Two Explanations/Analyzations of the Dr.

Seuss Appeasement Political Cartoon

Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) worked as a political cartoonist in the opening years of the Second World War before joining the
service. The cartoon is speaking to the matter of the appeasement movement prevalent in the United States prior to the
attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941.

This particular cartoon was published August 13, 1941, in the left wing New York City newspaper PM. The line at the top
“Remember…One More Lollypop, and Then You All Go Home!” should be read as the dialog spoken by the man in the
center of the drawing labeled “The Appeaser.”

Geisel is suggesting the folly of attempting to appease the monsters of the Nazis by offering them lollipops in hopes that
they will not eat him. The dialog would suggest that this is not the first such offer “The Appeaser” has made.

The years leading up to the onset of the Second World War were filled with unsuccessful attempts to appease Hitler and
other fascist dictators in Europe and Japan, the Rhineland, the Sudetenland, the annexation of Austria, the occupation of
Czechoslovakia, and the invasion of Manchuria and China. These are but a few of the examples of where appeasement
lead.

This cartoon depicts a small man labeled "The Appeaser" holding lollipops out. Surrounding him are ferocious, hungry
monsters. This cartoon represents Dr. Seuss's view of the Policy of Appeasement. The Policy of Appeasement was meant
to prevent Hitler from invading more countries in Europe. However, the Policy of Appeasement inevitably lead to Hitler's
invasion of Poland that started World War II. In the cartoon, “The Appeaser” represents Britain and the monsters clearly
represent Germany. The Appeaser even has a little smile on his face as if he is unaware of the troubles ahead of
him. The lollipops might represent the countries in Europe. Britain is giving Germany more countries to appease them, but
each country gives Germany more power. The caption states," Remember...One More Lollypop, and Then You All Go
Home!" It is clear that these hungry monsters will not go home after eating the lollipop. They will stay and demand more
lollipops.  This cartoon is ironic because The Appeaser believes the monsters will go home, but we all know they will stay
and pester him for more lollipops!
