UNIT 7: The World of Work

LESSON TITLE: ‘The modern servant’ - the nanny, the cook and the gardener

TIME: 50 minutes

LESSON AIMS:

-to provide oral practice and to encourage conversation based on an assigned topic;

-to encourage the students to look for information and bring their own arguments to support
their answers;

-to stimulate conversation, to create interest in the topic and to initiate discussion;

-to give the students a chance to practice their speaking and reading skills;

-to enrich vocabulary.

OPERATIONAL AIMS:

- students will be able to talk about the differences in job responsibilities;

- to give practice in reading techniques;

- to give practice in making suggestions and agreeing and disagreeing in spoken English;

- to illustrate given situations using role plays.

SKILLS: reading, speaking and writing


METHODS AND PROCEDURE: conversation, group work
TYPES OF INTERACTION: T – Ss; S – S (pair work, group work);

MATERIALS

-blackboard; - textbooks;

-notebooks; - worksheets.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:

- Some students may not understand the entire text while reading and they may need further
explanations or translations;
- Some students may be reluctant to speak and express their own points of view.

2. Pre-reading task T asks Ss to imagine that they are rich in the world 10’

Then T elicits Ss to talk about what they have
imagined (where they live, do they have servants,
what do they do to relax, what were the Ss →T
responsibilities of the servants of those times, what
they know about the servants’ lives)
T asks Ss to compare what they have imagined and
talked about to the present situations of jobs that
were done by the servants one hundred years ago.
3. Reading T divides the class into 3 groups. 10’
Group A read about the nanny. T→Ss
Group B read about the cook.
Group C read about the gardener.
Each group has to answer the questions given at
ex.1, pag.70. in written form and then each group Ss ↔Ss
assigns a member to present what they have learned
from the text given to them. The Ss from the other
two groups take notes the ideas that their colleagues
present to them.
As a result Ss, with the guidance of their T, go
through questions a-e in ex1, p.70 and gather
information regarding the jobs they have read about. Ss ↔Ss
They compare and swap information about the
people.
4. Post-reading Ss decide whether the statements from ex.2, p.72 10’
are true or false. Through this exercise T checks the Ss ↔Ss
comprehension of the text.

Ss from groups A and B are asked then to imagine


that they are parents of Ss from group C. Ss from Ss ↔Ss
group A are lawyers and Ss from group B are
doctors and each group would like the Ss from
group C to choose one of these respected careers.

Ss from group C pretend that they do not want the Ss ↔Ss


professions that their parents wish for them but they
want to become dancers, musicians, poets,
explorers, models, jockeys, or even astronauts.

Productive stage T assigns groups made of three members (A, B, C).
Ss talk together and try to persuade each other of Ss ↔Ss
their own points of view.
7. Homework The teacher appreciates the students' performance 5’
and assessment and asks them to write as homework the following: T→Ss

According to the group they belonged to Ss write a


letter to their parents/ children trying to convince
their children/ parents that the profession that you
spoke about is still the best choice.

8. Extra activity ( in Ss do ex.2, p.70 in the groups A, B and C as they Ss ↔Ss
