Learning Segment Overview

Subject: Global History Teacher: Mr. Edgar Alvarez


Grade level: 10 Unit: Unresolved Global Conflict

1. Rationale Statement 

The purpose of this learning segment is for students to learn proper sourcing techniques with the purpose of
creating a strong argumentative essay. Using the Great War as our topic of interest, students are expected to use
critical thought, analyze, and draw conclusions supported with evidence to prove their argument. 

2. Central Focus

The Central Focus of this learning segment is for students to grasp an understanding of the effects of Imperialism
and Nationalism on the world as a whole. Students will be expected to employ their skills in analysis and critical
thought to inquire further the effects of the events of this era to future ones. Additionally they will learn proper
sourcing techniques to support any arguments they find worthwhile.

3. Essential Questions

What events or factors lead to the start of the First World War ?
How was the war perceived over time?
How was the world affected by the war and the technological advancements it inspired?

4. Learning Standard 

10.5 UNRESOLVED GLOBAL CONFLICT (1914–1945): World War I and World War II led to
geopolitical changes, human and environmental devastation, and attempts to bring stability and peace.
(Standards: 2, 3, 4, 5; Themes: TCC, GEO, GOV, CIV, TECH, EXCH)
 
10.5c The devastation of the world wars and use of total war led people to explore ways to prevent
future world wars.
 
Students will examine international efforts to work together to build stability and peace,
including Wilson’s Fourteen Points, the Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, and the
United Nations.

5. Learning Segment Goals 


Students will:
 Understand the role of nationalism and imperialism in growing European tensions
 Explain the changes in warfare, considering the emergence of industrial technologies
 Identify The Treaty of Versailles and post war U.S. Involvement  

6. Unit Plan/Learning Segment Assessments

 Students will summarize the videos they watch


 Students will pick a specific technology discussed in class and summarize its lasting effects
 An analysis of war propaganda posters
  Students will identify the difference between a primary and secondary source
 Students will write an argumentative paragraph detailing what they think was just and unjust
from the treaty of Versailles and the Paris peace conference
