Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array
Release Notes

This document contains information about outstanding issues or requirements that

affect installation and operation of the Sun StorEdge™ 3510 FC array.

New Features in This Release

■ This release contains firmware patch ID # 113723-06
This patch contains all three types of firmware updates for the Sun StorEdge 3510
array controller subsystem: firmware for the array controller itself; firmware for
the SES processor; and firmware for a programmable logic device (PLD) that
routes Fibre Channel data within the enclosure.
You do not need to install this patch if you have all of the following firmware
revision levels:
■ Controller firmware: 3.27Q
■ SES firmware: 1030
■ PLD firmware: 1000
You do need to install this patch if you have any of the following:
■ Controller firmware 3.27P or earlier
■ SES firmware 1000 or A100
■ PLD firmware A000
See “Installing Controller Firmware Patches” on page 14 for more information.
■ This release adds software support for the Solaris™ 2.6 operating system. See
“Downloading and Installing Updated Management and Monitoring Software for
Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Arrays” on page 16 for more information.

1
If you are using this software on a host running the Solaris 2.6 operating system,
you must download and install version 1.3.1 of the Java Runtime Environment,
available at this website:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html
■ This release adds support for the Sun StorEdge 3510 FC array connected to the
following servers:
■ Sun Fire V60x server
■ Sun Fire V65x server
■ Sun Fire V250 server

Note – Connecting the Sun StorEdge 3510 RAID array to Fibre Channel HBAs on
the same channel that use different speeds (1 Gb & 2 Gb) is not supported. You can,
however, mix 1-Gb and 2-Gb FC HBAs on different channels. This limitation is due
to the design of the Sun StorEdge 3510 RAID array's port bypass circuitry and the
inability of Fibre Channel to support auto-negotiation in a multi-drop loop
configuration.

■ This release also adds support for the Sun StorEdge 3510 FC array connected to
the following servers, using the X6757A SBus host bus adapter and running
versions 2.6, 8, or 9 of the Solaris operating system:
■ Sun Enterprise™ 3500 Server
■ Sun Enterprise 4500 Server
■ Sun Enterprise 5500 Server
■ Sun Enterprise 6500 Server
■ Sun Enterprise 10000 Server
If you are running the Solaris 2.6 operating system on one of these servers, you
must download and use the QLogic Solaris SPARC™ driver package 4.13.01 or
later. If you are running the Solaris 8 operating system or Solaris 9 operating
system, use the appropriate Sun™ driver. Refer to the Product Notes for your
HBA for information about how to download and install the appropriate
packages and patches from this website:
http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/
Network_Storage_Solutions/Adapters/index.html
■ The Sun StorEdge 3510 FC array has passed Windows 2003 compatibility testing
at the Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Lab (WHQL). The array is now
listed in the Windows Server catalog as supported for Windows 2003 and
Windows 2000.

Installing Controller Firmware Patches

Firmware patch ID # 113723-06 is available to upgrade Sun StorEdge 3510 FC arrays
running firmware versions lower than 3.27Q, and to upgrade the firmware for the
controller’s SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) chip to version 1030 and Programmable
Logic Device (PLD) chips to version 1000.

This patch contains all three types of firmware updates for the Sun StorEdge 3510
array controller subsystem: firmware for the array controller itself; firmware for the
SES processor; and firmware for a programmable logic device (PLD) that routes
Fibre Channel data within the enclosure.

You do not need to install this patch if you have all of the following firmware
revision levels:
■ Controller firmware: 3.27Q
■ SES firmware: 1030
■ PLD firmware: 1000

You do need to install this patch if you have any of the following:
■ Controller firmware 3.27P or earlier
■ SES firmware 1000 or A100
■ PLD firmware A000

Follow the first three steps in “To Download and Install the Firmware Patch” on
page 15 to read specific information about fixed bugs and other changes
incorporated in this firmware patch, as well as other detailed information and
installation instructions.

Known Issues Affecting Sun StorEdge

3510 FC RAID Arrays
■ Bug 4702532: Write cache not automatically disabled when battery is offline.
Write cache is not automatically disabled when battery is offline due to battery
failure or a disconnected battery. The current design allows the user to enable or
disable the write-back cache capabilities of the RAID controller. The cache in the
Sun StorEdge 3510 RAID array is mirrored between the primary and secondary
controllers; however, to ensure data integrity, you may choose to disable the Write
Back cache option and switch to the Write Through cache option.
■ Bug 4764752: Host doesn’t see newly created luns without a LIP. Sometimes
hosts cannot detect newly created LUNs. Workarounds include running the
cfgadm(1M) or devfsadm(1M) commands or performing a reconfiguration
reboot (as shown in the following screen example) to enable the host to detect the
LUNs.

# reboot -- -r

■ Bug 4819218: Differences between firmware and sccli events. The firmware
application menu event log timestamp and the sccli event log timestamp will
appear as different times. This is because the firmware application menu gets its
time stamp information from the time that is set on the RAID controller, and the
sccli utility gets its time stamp information from the server that it is running on.
Additionally, the sccli utility currently reports events from the primary
controller only. The workaround is to manually set the clock on the controller to
match the server to which it is connected.
■ Bug 4714227: The character interface sometimes fails to respond correctly. While
running heavy I/O to several LUNs on different logical drives and scrolling
through a menu that is long, such as a long, multiple LUN mapping menu,

Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array Release Notes 21

occasionally the menu will “escape” back one or two menus. This problem only
occurs under heavy I/O and occasionally when accessing the unit using telnet
over long distances.
■ Bug 4825806: BBU warnings should not be as severe. The Sun StorEdge 3510 FC
array has a battery circuit board that monitors and charges the battery during
normal operation. Since the battery is not charging while the array is powered off,
some of the charge of the battery will dissipate. When the array is powered on,
the battery circuit board will detect the power dissipation of the battery and will
display the following message: “|[0125] WARNING: Controller BBU Not Fully
Charged” and begin to recharge the battery. Once the battery is fully charged, the
following message will be displayed: “|[01A5] NOTICE: Controller BBU Fully
Charged!”
■ Bug 4859115: long delays with StorEdge 3510 array (256 LUNs mapped). On a
Sun StorEdge 3510 FC array with 256 LUNs mapped attached to a system, the
Explorer diagnostic tool takes about six hours and forty minutes to complete.
Even though there aren't any T3 arrays attached to they system, there was a large
delay here. The workaround is to use the -w !t3,!t3extended option,
reducing the time it takes explorer to complete to approximately 40 minutes.
■ Bug 4858636: sccli controller reset causes shutdown of LDs. When using the
CLI's Reset Controller menu option. Logical drives are put into a shutdown state,
making data on them inaccessible. In the event that the reset fails, the controllers
must be manually reset through either the tip or telnet session.
■ Bug 4862492: Diagnostic Reporter daemon shows debug argument in process
table. Debug mode can lead to excessive log files and slow application response
times. Using the ps -el | grep sswdgrptd command shows the debug
argument in the process. This has no impact on the operation of the software.
■ Bug 4860383: out of band cli interface hangs during diag channel inquiry after 1
to 4 hours. When monitoring the array remotely using an out-of-band connection,
the out-of-band interface became unavailable after 1-4 hours. If the array is on-
line, you can issue a fail primary CLI command followed by an unfail
primary CLI command to restore the out-of-band session. If the array is not on-
line, you can issue a reset controller CLI command to restore the out-of-
band session.
■ Bug 4863169: out of band cli download of ses firmware fails and leaves LDs
shutdown. When downloading SES firmware using an out-of-band connection,
the download may fail. The workaround is to download the SES firmware using
an in-band connection.
■ Bug 4863110: sccli download of pld has problems. Performing a PLD firmware
upgrade incorrectly could result in the array controller FRU being rendered
unusable. Upgrading the PLD firmware causes the host's Fibre Channel HBAs to
be disconnected from the array temporarily, which could prevent sccli from
completing the procedure properly if sccli is not used out-of-band. The PLD
firmware upgrade cannot be completed without power-cycling the array at the
end of the procedure, so do not proceed if it is not possible to power cycle the

22 Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array Release Notes • December 2003

array. The workaround is to download the PLD firmware using an out-of-band
connection, power-cycle the array afterward, and run the show ses CLI
command to verify that the download completed successfully. Refer to the
Readme file associated with the PLD firmware patch for more information.
■ Bug 4858582: channel 0 offline after failure and recovery of primary controller.
If a host channel with multiple host channel IDs that are not all LUN-mapped is
under heavy load when a controller is failed and deasserted, I/O operations can
fail. The workaround is to remove any host channel IDs that are not LUN-
mapped.
■ Bug 4860688: sccli download firmware to single controller unit error. When
downloading controller firmware to a single controller, the “engage” command
will fail with an error message:
sccli: download firmware: error:
sm_err_ctrl_download_ok_but_no_engage_request
The workaround is to use the -r argument to the CLI download controller-
firmware command as documented in the patch Readme file associated with
the firmware.
■ Bug 4867584: missing LUNs on reboot (1024 LUNs, 512 per channel). In a direct-
connect configuration with 512 LUNs mapped to one channel and 512 different
LUNs mapped to another channel, LUNs in a single target ID are lost on some
reboots. You should reboot your system if this occurs. To avoid this problem, Sun
StorEdge 3510 FC storage arrays are currently limited to 256 LUNs per channel
(eight IDs) in a Sun Cluster configuration.
■ Bug 4867560: scsi 2 tc_mhiocstatus reboot failure. When two nodes are
connected to the same channel of a Sun StorEdge 3510 FC storage array, rebooting
one node can cause the other node to lose the SCSI-2 reservation. This
configuration is not supported in this release. The workaround is to connect only
one node per channel on the Sun StorEdge 3510 FC storage arrays.
■ Bug 4864931: sccli> password incorrect is displayed when reset controller via
out-of-band. If the system password is set and then the controller is reset using
the CLI reset controller command over an out-of-band connection, you are
prompted for the password but the password is not accepted. The workaround is
to specify the password on the CLI command line with the -w or --password
option, or using the CLI password subcommand prior to invoking other CLI
commands.
■ Bug 4866418: sccli inquiry returns stale data following controller firmware
upgrade. The CLI show inquiry command returned stale data following a
firmware upgrade. The workaround is to stop and restart the CLI session so that
the correct data is returned.
■ Bug 4822129: inconsistent error message between reporting methods and
documentation. Event messages sometimes differ between firmware logs, Sun
StorEdge Configuration Service, CLI, and SNMP traps. These inconsistencies will
be addressed in a future release.

Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array Release Notes 23

■ Bug 4868656: sccli shows redundancy mode as unknown instead of Active-
Active. The Redundancy mode reports Unknown instead of Active-Active using
'sccli> show redundancy-mode' option. The “show redundancy” command
retrieves a status byte from the controller that describes the redundancy mode of
the array pair, and interprets it to display a descriptive phrase such as “Active-
Active” or “Not Supported”. Since the code used by sccli was written, the
firmware has been enhanced to provide additional status codes to indicate, for
example, that a controller has been failed manually, but the code in sccli was not
modified to display the newer status codes. 5 additional descriptive strings will
be added to sccli to address this problem.
■ Bug 4875170: i18n Description text box does not support Asian characters. The
Save Configuration menu option prompts for a description, but you cannot type
Asian characters in the text area provided.
■ Bug 4873277: sccli 'show configuration' XML output reports incorrect cache.
When the cache optimization mode is set to Random, the 'show cache-policy' and
'show configuration' CLI commands report the correct cache optimization.
However, the XML output of the 'show configuration' command does not report
the correct optimization mode. The workaround is to not use the ‘-x’ command
argument with the ‘show configuration’ command.
■ Bug 4871543: sccli 1.2.6 no longer reports bootrecord version. sccli version 1.2.6
'show configuration' command does not report the bootrecord version. The
workaround is to use the ‘-x’ command argument with the ‘show configuration’
command.
■ Bug 4871570: sccli version 1.2.6 does not get disk drive serial number
information. sccli version 1.2.6 'show configuration' command does not get disk
drive serial number information. The workaround is to use the ‘-x’ command
argument with the ‘show configuration’ command.
■ Bug 4926681: FC3510 does not log into switch after switch fault. If you choose to
connect one or more of the host channels on the StorEdge 3510 RAID to a 1-Gb
switch in Loop mode, the speed on those channels must be set to 1 GHz. This will
ensure proper negotiation if communication is lost to the switch and then
restored. This is not required if you are operating in point-to-point mode. It is also
not required if you are connected to a 2-Gb switch.
■ Bug 4932155: I/O failure (giving up) due to command timeout on data failover
test. During path failover testing, it was discovered that when a path failed I/O
did not continue on the alternate path. This was found to occur only with a
configuration of 32 LUNs per controller, total 64, with a very heavy I/O load.
■ Bug 4926717: 3510 failed to login to FC switch during storage side cable fault.
During path failover testing, it was discovered that when a switch port was
cycled, disconnected to connected, I/O did not continue on the restored path.
This was found to occur only with a configuration of 32 LUNs per controller, total
64, with a very heavy IO load.

24 Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array Release Notes • December 2003

■ Bug 4921484: 3510 and 3310 did not shut down during extended overtemp
conditions. The unit must shut down if the temperature exceeds the given limit.
Currently the unit does not shut down. However, the unit is fully NEBS certified,
and will handle the required temperatures required by NEBS certification.
■ Bug 4908349: FRU physical location within 3510 is not available from the
SCCLI. The “sccli> show FRU” command current does not display the physical
location for the FRU with any consistency.
■ Bug 4896313: Cache data isn't flushed correctly in case of primary battery
failure. If the battery is unplugged or dead, write cache is not disabled. This
means that if power is lost, data in the cache could be lost.
■ Bug 4881785: Cluster panics with Logical Volume on Secondary Controller. In a
Sun cluster environment, when the logical volumes are assigned to the secondary
controller, the cluster will panic during node failover. The documentation has
been modified to warn against using logical volumes (a legacy feature) in a Sun
Cluster environment.
■ Bug 4943569: SES device keeps getting exposed to Windows running SSTM.
When an SE3510FC is connected to a Windows 2000 or 2003 server while running
Traffic Manager 3.1, a New device Present message is displayed after a reboot.
■ Bug 4888608: Solaris SES driver receives incorrect response from 3510 RAID in
attach. The issue concerns the SES emulation response with LUN masking. If the
3510 array is configured for LUN masking and LUN 0 is not mapped to a logical
drive, the array will return a zero length response to an SES configuration mode
page request. This causes the Sun driver not to attach the device.
■ Bug 4906783: Firmware is not integrated with the FRU-ID's. The RAID
Controller serial number is displayed in the error messages instead of the FRU-ID
serial number. This can be very confusing and of little use to the customer.
■ Bug 4911841: SE3510 - unable to send SNMP traps using 'agent.ini' file, as
documented. SNMP traps from the SE3510FC are unable to be sent using the
'agent.ini' file, as documented in the User's Manual. The workaround is to use
SSCS to send the SNMP traps.
■ Bug 4939041: Bad resid Error Messages seen on host attached to RAID 3510 FC.
This issue appears to occur intermittently when the driver scans for devices. This
can occur at boot or when an error occurs. During this scanning process a
warning message may be encountered due to a data underrun condition being
posted by the 3510 array. Currently, the data underrun condition is understood to
be reported by non I/O commands only and does not affect the integrity of the
system.
■ Bug 4887607: Doc is missing information on view and edit SCSI channels for
3510 FC. The Sun StorEdge 3000 Family RAID Firmware 3.27 User's Guide for the
Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array is missing information about the view and edit Scsi
channels menu. There is also information regarding the SCSI device that is not
required in this document since the SCSI version has it's own firmware guide. The
missing information relates to view and edit Scsi channels: view and edit Scsi

Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array Release Notes 25

channels, view chip inFormation, view channel host-id/Wwn, View device port
name list(wwpn), Data rate. This information will be available in the next revision
of the documentation set.
■ Bug 4880182: FCP response packet sometimes fills in non-zero values in
reserved fields. fcp_rsp->reserved_0, fcp_rsp->reserved_1, fcp_rsp-
>fcp_u.fcp_status.reserved_0, fcp_rsp->fcp_u.fcp_status.reserved_1 were not
zeroed. This could appear any time the SES returns a response with a check
condition status, or when a data overrun is detected and the SES returns a
Residual Count.
■ Bug 4916011: Parity check never completes on random LDs in certain
configurations. The primary controller may fail if the user schedules multiple
“Rebuild Parity Regeneration” in a row. This does not happen if only one Parity
Regeneration is done. The workaround is to keep the controller assignments equal
across the LDs.
■ Bug 4942959: Storade - device port status is not monitored by 3510 firmware or
sccli sw. The host should detect that a cable is removed. Adding this functionality
to the RAID Controller Firmware would require a very significant amount of
effort.
■ Bug 4928066: sccli allows disk from existing Logical Drive to be added into new
Logical Drive. The sccli utility does not perform all the expected checks when
creating a new logical drive on the 3510 FC array. Specifically, it allows you to
specify a disk drive for use in the new logical drive that was previously
configured (and is therefore already in use) in an existing logical drive. The array
effectively breaks the existing logical drive to create the new one without any
warning or error messages.
■ Bug 4960491: Mix of 1gig and 2gig HBA on same channel causes loss of device.
Connecting the Sun StorEdge 3510 RAID array to Fibre Channel HBAs on the
same channel that use different speeds (1 Gb & 2 Gb) is not supported. You can,
however, mix 1-Gb and 2-Gb FC HBAs on different channels. This limitation is
due to the design of the Sun StorEdge 3510 RAID array's port bypass circuitry and
the inability of Fibre Channel to support auto-negotiation in a multi-drop loop
configuration.
■ RFE 4949375: ability to map more than one partition to a LUN not documented.
The chapter on mapping partitions to LUNs in the firmware guide: 5. Viewing
and Editing Host LUNs Sun StorEdge 3000 Family RAID Firmware 3.27 User's
Guide 816-7934-12 doesn't let customers know that multiple partitions can be
assigned to the same LUN, nor does it cover when a customer might want to do
this. Since there has been some confusion regarding this, as well as one escalation
which was aided by this information, it should be described in the user docs.
■ RFE 4949382: Skip option should be covered in user documentation. Through
the serial port, customers currently have the option of skipping persistent group
reservations as the controller comes up (from either a reset or power-cycle). These
messages are displayed: “Scanning SCSI channels. Please wait a few moments!
Preparing to restore saved persistent reservations. Type 'skip' to skip:” If you

26 Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array Release Notes • December 2003

don't type “skip” within 30 seconds, these messages follow: “Scanning SCSI
channels. Please wait a few moments! Restoring saved persistent
reservations.” This functionality and the purpose behind it aren’t covered in any
user documentation.
■ Under heavy load, the SSCS console might become unresponsive. If the Sun
StorEdge Configuration Service (SSCS) console does not reconnect after the load
decreases, perform a rescan. This situation can also prevent event messages from
being emailed by SSCS Console and Diagnostic Reporter software, as well as
updating of the SSCS console. The workaround is to assign a primary host LUN
for SSCS to communicate with exclusively. No data or I/O should be used on this
path. In order for this workaround to be effective, you must map only the LUN
that SSCS will use and configure SSCS before mapping the data drives.
■ When configuring the Web Server for use with ESM the Configure Web Server
feature may fail. When configuring the Web Server for use with Enterprise
Storage Manager, the Configure Web Server feature under Custom Configuration
Options may fail. To configure the Web Server manually, log in as root on the
host on which the Sun StorEdge Configuration Service agent is running and issue
the command:

# /usr/sbin/sscfghtml.sh -i ipaddress -p password

where ipaddress is the host name or IP address of the array, and password is the
password assigned to the array. Allow 20-30 seconds for this command to
complete, and then verify that it worked by using any web browser to visit:
http://ipaddress/esm.html
The Web browser displays a message “This page launches the Sun StorEdge(tm)
Configuration Service Console applet” and, if the SUNWnsmat package is
installed, the SSCS GUI will be launched.
■ Incorrect FC expansion unit cabling shown in illustrations. Figure 4-12 of the
Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation, and Service Manual for the Sun
StorEdge 3510 FC Array, 816-7300-14, and Figure 7 of the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family
Best Practices Manual for the Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array, 816-7325-12, show
correct cabling from hosts to the RAID array and from the RAID array to the first
expansion unit. But the connections from the upper expansion to the lower
expansion unit should be changed so that the upper I/O modules are connected
to each other and the lower I/O modules are connected to each other. These
changes will appear in the next revision of these documents.

Known Issues Affecting Sun StorEdge
3510 FC JBOD Arrays
■ Bug 4876798: sccli commands don't work for standalone JBOD. Full support for
standalone JBOD arrays was not incorporated in sccli 1.2.6. See section B-5,
Appendix B, in the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation, and Service
Manual for a list of currently supported sccli commands. In particular, it is not
possible at the time of this release to download SES and PLD firmware to a
standalone JBOD. This functionality will be added in a future release. In the
meantime, the workaround is to connect the JBOD to a 3510 RAID array and
download SES and PLD FW through the RAID controller.
■ Bug 4877284: Unable to see standalone JBOD from SSCS and sccli when mpxio
is enabled. Unable to run the management tools with Sun SAN Foundation Suite
4.2 enabled. sccli shows 'no manageable devices found.' The workaround is to
disable mpxio in the /kernel/drv/scsi_vhci.conf file.
■ Bug 4877295: SSCS shows disk multi-pathed under each HBA instead of only 1
enclosure instance. With mpxio disabled and multiple paths to the standalone
JBOD array, Sun StorEdge Configuration Service displays two HBAs with a listing
for the drives under each. Since the RAID arrays show only one instance, no
matter how many paths, this is not consistent with established behavior. It should
show only 1 enclosure.
■ Bug 4880700: vhci panic for 3510 FC JBOD ses. Sun SAN Foundation Suite 4.2
drivers do not properly handle Sun StorEdge 3510 FC JBOD array SES device
failure situations and can result in a host panic. This bug is the reason that SAN
Foundation Suite 4.2 is not currently supported for Sun StorEdge 3510 FC JBOD
arrays.
■ Bug 4883836: sccli: no method for identifying disk drives. sccli currently cannot
identify disk drive status by flashing disk drive LEDs on the array. This is basic
functionality when working with other Sun StorEdge 3510 FC JBOD arrays via
luxadm or the photon's front panel module screens. The need for this
functionality increases when the JBOD array is in an MPxIO configuration with
no correlation between the device path and the array's box ID/slot placement.
■ Bug 4905928: Bad resid Error Messages seen on host attached to a 3510 FC JBOD
array. This issue appears to occur intermittently when the driver scans for
devices. This can occur at boot or when an error occurs. During this scanning
process a warning message may be encountered due to a data underrun condition
being posted by the 3510 JBOD array. Currently, the data underrun condition is
understood to be reported by non-I/O commands only and does not affect the
integrity of the system. This issue is still being investigated to determine root
cause.
