadership and stakeholders use a collaborative

process to target a few school goals and then build consensus around

them. A safe and orderly school is defined as a school climate and culture

characterized by reasonable expectations for behaviour, consistent and fair

application of rules and regulations, and caring, responsive relationships

among adults and students (Lezotte, 2010). Classrooms are warm and

inviting, and learning activities are purposeful, engaging, and significant.

Personalized learning environments are created to increase positive

relationships among students and between students and their teachers.

Students feel that they belong in the school community, and children are

valued and honoured; their heritage and backgrounds are viewed as

“assets,” not deficiencies.

In a climate of high expectations, the mantra “all students can learn”

must be followed by instructional practices and teacher behaviour that

demonstrate that teachers believe in the students, believe in their own

efficacy to teach students to high standards, and will persist in teaching

them. Teaching advanced skills and teaching for understanding together

with basic skills are required for all students to achieve at high levels.

Frequent monitoring of teaching and learning requires paying

attention both to student learning results and to the effectiveness of school

and classroom procedures (Lezotte, 2010). Learning is monitored by

tracking a variety of assessment results such as test scores, student

developed products, performances, and other evidence of learning.

Teaching is monitored by teachers themselves through self-reflection and

by supervisors for program and teacher evaluation. Assessment results are

used for 12 planning instruction for individual students as well as for

school-wide decision making and planning. Classroom and school

practices are modified based on the data.

According to Lezotte (2010), family and community involvement is a

general term used to describe a myriad of activities, projects, and programs

that bring parents, businesses, and other stakeholders together to support

student learning and schools. Families and other adults can be involved in

the education of young people through a variety of activities that

demonstrate the importance of education and show support and

encouragement of students learning. These are legitimate approaches for

involvement and do not necessarily require adults spending time at the

school site.

Opportunity to learn and student time on a task simply means that

students tend to learn most of the lessons they spend time on. Time on

task implies that each of the teachers in the school has a clear

understanding of what the essential learner objectives are, grade-by-grade

and subject-by-subject. Once it is clear what students should be learning,

they should be given time to learn it. In an effective school, teachers

allocate a significant amount of classroom time to instruction on the

essential skills. Students of all abilities, races, gender, and socioeconomic

status have equal opportunities to learn (Lezotte, 2010).

The theory was relevant to this study in that the seven correlates of

effective schools require effective leadership in the part of the school

administrators. This is in line with Sullivan and Glanz‟s (2000) assertion

that a prime task of school leaders is to exercise instructional leadership of

the kind that results in a shared vision of the directions to be pursued by

the school, and to manage change in ways that ensure that the school is

successful in realizing the vision. By identifying the correlates of well

performing schools in Kenya, the study tests Lezotte‟s (2010) Effective

Schools 13 Model, and also suggests measures that low performing

schools can take to improve academic performance.

Aside from that, Academic success has a great influence on a

student’s self-esteem, motivation, and perseverance in higher education.

Poor academic performance or high failure rates may result in

unacceptable levels of attrition, reduced graduate throughput and

18

increased cost of education. This also reduces admission opportunities for

tertiary students seeking higher degrees. Hence, students’ academic

performance has always been a topic of interest for educators. Educators

and researchers have long been interested in identifying and understanding

the variables that contribute to academic excellence. Many researchers

have identified demographic, socio-economic, family and school factors as

variables contributing to students’ academic performance.

Academic performance according to the Cambridge University

Reporter is frequently defined in terms of examination performance. In this

study academic performance was characterized by the overall performance

in each year which culminates in a Grade Point Average (GPA).

Academic Achievement or Academic Performance is the extent to

which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their short or long-term

educational goals. Cumulative GPA and completion of educational degrees

such as High School and bachelor's degrees represent academic

achievement.

Academic achievement is commonly measured

through examinations or continuous assessments but there is no general

agreement on how it is best evaluated or which aspects are most important

—procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such

as facts.

According to Minnesota (2007) “the higher education performance is

depending upon the academic performance of graduate students”. Durden

and Ellis quoted Staffolani and Bratti, (2002) observed that “the

measurement of students previous educational outcomes are the most

important indicators of students future achievement”, this refers that as the

higher previous appearance, better the student’s academic performance in

future endeavours.

Lot of studies have been conducted in the area of students

achievement and these studies identify and analyze the number of factors

that affect the academic performance of the student at school, college and

even at university level. Their finding identify students’ effort, previous

schooling, parent’s educational background, family income, self motivation

of students, age of student, learning preferences and entry qualification of

students as important factors that have effect on student’s academic

performance in different setting. The utility of these studies lies in the need

to undertake corrective measures that improve the academic performance

of graduate students.

It is generally assumed that the students who showed better or higher

performance in the starting classes of their studies also performed better in

future academic years at degree level. Everyone can be surprised with this

assumption if it could be proved scientifically. From the last two decades it

has been noticed significantly that there is great addition in research

literature and review material relating to indicators of academic

achievement with much emphasis on this dialogue, whether traditional

achievement measures of academic performance are best determinants of

future academic gain at university or higher level or innovative measures.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents a selection of literature and studies that has a

bearing on present study.

Foreign Literature

Tharenou (2001), writing in the Journal of Occupational and

Organizational Psychology, discussed how many researchers have

attempted to show that motivation and success in training are highly

correlated. The choice of a career, and the student’s ability to pursue that

career, might be highly motivating factors.

According to AnshuNarad and Bilkees Abdullah (2016), Academic

performance of students is the centre around which the whole education

system revolves. The success and failure of any educational institution is

measured in terms of academic performance of students. Not only the

schools, but parents also have very high expectations from students with

respect to their academic performance, as they believe that better

academic results may lead to better career options and future security.

Academic performance refers to the knowledge attained and designated by

marks, assigned by teacher. In educational context, academic performance

is the educational goal to be achieved by a student, teacher or institution

over a certain period and is measured either by examinations or continuous

assessments and the goal may differ from one individual or institution to

another.

Makewa, Role and Yegoh (2011), The school environment can play

an active role in promoting the all round development of children. Healthy

environment in the school helps the child in making social adjustment.

Satisfaction of child with the behavior of class follows, teachers, head of the

institution, methods of teaching, time table, co-curricular activities influence

his performance in academics, adjustment in life and society. The child

spends most of his time in school, and this environment exerts a different

influence on his performance through curricula, teaching techniques and

relationship between teacher and student. School climate had a significant

influence on the academic performance of students.

Nuthana and Yenagi (2009), Student’s academic performance

occupies a very important place in education as well as in the learning

process. It is considered as a key criterion to judge one’s total potentialities

and capacities which are frequently measured by the examination results. It

is used to pass judgment on the quality of education offered by academic

institutions. In fact, it is still the most topical debate in higher learning

institutions that caused great concern to educators and researchers due to

the alarming examination performance of students.

Crede and Kuncel (2008), In a more recent meta-analysis, they found

that non-cognitive factors like study habit, skill and study motivation, among

other attitudinal constructs, accounted for incremental variance in academic

performance beyond standardized tests and previous grades. Moreover, a

literature review by Nagaraju (2004) pointed out that, for good academic

success, good study habits and attitudes are important. Hence, it is

imperative and desirable that a probe into the pattern of study habits and

attitudes of students made.

Tinto (1975, 1998) from his interaction student attrition model, he

considers that students have a variety of educational experiences,

competences and skills, values as well as family and community

backgrounds before they enter into higher education. As a result, both

individual and social attributes will influence the student’s integration into

higher educa- tion. According to Tinto (1975, 1998), students not only need

to persist in their study in order to graduate (i.e. academic integration), but

they also need to participate in the student culture, both within and outside

the immediate context of the learning environment (i.e. social integration).

Severiens and Wolff (2008) found that students who feel at home,

who are well con- nected to fellow-students and teachers and who take part

in extra-curricular activities are more likely to graduate. Also Wilcox et al.

(2005) found that social support by family and friends (i.e. social networks

of students) has a positive influence on the study-success of first-year

students.

Baker and Siryk (1999) in line with Tinto’s interaction model,

considers detected academic and social integration to be influential on

study performance. Baker and Siryk (1999) distin- guish four concepts in

academic integration: academic-, social-, personal- & emotional adjustment

and attachment. Academic adjustment refers to the degree of a student’s

success in coping with various educational demands such as motivation,

application, performance and satisfaction with the academic environment.

Social adjustment describes how well students deal with the interpersonal-

societal demands of a study, such as making friends, being part of social

activities or being able to work in groups. The personal and emotional

adjustment scale indicates the level of psychological and physical distress

while adapting to the local academic way-of-life. Finally, attachment reflects

the degree of commitment to the educational-institutional goals. In a large

number of studies in US colleges, the four concepts of academic

adjustment are positively related with study progress and study

performance (Baker and Siryk 1999).

Ali Shoukat et al. (2013), writings from the American Journal of

Educational Research 1, Students academic gain and learning

performance is affected by numerous factor including gender, age,

teaching faculty, students schooling, father/guardian social economic

status, residential area of students, medium of instructions in schools,

tuition trend, daily study hour and accommodation as hostelries or day

scholar. Many researchers conducted detailed studies about the factors

contributing student performance at different study levels.

According to Minnesota (2007) the higher education performance is

depending upon the academic performance of graduate students. Durden

and Ellis quoted Staffolani and Bratti, (2002) observed that “the

measurement of students previous educational outcomes are the most

important indicators of students future achievement, this refers that as the

higher previous appearance, better the student’s academic performance in

future endeavours.

Graetz (1995) conducted a study on socio-economic status of the

parents of students and concluded that the socio economic background

has a great impact on student’s academic performance, main source of

educational imbalance among students and student’s academic success

contingent very strongly on parent’s socio economic standard. Considine

and Zappala (2002) also having the same views as Graetz (1995), in their

study on the influence of social and economic disadvantage in the

academic performance of school students noticed, where the parents or

guardians have social, educational and economical advantage definitely

strengthen the higher level success in future. But it is also noted that these

parents make available sufficient psychological and emotional shore up to

their children by providing good educational and learning environment that

produce confidence and the improvement of skills needed for success.

According to Eamon (2005) “Those students usually come out from

low socio-economic status or area show low performance in studies and

obtained low scores as compared to the other students or their counter

parts”. It is also assumed that children learning outcome and educational

performance are strongly affected by the standard and type of educational

institution in which students get their education. The educational

environment of the school one attends sets the parameters of students’

learning outcomes.

Considine and Zappala (2002) quoted Sparkles (1999) showed that

schools environment and teachers expectations from their students also

have strong influence on student performance.

Kwesiga (2002) approved that performance of the students is also

influenced by the school in which they studied but he also said that number

of facilities a school offers usually determine the quality of the school,

which in turn affect the performance and accomplishment of its students.

Sentamu (2003) argue that schools influence educational process in

content organization, teacher and teaching learning and in the end

evaluation of the all. All these educationists and researchers agreed with

this principle that schools put strong effect on academic performance and

educational attainment of students.

Miller and Birch (2007) summarized the views of many researcher

and educationist in their study on the influence of high school attended on

university performance. Their study let the research scholars to

hypothesize that the background to the students positively correlates with

the academic attainment of graduate students. It is concluded that the type

of schools in which students studies greatly influence the educational

performance and academic achievement of the students.

According to MeenuDev, Ph.D (2016), writing in the Journal of

Education and Practice, Academic achievement of students especially at

the elementary school level is not only a pointer to the effectiveness or

otherwise of schools but a major determinant of the future of youths in

particular and the nation in general.

Aremu and Sokan (2002) Learning outcomes have become a

phenomenon of interest to all and this account for the reason why scholars

have been working hard to untangle factors that militate against good

academic performance. This phenomenon has been variedly referred in

literature as academic achievement, or scholastic functioning. Academic

achievement of learners has attracted attention of scholars, parents, policy-

makers and planners.

Mainemelis C, Boyatzis RE, Kolb DA (2001) as in their Experential

Learning Theory (ELT), learning style of a person can be defined in terms

of preferred methods used by an individual for perceiving and transforming

his/her learning experiences.

Many studies have been conducted in different disciplines using ELT as a

framework. In academic literature the most published research on learning

styles is on education discipline, followed by business management

and computer science engineering. The focus of educational research on

learning styles emphasized on matching student learning styles with

curriculum and teaching styles of instructors.

Amany, S. (2001) from the College Student Journal Vol. 35, No. 2,

The person’s internal goals and specific needs shape an his/her approach

towards learning, resulting in a dominant learning style. The alignment

between dominant learning styles of students and teaching styles of

instructor has strong implications for success in academic disciplines. The

cohesion and compatibility between course major and learning styles is,

infact, one of the most important factors to consider when deciding on an

academic major.

Local Literature

Dezmon (1995) proposed that academic achievement is associated

with cognitive as well as non-cognitive variables. The cognitive variables

are the academic grades, class ranks, test scores, and scholastic aptitude

test scores. There are however, other non-cognitive variables associated

with the academic achievements of students that are of much significance.

According to Magpily, M.P. and Mercado, J. (2014) from the Athens

Journal of Education, Academic performance remains to be measured

through the ordinal scale of general weighted average (GWA) and

continues to be the best predictive variable pertaining to academic

success. A student is often labeled as high achieving, average, and low

achieving based on his or her GWA.

The students’ academic achievement plays an important role in producing

the best quality graduates who will become great leaders and manpower

for the country contributing to the nation’s economic and social

development (Ali, Jusoff, Ali, Mokhtar, & Salamt, 2009).

Magpily, M.P. and Mercado, J. (2014) concluded The parents’ highest

education, employment, and marital status, students’ residence, type of

family, birth order, number of hours of sleep, hours per week of study

outside class, specific place, regular time, and method of study, body mass

index, regular breakfast and lunch intake, frequency of snack time, diet

after school job, and frequency of social activity do not affect students’

academic performance. The results of the study support the belief that the

health of the body is directly related to the cognitive abilities of the mind.

According to Aranda, Ma.R. and Zamora, J. (2016) found out that in

six learning styles namely Independet, Avoidant, Collaboartive, Dependent,

Challenging and Participant that was used , a majority in the experimental

group fall under dependent category while in a control group majority fall

under collaborative and participant with the same number of students.

There is a significant difference in the pre-test of experimental and control

groups and there is a significant difference in overall mean of the control

group rather than the two experimental group because differentiated

instruction was not yet administered. But after the application of

differentiated instruction and post-test was given, there was an

increase in academic performance of the experimental group.

Students in the experimental group had an increased in the academic

performance in their pre-test and post-test. It is noted that within each

category of learning styles students performed better when the

differentiated instruction was administered.

Lezotte (2010).In the theory on the Effective Schools Model. There

are seven correlates of effective schools - strong instructional leadership,

clear and focused mission, safe and orderly schools, climate of high

expectations for success, frequent monitoring of student progress, positive

home-school relations, and opportunity to learn/time on task. According to

Lezotte (2010), strong instructional leaders are proactive and seek help in

building team leadership and a culture conducive to learning and

professional growth. In the effective school, the principal and others act as

instructional leaders and effectively and persistently communicate and

model the mission of the school to staff, parents, and students.

Having a clear and focused vision and mission means everyone knows

where they are going and why. A clear focus assists in aligning programs

and activities for school improvement. To effectively determine a specific

focus, school leadership and stakeholders use a collaborative process to

target a few school goals and then build consensus around them. A safe

and orderly school is defined as a school climate and culture characterized

by reasonable expectations for behaviour, consistent and fair application of

rules and regulations, and caring, responsive relationships among adults

and students (Lezotte, 2010). Classrooms are warm and inviting, and

learning activities are purposeful, engaging, and significant. Personalized

learning environments are created to increase positive relationships among

students and between students and their teachers. Students feel that they

belong in the school community, and children are valued and honoured;

their heritage and backgrounds are viewed as “assets,” not deficiencies.

Tannenbaum (1997). Success in any meaningful endeavor is marked

by a history of high expectations that provide the challenge and inspiration

necessary to press the individual to his/her highest level of performance.

Though there are supportive components of success – environment,

general and special abilities, personal work habits and attitudes, and even

chance, the central factor is high expectations. One’s own expectations of

oneself are important in the sense that people usually set their goals first

and then develop their action plans accordingly. Others’ expectations of

individuals are also critical, since people tend to strive to accomplish what

is expected of them. In both cases, without high expectations, individuals

invariably drift toward mediocrity or even failure.

Henderson and Berla (2004). Argue that the most accurate predictor

of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status, but the

extent to which that student's family is able to: create a home environment

that encourages learning; express high (but not unrealistic) expectations for

their children's achievement and future careers; and become involved in

their children's education at school and in the community. Henderson and

Berla (2004) argue that when parents are involved in their children’s

education at home they do better in school.

Nyagosia, P.O. (2011). In his study, it shows that academic

performance can be influenced by a number of factors. Studies were

identified showing that effective instructional leadership correlates with

school improvement and effectiveness. Focus on school mission has also

emerged as an important determinant of school effectiveness, that there is

a clearly articulated school mission through which the staff shares an

understanding of and commitment to instructional goals, priorities,

assessment procedures, and accountability.

Another factor identified is school safety and orderliness, whereby reviewed

literature shows multiple factors within the area of school climate that are

positively linked to students academic achievement and social well-being. It

also emerges from the literature that expectations for success significantly

influences academic performance.

Pendergrass, J. F. (2008). Their study determines the reasons for the

choice of an aviation career, and whether those reasons had a relationship

with academic success in the students’ chosen field of training. Students

who were well informed were more likely to have career goals that would

allow them to be integrated into the program, and the school, of their

choice. These students were apparently better prepared to deal with the

problems they encountered in school because they understood how the

experiences in school would help them reach their career goals.

Groccia’s (1992) position was that students’ externally-acquired

attitudes and expectations affect the outcome of their college experience

and that “students who are pursuing identified majors and following career

paths find it easier to adjust to the academic, social, and emotional

demands that come with college life”.

Stage and Hossler (2000) agreed that students’ externally-acquired

views of self are related to their academic success. They also believed

there is a relationship between students’ goals and their success in college

and that how students have gathered information about college and

careers may be linked to retention. They proposed that the effects of

external influences such as parents, teachers, and friends on students’

career choices may play a role in students’ “subsequent satisfaction, and

possibly ultimate persistence”.

Linnenbrink and Pintrich (2002) theorized that motivation was

multifaceted, containing at least four separate components. One of the

components affecting student academic success was intrinsic motivation.

Motivation is a dynamic trait according to Linnenbrink and Pintrich, and

students’ personal interests have the potential to influence motivation, and

thereby influence academic achievement.

Kamens (1971) studied the effects of college size on occupational

choice and college attrition. Kamens postulated that when students

believed a school could provide them with the training needed to reach

their career goals, they were more likely to persist in their training. He also

found no relationship between school size and student attrition when

individual traits were held constant. Career choice, and the ability of the

school to deliver the required training, were major factors in student

persistence.

Kuh et al. (2005) humorously suggested that the way to increase

student success is to only admit well-prepared, academically talented

students. Since this approach is unacceptable, institutions have

implemented programs intended to reduce academic failure. Identifying “at

risk” students, remedial courses, and tutoring and mentoring are some of

the resources aimed to increase student success and retention.

Schiefele et al. (1992). Much research has been conducted

concerning the relationship between motivation and student academic

achievement. Recently researchers have also begun to investigate the

relationship between interests and academic success. There have been

some studies of how interest in a field of study could motivate students to

be more successful in college.

Schiefele, Krapp, and Winteler (1992) listed interests, such as

preferences for a subject area, as one probable reason for academic

success. Students in secondary schools often develop interests in

computers and technology. Following these interests sometimes leads the

students into careers filled with computers and high technology. Those

students who then find their training interesting are more likely to be

motivated to persist in this training. According to Spangler (1994) “students

do best when studying something of interest”

Harackiewicz, Tanner, Barron, and Elliott (2002), in their study of

achievement goals and ability, observed that schools have traditionally

relied on standardized test scores and high school academic performance

to predict college success.

Zimmerman, B. J. (1990) has revealed that students who are self-

regulating, who set goals or plans, and who try to monitor and control their

own cognition, motivation, and behavior predicated upon these goals are

more likely to do much better in school. Stresses that there is a growing

pedagogical need to comprehend how students develop the capability and

motivation to regulate their own learning. Zimmerman believes that when

students monitor their responding and attribute outcomes to their

strategies, their learning becomes self-regulated, and they exhibit

increased self-efficacy, greater intrinsic motivation, and higher academic

achievement.

Gasco et al. (2014) noted that motivation plays an important role in

learning because it greatly explains academic performance. Students are

supposedly capable of instigating, modifying, and sustaining information.

Further, the research showed that students’ motivations and strategy use

have some impact on student performance.

According to Ali, Jusoff, Ali, Mokhtar, &Salamt, 2009 he students’

academic achievement plays an important role in producing the best quality

contributing to the nation’s economic and social development.

According to Farkas, 2003, the word non-cognitive has been

employed in the fields of economics and sociology more extensively than

in the domains of psychology and education, and it is used quite broadly,

According to Farkas, 2003, “Most of the effects of schooling on

occupational and earnings attainment are due, not to the effects of

schooling on cognitive skills as measured by test scores, but to the

correlation between schooling and various non-cognitive traits.”

Chiu et al. (2012) demonstrated that the education level of the

students’ fathers had the greater impact on academic achievement. This

contradicted the results of the study by Ortiz &Dehon (2008) that the

fathers’ occupational activity and the mothers’ level of education (Ortiz

Karemera, Reuben, &SillahSillah (2003) found that the level of education

and social status of parents were factors conducive to positive college

of any country. Education is the responsibility of the state and government

who should make every possible effort to provide it on an ever interesting

and increasing scale in accordance with the national resources.

According to Koontz and Weihrich (1988) postulates that an

organized enterprise does not exist in a vacuum; it is dependent on its

environment in which it is established. They add that the inputs from the

environment are being received by the organization, which then transforms

them into outputs. As adapted in this study, the Freshmen students are the

inputs with different social economic backgrounds and are from various

school backgrounds, when they get into the organization which in this study

is the Department of Economics, the faculty-to-student involvement

transforms them through the process of teaching and learning and the

students output is seen through their academic performance. This further

explains that the external and previous environment is not a predictor of

academic performance of students. The new environment will determine

their academic performance through the curriculum offered, competence of

According to Rodriguez (2007) considers that academic failure as the

situation in which the subject does not attain the expected achievement

according to his or her abilities resulting in an altered personality which

affects all other aspects of life. Similarly, Tapia notes that while the current

Educational System perceives that the students fails if she or she does not

pass, more appropriate for determining academic failure is whether the

students perform below his or her potential.

In 2007, Ruby Payne indicated that low achievement can be closely

correlated with poverty. In the United States, students who come from

impoverished families are more likely to have problems in school than

students who come from middle-class or upper class families.

According to TeresoTullao Jr. and Rivera, John Paulo (2009) added

that another important result of the study is the positive impact of the

employment status and educational attainment of the household head to

school participation. For the earlier, school participation can be assured if

the household head is employed. For the latter, such result emanates from

the culture of education where educated parents beget more educated

children.

According to Kausar (2011), many students fail not because they lack

ability but because they do not have adequate study skills.
