C. Samples: For each type of insulation and jacket indicated. Identify each Sample, describing
product and intended use.
1. Sample Sizes:
a. Preformed Pipe Insulation Materials: 300 mm long.
b. Sheet Form Insulation Materials: 300 mm square.
c. Jacket Materials for Pipe: 300 mm long.
d. Sheet Jacket Materials: 300 mm square.
e. Manufacturer's Color Charts: For products where color is specified, show the full
range of colors available for each type of finish material.
D. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer.
E. Material Test Reports: from a qualified testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction
indicating, interpreting, and certifying test results for compliance of insulation materials, sealers,
attachments, cements, and jackets, with requirements indicated. Include dates of tests and test
methods employed.
F. Field quality-control reports
G. Certification from the local authorities like the local municipality and local civil defense to be
provided along with the submittals to ensure that procurement and installation of this material is
upto the required standard for that geography.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. Installer Qualifications: Skilled mechanics who have successfully completed an apprenticeship
program or another craft training program certified by the Department of Labor, Bureau of
Apprenticeship and Training.
B. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Insulation and related materials shall have fire-test-response
characteristics mandated by authorities having jurisdiction and as determined by testing identical
products per ASTM E 84, by a testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having
jurisdiction. Factory label insulation and jacket materials and adhesive, mastic, tapes, and cement
material containers, with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency.
1. Flame-spread index of 25 or less, and smoke-developed index of 50 or less.
C. Mockups: Before installing insulation, build mockups for each type of insulation and finish listed
below to demonstrate quality of insulation application and finishes. Build mockups in the location
indicated or, if not indicated, as directed by Architect. Use materials indicated for the completed
Work.

a. One 3m section of DN 50 straight pipe.


b. One each of a 90-degree threaded, welded, and flanged elbow.
c. One each of a threaded, welded, and flanged tee fitting.
d. One DN 50 or smaller valve, and one DN 65 or larger valve.
e. Four support hangers including hanger shield and insert.
f. One threaded strainer and one flanged strainer with removable portion of insulation.
g. One threaded reducer and one welded reducer.
h. One pressure temperature tap.
i. One mechanical coupling.
2. Ductwork Mockups:
a. One 3m section each of rectangular and round straight duct.
b. One each of a 90-degree mitered round and rectangular elbow, and one each of a
90-degree radius round and rectangular elbow.
c. One rectangular branch takeoff and one round branch takeoff from a rectangular
duct. One round tee fitting.
d. One rectangular and round transition fitting.
e. Four support hangers for round and rectangular ductwork.
3. Equipment Mockups:
a. One chilled-water pump and one heating-hot-water pump.
b. One tank or vessel.
c. For each mockup, fabricate cutaway sections to allow observation of application
details for insulation materials, adhesives, mastics, attachments, and jackets.
d. Notify Engineer seven days in advance of dates and times when mockups will be
constructed.
e. Obtain Architect's approval of mockups before starting insulation application.
f. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract
Documents contained in mockups unless Engineer specifically approves such
deviations in writing.
g. Maintain mockups during construction in an undisturbed condition as a standard for
judging the completed Work.
h. Demolish and remove mockups when directed.
D. For all projects, the pipe and duct insulation products procured should be certified under the
Authorities Having Jurisdiction. It will be the manufacturers’ and suppliers’ liability for any legal
action that might result on account of selling of insulation products that do not meet the standard
requirements and regulations of relevant Auhorities Having Jurisdiction. Contractors’ procuring the
insulation material are to ensure that the relevant certificates and approvals from the local
authorities are valid and in place before accepting any submittals from the manufacturer’s and
suppliers.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Packaging: Insulation material containers shall be marked by manufacturer with appropriate ASTM
standard designation, type and grade, and maximum use temperature.

1.6 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate size and location of supports, hangers, and insulation shields specified in Division 23
Section "Hangers and Supports for HVAC Piping and Equipment."
B. Coordinate clearance requirements with piping Installer for piping insulation application duct
Installer for duct insulation application, and equipment Installer for equipment insulation
application. Before preparing piping and ductwork Shop Drawings, establish and maintain
clearance requirements for installation of insulation and field-applied jackets and finishes and for
space required for maintenance.

1.7 SCHEDULING
A. Schedule insulation application after pressure testing systems. Insulation application may begin
on segments that have satisfactory test results.
B. Complete installation and concealment of plastic materials as rapidly as possible in each area of
construction.

1.8 WARRANTY
A. Equipment, materials and workmanship incorporated into the work shall be warranted for a period
of one year from the time of system acceptance.
B. Within this period, upon notice by the Owner, any defects in the work provided under this section
due to faulty materials, methods of installation or workmanship shall be promptly (within 48 hours
after receipt of notice) repaired or replaced by this contractor at no expense to the Owner.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. All systems are to have been tested and approved by the Consultant prior to installation of
insulation
B. All thermal insulation shall be non-corrosive to the metal, water repellent and fire retardant.
C. All insulating materials shall be proofed against rotting, mould, fungus growth and attack by
vermin.
D. Materials and their method of application shall not constitute a known risk to health during
application or use.
E. Thermal conductivity values shall be tested in accordance with BS 2972.
F. The uses of galvanized or zinc coated insulation steel jacketing and accessories on or near
austenitic stainless steel and austenitic nickel steel/alloy equipment and piping, is prohibited.
G. Dissimilar metals and materials subject to galvanic corrosion shall not be installed in contact with
one another.
H. Where the complete assembly is liable to mechanical damage in use, the final finish shall be
sufficiently strong to ensure that the insulation does not become exposed.
I. Materials in contact shall be compatible and shall not cause corrosion of degradation under normal
site conditions.
J. Insulation materials and finishes shall be inherently proof against rotting, mould and fungal growth
and attack by vermin, be non-hygroscopic and in all respect, be suitable for continuous use
throughout the operating temperatures and within the environment where installed.
K. Materials shall be free from objectionable odour at the temperature at which they are to be used.
L. The insulation shall be suitable for the specified conditions of use without the physical properties
falling outside the tolerances allowed in the appropriate British Standard for the material.
M. Protect insulated stainless steel surfaces from the risk of stress corrosion in accordance with the
recommendations of BS 5970.

2.2 FIRE PERFORMANCE


A. All insulating materials are required to meet the stated Fire Performance of the Authority
Having Jurisdiction, and references to any standard in this specification.
B. The whole of the insulation work shall be carried out by an approved specialist insulation
contractor. All allowances shall be included for arranging a specialist subcontractor accordingly
and for informing the specialist subcontractor of all conditions relating to contract and for
coordinating his works with the remainder of the Works.

C. In addition to complying with the relevant standards, all insulating material shall be free from
asbestos.
D. The insulating material shall be acceptable only if they are equal to or better than the grades or
classes of the fire resistance as follows:
1. BS 4735, Class Q, for burning rate nil, and not producing melted droplets
2. BS 476 Part 4, for non-combustible grade
3. BS 476 Part 5, Class P, for not easily ignitable
4. BS 476 Part 7, for fire propagation index
5. BS 476 Part 7, Class 1, for surface spread of flame
6. BS 476 Part 9, for production of emitted smoke shall not gibe more than 35% obstruction of
the light beam.
E. All insulation finishes and covering shall be classified as Class 1 surface spread when
tested in accordance with BS 476, Part 7. They shall not in any way attack the insulation or the
surface to which the insulation is being applied and shall be suitable for working temperatures.
All adhesive, mastics, coatings, sealers and primers shall be classified as Class 1 surface spread
when tested in accordance with BS 476, Part 7. They shall not in any way attack the insulation or
the surface to which the insulation is being applied and shall be suitable for the working
temperatures.

2.3 INSULATION MATERIALS


A. Comply with requirements in Part 3 schedule articles for where insulating materials shall be
applied.
B. Products shall not contain asbestos, lead, mercury, or mercury compounds.
C. Products that come in contact with stainless steel shall have a leachable chloride content of less
than 50 ppm when tested according to ASTM C 871.
D. Insulation materials for use on austenitic stainless steel shall be qualified as acceptable according
to ASTM C 795.
E. Foam insulation materials shall not use CFC or HCFC blowing agents in the manufacturing
process. Insulation material should have Zero ODP & Zero GWP.
F. Material shall have active inbuilt anti microbial protection as per ASTM G21, ASTM G22/UL 181-
The antimicrobial ingredient shall not be on lists of banned products by any of the various
environmental and health agencies
G. Calcium Silicate:
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2. Preformed Pipe Sections: Flat-, curved-, and grooved-block sections of noncombustible,
inorganic, hydrous calcium silicate with a non-asbestos fibrous reinforcement. Comply with
ASTM C 533, Type I.
3. Flat-, curved-, and grooved-block sections of noncombustible, inorganic, hydrous calcium
silicate with a non-asbestos fibrous reinforcement. Comply with ASTM C 533, Type I.
4. Prefabricated Fitting Covers: Comply with ASTM C 450 and ASTM C 585 for dimensions
used in preforming insulation to cover valves, elbows, tees, and flanges.

H. Polyolefin: Cross linked (Physically or Chemically), closed cell Polyolefin foam with factory applied,
9um reinforced aluminum foil and factory applied acrylic adhesive backing..
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list:
1.1. Density: 25 Kg / m3 (foam core only); Contractor shall verify the thickness of the
insulation based on the heat transfer requirements for different sizes.
1.2. Insulating materials shall have thermal conductivity (ASTM C518) values not more
than 0.032 W/mK at mean temperature 23°C
1.3. Water absorption: <0.1 % v/v
1.4. Water Vapour permeability (ASTM E96: Better than 8.19 X 10-15 Kg/Pa.s.m,
(µ>20,000)
1.5. Fire Rating:
a. Class 0 to BS476 Part 6 & Part 7
b. Complies with ASTM E84 ( 25/50)
c. Complies to NFPA 90A and NFPA 90B ( Coverings)
1.6. Smoke Density and Toxicity
a. Meets ISO 5659 ( 1994) - Smoke Density and Toxicity Dm<200
b. FM Approved
I. Combustion gases CO, HCL, HF, NOx, HBr, HCN and SO2 to be within the maximum allowable
concentrations of the Standard related to smoke density and toxicity
J. Flexible Elastomeric: Closed-cell, sponge- or expanded-rubber materials. Comply with
ASTM C 534, Type I for tubular materials and Type II for sheet materials.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list:
1.1. Density: 40 to 60 Kg / m3 (foam core only); Contractor shall verify the thickness of the
insulation based on the condensation control requirements for different sizes.
1.2. Water absorption: <0.1 % v/v
1.3. Fire Rating:
a. Class O as per BS 476 Part & Part
b. Complies with ASTM E84 ( 25/50)
c. Complies to NFPA 90A and NFPA 90B ( Coverings)
d. UL & FM Approved
e. Zero ODP & Zero GWP
f. CFC, HCFC & HFC free
K. Mineral-Fiber Board Insulation: Mineral or glass fibers bonded with a thermosetting resin. Comply
with ASTM C 612, Type IA or Type IB. For duct and plenum applications, provide insulation with
factory-applied FSP jacket. Factory-applied jacket requirements are specified in "Factory-Applied
Jackets" Article.
Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.:
L. High-Temperature, Mineral-Fiber Board Insulation: Mineral or glass fibers bonded with a
thermosetting resin. Comply with ASTM C 612, Type III, without factory-applied jacket.
Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.

1. All phenolic foam shall be CFC and HCFC free.


2. Phenolic foam pipe and duct insulation shall have a thermal conductivity of not more than
0.018 W/mK at 10 °C mean temperature. (Fully aged values shall be in accordance with
BS3927).
3. Phenolic foam shall not be used on steam services or services operating above 100 °C.
4. Where there is risk of corrosion being initiated by the pipework insulation a standard
passivating bore coating shall be provided to reduce the risk. Any aluminium foil overlaps
shall not be tucked in between the butt joints of the insulation sections.
5. All phenolic pipe insulation shall be a nominal density of 35 kg/m³ for interior piping
and 50kg/m3 for external pipework.
6. The perpendicular compressive strength shall not be less than 150 kN/m² for pipe
insulation and 100 kN/m² for duct insulation.
7. All pipe insulation to be factory covered with reinforced aluminum foil/kraft paper
laminate, the whole providing a Class I rating to BS 476 Part 7.
8. Bends are to be insulated with pre-molded polyisocyanurate rigid closed cell foam meeting
the same fire ratings as above but with aluminum foil applied separately on site.
9. Tees, valves, strainers etc. are to be produced by the Contractor forming suitable
metal boxes and pouring in-situ polyisocyanurate chemical system supplied by the
pipe insulation manufacturer and in accordance with his instructions.
10. High density pipe supports, 80kg/m3, are to be produced from the same chemical
system and by the same manufacturer of the insulation
11. The manufacturer’s installation recommendations shall be strictly adhered to.
12. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.
13. Preformed pipe insulation of rigid, expanded, closed-cell structure. Comply with
ASTM C 1126, Type III, Grade 1.
14. Block insulation of rigid, expanded, closed-cell structure. Comply with ASTM C 1126,
Type II, Grade 1.
15. Factories fabricate shapes according to ASTM C 450 and ASTM C 585.
16. Factory-Applied Jacket: Requirements are specified in "Factory-Applied Jackets" Article.

2.4 FIRE-RATED INSULATION SYSTEMS


A. Fire-Rated Board: Structural-grade, press-molded, xonolite calcium silicate, fireproofing board
suitable for operating temperatures up to 927 deg C. Comply with ASTM C 656, Type II, Grade 6
tested and certified to provide a 2-hour fire rating by a NRTL acceptable to authority having
jurisdiction.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list:
B. Fire-Rated Blanket: High-temperature, flexible, blanket insulation with FSK jacket that is tested
and certified to provide a 2-hour fire rating by a NRTL acceptable to authority having jurisdiction.

2.5 ADHESIVES

A. Materials shall be compatible with insulation materials, jackets, and substrates and for bonding
insulation to itself and to surfaces to be insulated, unless otherwise indicated.

B. Calcium Silicate Adhesive: Fibrous, sodium-silicate-based adhesive with a service temperature


range of 10 to 427 deg C.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list:
2. For indoor applications, use adhesive that has a VOC content of 80 g/L or less when
calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24).
C. Phenolic, Adhesive: Solvent-based resin adhesive, with a service temperature.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2. For indoor applications, use adhesive that has a VOC content of 50 g/L or less when
calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24).
D. Flexible Elastomeric Adhesive: Comply with MIL-A-24179A, Type II, Class I.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list..
2. For indoor applications, use adhesive that has a VOC content of 50 g/L or less when
calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24).
E. Polyolefin Adhesive: Comply with MIL-A-3316C, Class 2, Grade A.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2. Adhesive shall be a flexible, fire resistive compound suitable for vapour sealing insulated ducts
and pipes
3. Adhesive shall be factory applied acrylic adhesive supplied with insulation
4. Adhesive shall be suitable for indoor and outdoor use and in high humidity environments
5. Water vapor presence shall not exceed 0.05 perms at 0.030 inch dry film thickness when
tested in compliance with ASTMF 1249
6. When tested for surface burning characteristics in compliance with ASTM E84, flame spread
shall be 10 and smoke developed 15
7. Adhesive shall be UL classified and shall meet or exceed the requirements of NFPA 90A
and 90 B 25/50 .

2.6 MASTICS
A. Materials shall be compatible with insulation materials, jackets, and substrates; comply with MIL-C-
19565C, Type II.

2.8 SEALANTS

A. Joint Sealants:
1. Joint Sealants for Polyolefin, Flexible elastomeric, Phenolic, products: Subject to
compliance with requirements, provide as per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2. Materials shall be compatible with insulation materials, jackets, and substrates.
3. Permanently flexible, elastomeric sealant.
4. Service Temperature Range: Minus 73 deg C to plus 149 deg C.
5. Color: White or gray
6. For indoor applications, use sealants that have a VOC content of 250 g/L or less when
calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24).

2.9 FACTORY-APPLIED JACKETS


A. Insulation system schedules indicate factory-applied jackets on various applications. When factory-
applied jackets are indicated, comply with the following:
1. FSP Jacket: Aluminum-foil, fiberglass-reinforced scrim with polyethylene backing; complying
with ASTM C 1136, Type II.

2.10 FIELD-APPLIED FABRIC-REINFORCING MESH


A. Woven Glass-Fiber Fabric for Pipe Insulation: Approximately 68 g/sq. m with a thread count of 4
strands by 4 strands/sq. mm for covering pipe and pipe fittings.

2.11 FIELD-APPLIED CLOTHS

0.8 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 408 and suitable for the designed insulation
thickness. The surface covering shall be made from a multi-layer composite film of metallic
appearance with Aluminum intermediate layer and UV protection. The material shall be
Class 1 as per BS 476 Part 7 and Class O as per BS 476 Part 6.
4. Factory cut and rolled to size.
5. Finish and thickness are indicated in field-applied jacket schedules.
6. Moisture Barrier: (0.025mm thick for internal application, 0.075-mm- thick extrenal
application), heat-bonded polyethylene and kraft paper:
a. Same material, finish, and thickness as jacket.
b. Preformed 2-piece or gore, 45- and 90-degree, short- and long-radius elbows.
c. Tee covers.
d. Flange and union covers.
e. End caps.
f. Beveled collars.
g. Valve covers.
h. Field fabricate fitting covers only if factory-fabricated fitting covers are not available.
i. The values for water vapor permeance of barriers shall be as per BS 5422:2001.

2.13 TAPES
A. ASJ Tape: White vapor-retarder tape matching factory-applied jacket with acrylic adhesive,
complying with ASTM C 1136.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates and conditions for compliance with requirements for installation and other
conditions affecting performance of insulation application.
1. Verify that systems and equipment to be insulated have been tested and are free of defects.
2. Verify that surfaces to be insulated are clean and dry.
3. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 INSULATION THICKNESS

A. The insulation thickness should be in accordance with the requirements of BS 5422 and
calculated according to BS EN 10241 .The contractor shall provide the calculated thickness of the
insulation based on the heat transfer requirements for different sizes.
B. If the thickness given in, or interpolated from, the tables in the British Standard or the specification
do not correspond with available thickness, the nearest higher available thickness shall be used.
C. In multi-layer applications, where material thickness is rounded up to suit available
commercial
thickness, the installer shall ensure by calculation (in accordance with the appropriate British
Standard)
that each interface temperature is below the maximum continuous operating temperature of
the materials involved.

3.3 PREPARATION
A. Surface Preparation: Clean, dry and prepare surfaces to receive insulation. Remove materials that
will adversely affect insulation application. Before insulating, apply a corrosion coating to insulated
surfaces as follows:
1. Stainless Steel: Coat 300 series stainless steel with an epoxy primer 0.127 mm thick and
an epoxy finish 0.127 mm thick if operating in a temperature range between 60 deg C and
149 deg C. Consult coating manufacturer for appropriate coating materials and application
methods for operating temperature range.
2. Carbon Steel: Coat carbon steel operating at a service temperature between 0 deg C and
149 deg C with an zinc rich primer. Consult coating manufacturer for appropriate coating
materials and application methods for operating temperature range.
B. Coordinate insulation installation with the trade installing heat tracing. Comply with requirements
for heat tracing that applies to insulation.
C. Mix insulating cements with clean potable water; if insulating cements are to be in contact with
stainless-steel surfaces, use demineralized water.

3.4 GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS


A. Install insulation materials, accessories, and finishes with smooth, straight, and even surfaces; free
of voids throughout the length of equipment, ducts and fittings, and piping including fittings, valves,
and specialties.
In order to ensure that the insulation applied is in all respects in accordance with the
Specification, sections shall, as required by the Consultant, be cut from the finished insulation.

The Contractor is to allow his price for the removal and replacement of two sections of each type of
insulation. Defective sections shall be replaced at no cost to the Contract. If further defects
are revealed then the Consultant shall have the right, when in his opinion it is necessary, to issue
instructions for any part or the whole of the insulation to be removed and replaced. The
replacement with new insulation shall be to the satisfaction of the Consultant and the cutting out
and replacement shall be at no cost to the Contract.
B. Particular attention shall be paid to the finished appearances of all thermal insulation which must
present a neat and symmetrical appearance running true in the line with pipe layouts, etc. Any
rough, irregular and badly finished surfaces shall be stripped down and re-insulated to the
Consultant’s satisfaction.
C. Install insulation materials, forms, vapor barriers or retarders, jackets, and thicknesses required for
each item of equipment, duct system, and pipe system as specified.
D. Install accessories compatible with insulation materials and suitable for the service. Install
accessories that do not corrode, soften, or otherwise attack insulation or jacket in either wet or dry
state.
E. Install insulation with longitudinal seams at top and bottom of horizontal runs.
F. Install multiple layers of insulation with longitudinal and end seams staggered.
G. Do not weld brackets, clips, or other attachment devices to piping, fittings, and specialties.
H. Keep insulation materials dry during application and finishing.
I. Install insulation with tight longitudinal seams and end joints. Bond seams and joints with adhesive
recommended by insulation material manufacturer.
J. All metal surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned and treated with approved corrosion inhibitor
before applying the insulation. Insulation can be applied directly to galvanized surfaces.
K. Install insulation with least number of joints practical.
L. Lead bearing inserts shall be provided at all supports to ensure that the insulation is not
compressed or damaged. The inserts shall be treated hardwood or approved plastic.
M. Mechanical fasteners shall be used when installing slab or roll insulation. The fasteners shall be
the self-adhesive type and only fixed after cleaning to ensure proper adhesion.
N. Where vapor barrier is being installed, seal joints, seams, and penetrations in insulation at
hangers, supports, anchors, and other projections with vapor-barrier mastic.
1. Install insulation continuously through hangers and around anchor attachments.
2. For insulation application where vapor barriers are installed, extend insulation on anchor
legs from point of attachment to supported item to point of attachment to structure. Taper
and seal ends at attachment to structure with vapor-barrier mastic.
3. Install insert materials and install insulation to tightly join the insert. Seal insulation to
insulation inserts with adhesive or sealing compound recommended by insulation material
manufacturer.
4. Cover inserts with jacket material matching adjacent pipe insulation. Install shields over
jacket, arranged to protect jacket from tear or puncture by hanger, support, and shield.
O. Apply adhesives, mastics, and sealants at manufacturer's recommended coverage rate and wet
and dry film thicknesses.
P. Install insulation with factory-applied jackets as follows:

1. Draw jacket tight and smooth.


2. Cover circumferential joints with 75-mm- wide strips, of same material as insulation jacket.
Secure strips with adhesive and outward clinching staples along both edges of strip,
spaced 100 mm .
3. Overlap jacket longitudinal seams at least 38 mm. Install insulation with longitudinal seams
at bottom of pipe. Clean and dry surface to receive self-sealing lap. Staple laps with
outward clinching staples along edge at 50 mm.
4. For below ambient services, apply vapor-barrier mastic over staples.
5. Cover joints and seams with tape as recommended by insulation material manufacturer to
maintain vapor seal.
6. Where vapor barriers are installed, apply vapor-barrier mastic on seams and joints and at
ends adjacent to duct and pipe flanges and fittings.
Q. Cut insulation in a manner to avoid compressing insulation more than 75 percent of its nominal
thickness.
R. Finish installation with systems at operating conditions. Repair joint separations and cracking due
to thermal movement.
S. Repair damaged insulation facings by applying same facing material over damaged areas. Extend
patches at least 100 mm beyond damaged areas. Adhere, staple, and seal patches similar to butt
joints.
T. For above ambient services, do not install insulation to the following:
1. Vibration-control devices.
2. Testing agency labels and stamps.
3. Nameplates and data plates.
4. Manholes.
5. Handholes.
6. Cleanouts.

3.5 PENETRATIONS
A. Insulation Installation at Roof Penetrations: Install insulation continuously through roof
penetrations.
1. Seal penetrations with flashing sealant.
2. For applications requiring only indoor insulation, terminate insulation above roof surface and
seal with joint sealant. For applications requiring indoor and outdoor insulation, install
insulation for outdoor applications tightly joined to indoor insulation ends. Seal joint with
joint sealant.
3. Extend jacket of outdoor insulation outside roof flashing at least 50 mm below top of roof
flashing.
4. Seal jacket to roof flashing with flashing sealant.
B. Insulation Installation at Underground Exterior Wall Penetrations: Terminate insulation flush with
sleeve seal. Seal terminations with flashing sealant.
C. Insulation Installation at Aboveground Exterior Wall Penetrations: Install insulation continuously
through wall penetrations.

1. Seal penetrations with flashing sealant.


2. For applications requiring only indoor insulation, terminate insulation inside wall surface and
seal with joint sealant. For applications requiring indoor and outdoor insulation, install
insulation for outdoor applications tightly joined to indoor insulation ends. Seal joint with
joint sealant.
3. Extend jacket of outdoor insulation outside wall flashing and overlap wall flashing at least 50
mm.
4. Seal jacket to wall flashing with flashing sealant.
D. Insulation Installation at Interior Wall and Partition Penetrations (That Are Not Fire Rated): Install
insulation continuously through walls and partitions.
E. Insulation Installation at Fire-Rated Wall and Partition Penetrations: Install insulation continuously
through penetrations of fire-rated walls and partitions. Terminate insulation at fire damper sleeves
for fire-rated wall and partition penetrations. Externally insulate damper sleeves to match adjacent
insulation and overlap duct insulation at least 50 mm.
F. Comply with requirements in Division 07 Section "Penetration Firestopping" and fire-resistive joint
sealers.
G. Insulation Installation at Floor Penetrations:
1. Duct: Install insulation continuously through floor penetrations that are not fire rated. For
penetrations through fire-rated assemblies, terminate insulation at fire damper sleeves and
externally insulate damper sleeve beyond floor to match adjacent duct insulation. Overlap
damper sleeve and duct insulation at least 50 mm.
2. Pipe: Install insulation continuously through floor penetrations.
3. Seal penetrations through fire-rated assemblies. Comply with requirements in Division 07
Section "Penetration Firestopping."

3.6 EQUIPMENT, TANK, AND VESSEL INSULATION INSTALLATION


A. Thermal Insulation Installation for Tanks and Vessels: Install insulation over entire surface of tanks
and vessels.
1. Apply 100 percent coverage of adhesive to surface with manufacturer's recommended
adhesive.
2. Seal longitudinal seams and end joints.
B. Insulation Installation on Pumps:
1. Fabricate metal boxes lined with insulation. Fit boxes around pumps and coincide box joints
with splits in pump casings. Fabricate joints with outward bolted flanges. Bolt flanges on
150-mm centers, starting at corners. Install 10-mm- diameter fasteners with wing nuts.
Alternatively, secure the box sections together using a latching mechanism.
2. Fabricate boxes from aluminum 1.0 mmFor below ambient services, install a vapor barrier
at seams, joints, and penetrations. Seal between flanges with replaceable gasket material
to form a vapor barrier.

3.7 GENERAL PIPE INSULATION INSTALLATION

A. Requirements in this article generally apply to all insulation materials except where more specific
requirements are specified in various pipe insulation material installation articles.

B. Insulated support blocks


1. At the points of support where insulation bears the weight of pipework and contents,
purpose designed load bearing, high density blocks of an approved material shall be
installed at all support positions to facilitate installation of a continuous thickness of
vapour sealed insulation and finish.
2. The pipe insulation shall be butted up to the block and the joints sealed with a suitable
adhesive tape to provide a continuous vapour seal through the support.
3. Sharp edges on metal support brackets/clips shall be ground smooth to ensure that the
brackets/clips do not perforate the foil facing, thus destroying the vapour seal.
4. Where pipework is supported on steel bearers/rollers, purpose designed high density
blocks of an approved material fitted with galvanised metal wearing plates shall be used.
The support blocks shall be butt jointed, wrapped with adhesive tape and vapour sealed..
C. Insulation Installation on Fittings, Valves, Strainers, Flanges, and Unions:
1. Install insulation over fittings, valves, strainers, flanges, unions, and other specialties with
continuous thermal and vapor-retarder integrity, unless otherwise indicated.
2. Insulate pipe elbows using preformed fitting insulation or mitered fittings made from same
material and density as adjacent pipe insulation. Each piece shall be butted tightly against
adjoining piece and bonded with adhesive. Fill joints, seams, voids, and irregular surfaces
with insulating cement finished to a smooth, hard, and uniform contour that is uniform with
adjoining pipe insulation.
3. Insulate tee fittings with preformed fitting insulation or sectional pipe insulation of same
material and thickness as used for adjacent pipe. Cut sectional pipe insulation to fit. Butt
each section closely to the next and hold in place with tie wire. Bond pieces with adhesive.
4. Insulate valves using preformed fitting insulation or sectional pipe insulation of same
material, density, and thickness as used for adjacent pipe. Overlap adjoining pipe
insulation by not less than two times the thickness of pipe insulation, or one pipe diameter,
whichever is thicker. For valves, insulate up to and including the bonnets, valve stuffing-
box studs, bolts, and nuts. Fill joints, seams, and irregular surfaces with insulating cement.
5. Insulate strainers using preformed fitting insulation or sectional pipe insulation of same
material, density, and thickness as used for adjacent pipe. Overlap adjoining pipe
insulation by not less than two times the thickness of pipe insulation, or one pipe diameter,
whichever is thicker. Fill joints, seams, and irregular surfaces with insulating cement.
Insulate strainers so strainer basket flange or plug can be easily removed and replaced
without damaging the insulation and jacket. Provide a removable reusable insulation cover.
For below ambient services, provide a design that maintains vapor barrier.
6. Insulate flanges and unions using a section of oversized preformed pipe insulation. Overlap
adjoining pipe insulation by not less than two times the thickness of pipe insulation, or one
pipe diameter, whichever is thicker.
7. Cover segmented insulated surfaces with a layer of finishing cement and coat with a mastic.
Install vapor-barrier mastic for below ambient services and a breather mastic for above
ambient services. Reinforce the mastic with fabric-reinforcing mesh. Trowel the mastic to
a smooth and well-shaped contour.

8. For services not specified to receive a field-applied jacket except for flexible elastomeric and
polyolefin, install fitted PVC cover over elbows, tees, strainers, valves, flanges, and unions.
Terminate ends with PVC end caps. Tape PVC covers to adjoining insulation facing using
PVC tape.
9. Stencil or label the outside insulation jacket of each union with the word "UNION." Match
size and color of pipe labels.
D. Insulate instrument connections for thermometers, pressure gages, pressure temperature taps,
test connections, flow meters, sensors, switches, and transmitters on insulated pipes, vessels, and
equipment. Shape insulation at these connections by tapering it to and around the connection with
insulating cement and finish with finishing cement, mastic, and flashing sealant.
E. Install removable insulation covers at locations indicated. Installation shall conform to the
following:
1. Make removable flange and union insulation from sectional pipe insulation of same
thickness as that on adjoining pipe. Install same insulation jacket as adjoining pipe
insulation.
2. When flange and union covers are made from sectional pipe insulation, extend insulation
from flanges or union long at least two times the insulation thickness over adjacent pipe
insulation on each side of flange or union. Secure flange cover in place with stainless-steel
or aluminum bands. Select band material compatible with insulation and jacket.
3. Construct removable valve insulation covers in same manner as for flanges except divide
the two-part section on the vertical center line of valve body.
4. When covers are made from block insulation, make two halves, each consisting of mitered
blocks wired to stainless-steel fabric. Secure this wire frame, with its attached insulation, to
flanges with tie wire. Extend insulation at least 50 mm over adjacent pipe insulation on
each side of valve. Fill space between flange or union cover and pipe insulation with
insulating cement. Finish cover assembly with insulating cement applied in two coats.
After first coat is dry, apply and trowel second coat to a smooth finish.
5. Unless a PVC jacket is indicated in field-applied jacket schedules, finish exposed surfaces
with a metal jacket.

3.8 CALCIUM SILICATE INSULATION INSTALLATION


A. Insulation Installation on Boiler Breechings and Generator Exhausts:
1. Secure single-layer insulation with stainless-steel bands at 300-mm intervals and tighten
bands without deforming insulation material.
2. Install 2-layer insulation with joints tightly butted and staggered at least 75 mm. Secure
inner layer with wire spaced at 300-mm intervals. Secure outer layer with stainless-steel
bands at 300-mm intervals.
3. On exposed applications without metal jacket, finish insulation surface with a skim coat of
mineral-fiber, hydraulic-setting cement. When cement is dry, apply flood coat of lagging
adhesive and press on one layer of glass cloth. Overlap edges at least 25 mm. Apply
finish coat of lagging adhesive over glass cloth. Thin finish coat to achieve smooth, uniform
finish.
B. Insulation Installation on Straight Pipes and Tubes:

1. Secure single-layer insulation with stainless-steel bands at 300-mm intervals and tighten

2. Install 2-layer insulation with joints tightly butted and staggered at least 75 mm. Secure
inner layer with wire spaced at 300-mm intervals. Secure outer layer with stainless-steel
bands at 300-mm intervals.
3. Apply a skim coat of mineral-fiber, hydraulic-setting cement to insulation surface. When
cement is dry, apply flood coat of lagging adhesive and press on one layer of glass cloth or
tape. Overlap edges at least 25 mm. Apply finish coat of lagging adhesive over glass cloth
or tape. Thin finish coat to achieve smooth, uniform finish.
C. Insulation Installation on Pipe Flanges:
1. Install preformed pipe insulation to outer diameter of pipe flange.
2. Make width of insulation section same as overall width of flange and bolts, plus twice the
thickness of pipe insulation.
3. Fill voids between inner circumference of flange insulation and outer circumference of
adjacent straight pipe segments with cut sections of block insulation of same material and
thickness as pipe insulation.
4. Finish flange insulation same as pipe insulation.

3.11 PHENOLIC INSULATION INSTALLATION


A. General Installation Requirements:
1. Secure single-layer insulation with stainless-steel bands at 300-mm intervals and tighten
bands without deforming insulation materials.
2. Install 2-layer insulation with joints tightly butted and staggered at least 75 mm. Secure
inner layer with 1.6-mm wire spaced at 300-mm intervals. Secure outer layer with
stainless-steel bands at 300-mm intervals.
B. Insulation Installation on Straight Pipes and Tubes:
1. Secure each layer of insulation to pipe with wire or bands and tighten bands without
deforming insulation materials.
2. Where vapor barriers are indicated, seal longitudinal seams, end joints, and protrusions with
vapor-barrier mastic and joint sealant.
3. For insulation with factory-applied jackets on above ambient services, secure laps with
outward clinched staples at 150 mm o.c.
4. For insulation with factory-applied jackets with vapor retarders on below ambient services,
do not staple longitudinal tabs but secure tabs with additional adhesive as recommended
by insulation material manufacturer and seal with vapor-barrier mastic and flashing sealant.
C. Insulation Installation on Pipe Flanges:
1. Install preformed pipe insulation to outer diameter of pipe flange.
2. Make width of insulation section same as overall width of flange and bolts, plus twice the
thickness of pipe insulation.
3. Fill voids between inner circumference of flange insulation and outer circumference of
adjacent straight pipe segments with cut sections of block insulation of same material and
thickness as pipe insulation.
D. Insulation Installation on Pipe Fittings and Elbows:
1. Install preformed insulation sections of same material as straight segments of pipe
insulation. Secure according to manufacturer's written instructions.
E. Insulation Installation on Valves and Pipe Specialties:
1. Install preformed insulation sections of same material as straight segments of pipe
insulation. Secure according to manufacturer's written instructions.
2. Arrange insulation to permit access to packing and to allow valve operation without
disturbing insulation.
3. Install insulation to flanges as specified for flange insulation application.

3.12 FIELD-APPLIED JACKET INSTALLATION


A. Where glass-cloth jackets are installed, install directly over bare insulation or insulation with
factory-applied jackets.
1. Draw jacket smooth and tight to surface with 50-mm overlap at seams and joints.
2. Embed glass cloth between two 1.6-mm- thick coats of lagging adhesive.
3. Completely encapsulate insulation with coating, leaving no exposed insulation.
B. Where FSK jackets are installed, install as follows:

3. Secure jacket to insulation with manufacturer's recommended adhesive.
4. Install jacket with 38-mm laps at longitudinal seams and 75-mm- wide joint strips at end
joints.
5. Seal openings, punctures, and breaks in vapor-retarder jackets and exposed insulation with
vapor-barrier mastic.
C. Where metal jackets are installed, install with 50-mm overlap at longitudinal seams and end joints.
Overlap longitudinal seams arranged to shed water. Seal end joints with weatherproof sealant
recommended by insulation manufacturer. Secure jacket with stainless-steel bands 300 mm o.c.
and at end joints.
1. Metal jackets shall be formed to fit tightly over the outer circumference of the
insulation with longitudinal overlaps of not less than 50 mm the outer part of the overlap to
be secured with self-tapping screws or rivets of the appropriate type at centres of not more
than 150mm. All longitudinal joints shall be hidden from view as far as possible.
2. Circumferential overlaps to be not less than 50 mm and secured with secured with self-
tapping screws or rivets of the appropriate type, not less than four, equally spaced. One
circumferential joint should be left free at maximum intervals of 5 meters to allow for
expansion and contraction.
3. All joints shall be so arranged as to shed liquids and shall be sealed with a suitable gun
applied water resistant sealant.
4. All bends and fittings shall be covered with matching metal sheet cladding tailored
to fit the application but using specially segmented purpose made pieces, or mitered bends
where applicable.
5. All insulation termination points shall be trimmed with compatible metal coiled end capping
pieces secured over the aluminium cladding with closed head pop rivets.
All metal work shall be pre-formed, neatly and correctly installed, and manufactured
to ensure a smooth, clean, uniform installation free from sharp and dangerous edges.

3.13 FIRE-RATED INSULATION SYSTEM INSTALLATION


A. Where fire-rated insulation system is installed, secure system to ducts and duct hangers and
supports to maintain a continuous fire rating.
B. Insulate duct access panels and doors to achieve same fire rating as duct.
C. Install firestopping at penetrations through fire-rated assemblies. Fire-stop systems are specified
in Division 07 Section "Penetration Firestopping."

3.14 FINISHES

A. Duct, Equipment, and Pipe Insulation with ASJ, Glass-Cloth, or Other Paintable Jacket Material:
Paint jacket with paint system identified below and as specified in Division 09 painting Sections.
1. Flat Acrylic Finish: Two finish coats over a primer that is compatible with jacket material
and finish coat paint. Add fungicidal agent to render fabric mildew proof.
2. Finish Coat Material: Interior, flat, latex-emulsion size.

B. Thermal Insulation: After adhesive has fully cured, apply two coats of insulation manufacturer's
recommended protective coating.
C. Color: Final color as selected by Consultant. Vary first and second coats to allow visual inspection
of the completed Work.
D. Do not field paint aluminum or stainless-steel jackets.

3.15 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL


A. Testing Agency: Engage a qualified testing agency to perform tests and inspections.
B. Perform tests and inspections.

D. Inspect ductwork, randomly selected by Consultant, by removing field-applied jacket and insulation
in layers in reverse order of their installation. Extent of inspection shall be limited to one location(s)
for each duct system defined in the "Duct Insulation Schedule, General" Article.
E. Inspect field-insulated equipment, randomly selected by Consultant, by removing field-applied
jacket and insulation in layers in reverse order of their installation. Extent of inspection shall be
limited to one number location(s) for each type of equipment defined in the "Equipment Insulation
Schedule" Article. For large equipment, remove only a portion adequate to determine compliance.
F. Inspect pipe, fittings, strainers, and valves, randomly selected by Consultant, by removing field-
applied jacket and insulation in layers in reverse order of their installation. Extent of inspection
shall be limited to three locations of straight pipe, three locations of threaded fittings, locations of
welded fittings, two locations of threaded strainers, two locations of welded strainers, three
locations of threaded valves, and three locations of flanged valves for each pipe service defined in
the "Piping Insulation Schedule, General" Article.
G. All insulation applications will be considered defective Work if sample inspection reveals
noncompliance with requirements.
