Standard Seven Rationale: Instructional Strategies

Standard seven states, “The teacher: practices a range of developmentally, culturally, and
linguistically appropriate instructional strategies to meet the needs of students’ diverse cognitive
levels and learning styles. Provides multiple opportunities for students to develop higher order
and metacognitive skills (e. g., problem solving, predicting, organizing, summarizing,
categorizing, evaluating, questioning, self-monitoring). Supports and expands learners’
communication skills, uses a variety of effective technology and resources to support learning,
develops learners’ abilities to find and use information to solve real world problems. Uses a
variety of questioning strategies to promote engagement and learning.” The artifact that I chose
to address this standard is my lesson adaptation presentation. This presentation is focused on one
lesson plan and adapting it to ELL students. This process is to help all students learn in
classroom instruction.
This artifact connects with standard seven by incorporating appropriate instructional
strategies to meet the needs of ELL students. Providing students with diverse learning styles and
developing skills to lead them to success. In the presentation, five adaptation ideas are included
from the following categories throughout the lessons: Listening & speaking, contextualization,
rigorous curriculum, writing, home language, background knowledge, funds of knowledge,
model vocabulary and syntax, scaffolding, and ongoing assessment. All of these categories were
mastered by adapting to each section of the lesson plan in a positive way. The presentation had to
include a total of five adaptations that would support ELL students from a previous lesson I have
taught. I completed all adaptations and included rationales for every slide to demonstrate my
learning.
The skills I have gained from this adaptation lesson are questioning and summarizing all
my future lesson plans. By doing this, it can help me grow as a teacher when helping students
learn with different home languages. When I teach this lesson plan again, I want to incorporate
various models to help each student grasp new material. For example, showing pictures, playing
videos, spelling and labeling words around the classroom. Not only will this help all students
learn a new topic but it will allow ELL students to connect their own background with each
lesson being taught.
