Annotated Bibliography: Should the food industry be held responsible?

“Adult Obesity Causes & Consequences.” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention, 4 Feb. 2020, www.cdc.gov/obesity/adult/causes.html

This Government document introduces many causes of obesity including behavioral and

economic issues. Many behavioral problems can be due to inactivity and the environment that

people live in. These causes do not always correlate with the consumption of fast food. The

CDC, also known as the Center For Disease Control, is a government organization that helps

promote the wellbeing of citizens and is our nations protection organization. The CDC lays out

all facts and tends to stay unbiased. This article was first published on February 4th of 2020,

making it a very recent article. This source is a very helpful and would help an essay due to the

many facts and examples it gives about the causes of obesity.

Centric, Medical. “Obesity, Causes, SIgns and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.” Youtube,
Youtube, 12 July 2019, www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQUJ1HV0PWc.

This video posted online lists the many signs and symptoms helpful to those struggling

with obesity. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index of thirty and above or being

overweight. Obesity is a chronic medical condition that can cause people to become infertile,

have cancer, and have cardiovascular disease. Being obese can lead to many psychological

problems such as depression and having a low self-esteem. The medical centric first posted this

online video on July 12 of 2019. The author tends to post videos to educate others on many

diseases in the world. This source seems to be unbiased because it lists all of the factors that goes

into being obese. Although this video is a wonderful unbiased source, I feel that it gives too

many examples and takes away from the main point, which is whether or not fast food is to

blame for the obesity epidemic.

“Criticism of Fast Food.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 1 Feb. 2020,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_fast_food.

This article states many points to why obesity is becoming an epidemic worldwide. It

states many statistics such as “Many children ages 4-19 eat fast food on a daily basis.” This

article also states how fast food is only a minuscule factor when it comes to obesity in America.

This article was published very recently on Feb. 1 of 2020. Wikipedia is a well-known website

that people can use to update their thoughts and opinions for others to see. Wikipedia articles can

be changed at any time from anybody, making it a non-reliable source. This source could

potentially benefit an essay because it states the correlation from fast food and obesity, but due to

it being from a non-reliable source I would not use it in my essay.

Haspel, Tamar. “Perspective | How Processed Food Makes Us Fat.” The Washington Post, WP
Company, 17 July 2019, www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/how-processed-food-makes-
us-fat/2019/07/17/2bf93a2c-a7ff-11e9-86dd-d7f0e60391e9_story.html.

This is a news article that talks about the sole cause of obesity, Processed foods.

Processed foods can be bought anywhere in America and are not just in fast food. This article

was published July 17th of 2019 and written by Tamar Haspel, a writer for the Washington Post

and a resident in Massachusetts where she farms oysters. The Washington Post is a news website

that seems to be biased toward democratic and republican issues. This article is recent and does

seem to provide clear evidence that fast food chains are the root cause of obesity, making it a

very reliable source for my essay.

Obesity.” SpringerLink, Springer, Singapore, 24 Feb. 2017,
link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-981-10-2911-0_1.

This Scholarly article is very short and sweet providing an example on how fast food

does not always cause obesity in children. It states that obesity could be caused by the ignorance

of cooking skills and the decline of outdoor activities. It was written by Tahereh Alavi Hojjat, a

professor of economics at a university, and Rata Hojjat, a vice president of a group copy

supervisor in New York. This article was posted February 24 of 2017 making it a pretty recent

article. Even though this article is a reliable source, I do not feel it would benefit an essay due to

it being too short of an article.

Pink, Carrie. “Health The New Wealth.” Black Enterprise, Black Enterprise, 8 Apr. 2016,
www.blackenterprise.com/health-the-new-wealth/.

This article talks about how wealth can be harming your health. This article sates that

eating out, smoking and stress could all be factors of weight gain and have a negative effect on

health. Written by Carrie pink, an author of Black Enterprises and published on April 8th of 2016.

Black Enterprises is a website that empowers women and health. They seem slightly biased due

to the fact that they post mostly about women. Although this source seems reliable, I do not think

It would be beneficial to my essay because it would take away from the main point.

The Kitchen Guy. “Is Fast Food To Blame For Obesity? (You Might Be Shocked).” The Kitchen
Guy, The Kitchen Guy, 25 July 2016, www.thekitchenguy.net/is-fast-food-to-blame-for-obesity/.

This Scholarly article was written to educate people about fast food and its correlation to

obesity. It talks about eating in moderation and actively having a healthy lifestyle by working

out. It states that even though fast food has more calories than other foods, people can easily

workout in order to burn the calories that they consumed. This article was written by The

Kitchen Guy, which was initially created by a husband a wife who love everything about food.

This article was published July of 2016 making it a more recent article. This article seems totally

unbiased as it is telling facts and statistics about the obesity epidemic. I think that this article is a

reliable source and should be used to benefit and essay due to the many examples it gives.

York, CBS New. “Study: Test Can Discover Obesity Gene.” Youtube, Youtube, 18 Apr. 2019,
www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5sXbYPdq6w.

This video is about a group of scientists discovering that obesity is related to a certain

gene. And that fast food is not to blame, genetics are. It was uploaded from Cbs News, A reliable

news website that tells facts and stories about everyday issues and was published by Youtube in

April of 2019. Youtube is a place where many people can express themselves through video and

audio clips. This video seems unbiased and reliable making it useful to use in an essay.
