Impact on Student Learning - Teaching Overview

Overview

Students will identify and draw basic music theory symbols and notations, such as a quarter note,
quarter rest, half note, whole note, and beamed eighth notes. Before and after the students have
learned these symbols, they will fill out a pre and post assessment worksheet to assess what they
already know, and what will still need to be taught.

Rationale

This experience matters in order for the students to have an understanding and knowledge of basic
music theory notation and symbols.

I Can Statements (learning goals)

● I can identify and notate basic music symbols.

○ (1.1) The student will read and notate music, including identification of basic music
symbols.

Materials

● Pre/Post Assessment Worksheet

● Whiteboards & Markers
● Instrumentation
● Computer
● Youtube

Detailed Process: Day 1: (20 mins)

Time Steps:
Required:

5 mins 1. Students will take the Pre Assessment worksheet to identify where they are
at with their knowledge of music notation

10 mins 2. Students will be handed a whiteboard and marker.

a. I will draw a quarter note step by step and ask the students to follow
along.
b. We will continue to draw the quarter note together, then I will ask
them to draw it by themselves as I walk around and make sure they

have drawn it correctly

c. After all of the students have successfully drawn a quarter note, we
will get out instruments to play the value of a quarter note
d. We will follow the same process for the quarter rest, and play a
steady beat pausing every other beat to represent the quarter rest.
4 mins 3. After the students have successfully drawn and played a quarter note and
quarter rest, we will watch the first part of a video to help solidify the
information they just learned, pausing as needed for review.

Detailed Process: Day 2: (20 mins)

Time Steps:
Required:

13 mins 1. Students will be handed a whiteboard and marker.

a. I will draw a half note step by step and ask the students to follow
along.
b. We will continue to draw the half note together, then I will ask them to
draw it by themselves as I walk around and make sure they have
drawn it correctly
c. After all of the students have successfully drawn a half note, we will
get out instruments to play the value of a half note
d. We will follow the same process for the whole note, and switch
between playing for the length of the whole note and the half note.
e. After they have successfully learned the half and whole note, we will
then learn about beamed together eighth notes, following the same
process of learning and playing.
6 mins 2. After the students have successfully drawn and played a half note, whole
note, and eighth notes, we will watch the same video from the previous
class to help solidify the information they just learned, pausing for review.

symbols learned in previous classes

3 mins 2. We will then get out the instruments and review the value of each notation
4 mins 3. After the students have identified and played each of the notation symbols, I
will turn on a metronome and ask them to decode what note value I am
clapping
5 mins 4. We will watch the video one more time for solidification
