This chapter gives an overview of Symantec System Recovery Features and information on the
platforms on which this product can be used.
The Symantec System Recovery features include:
1. Backing up a workstation or server to a backup server across a corporate or secondary
network connection is supported. However, the control network cannot be used as a
backbone for backups; a secondary or corporate network must be used.
2. Backing up a workstation or server to an Invensys qualified portable USB hard drive
utilizing USB 2.0 or greater port speeds is supported. Using the older 1.0/1.1 USB
ports for backups has been tested, and although it correctly performs the
backup/restore function, the time to execute the backup is exceedingly long.
3. With this product, you can perform a backup on a machine and restore the backed up
data to the same machine at a later date for complete image or file recovery.
4. You can perform a complete restoration of a machine with an MEP replacement hard
drive that is the same size or larger than the failed drive.
5. Backup and restoration capability of virtual server hosts and virtual machines.
The following platforms are supported for Symantec System Recovery:
♦ Dell PowerEdge® T610 and PowerEdge R710 servers are supported for both
secondary network and USB 2.0 hard drive backups.

network and USB 2.0 hard drive backups.
♦ HP® Z400 workstations are supported for both secondary network and USB 2.0
hard drive backups.
♦ HP® Z420 workstations are supported for both secondary network and USB
2.0/USB3.0 hard drive backups.
Symantec System Recovery can be used on I/A Series workstations running I/A Series software
v8.2, or later, and having at least 1 GB of RAM.

Rules
The rules for using Symantec System Recovery are:
♦ Data Protection Server (DPS) or remote storage location must be on a separate, pri-
vate, and preferably dedicated network for the backup and restore functions. (DPS
cannot be connected directly to the I/A Series Nodebus, The Mesh control network,
or VLAN of Mesh networks.)
♦ I/A Series workstations are connected to DPS or remote storage via a 1 Gbit switched
network using H90/H91/H92 and P90/P91/P92 second or third Ethernet connec-
tions. The approved 1 Gb switches are Invensys part numbers P0923QM and
P0923VU.
♦ Follow the performance rules given in the following subsection.

Configuration Rules for Improved Performance

The Symantec System Recovery package must be configured to limit its utilization of workstation
resources during backup operations to ensure that the workstation has enough reserve perfor-
mance capacity to support temporary peak loads for virus scanning, alarm bursts, alarm recovery,
historian data reduction, historian archiving, large application startups, end of shift reports, file
printing, file copies, and so forth.
After installation, the default Symantec System Recovery configuration utilizes as much of the
CPU processing power and as much of the available network bandwidth as the workstation
allows. The following configuration settings support the recommendations of The MESH Control

5
B0700EY – Rev A 2. Features of Symantec System Recovery and Supported

Network System Planning and Sizing (B0700AX) and System Planning and Sizing (B0193BF) while
ensuring adequate backup performance.
Determine the sustained CPU load of the workstation or server before executing a Symantec Sys-
tem Recovery backup operation. You can use the Task Manager or Performance Monitor for this.
Select Slow or Fast CPU Default Performance based on the recommendations in Table 2-1
below. Backups performed with CPU Default Performance set to Fast complete in approxi-
mately half the amount of time as backups performed with CPU Default Performance set to
Slow. However, the CPU load is considerably higher with CPU Default Performance set to Fast.

Example 1
Consider a T3500 installed with I/A Series software v8.2 that has a sustained CPU load of
approximately 22%.
Symantec System Recovery CPU Default Performance may be set to Fast, allowing you to per-
form backup operations more quickly without reducing the performance of the workstation.

Example 2
A Z420 is installed with I/A Series software v8.2 and has a sustained CPU load of approximately
40%.
Symantec System Recovery CPU Default Performance must be set to Slow, forcing Symantec
System Recovery to consume fewer workstation resources in order to minimize impact on the per-
formance of the workstation.

Table 2-1. Workstations on The MESH Network

Sustained CPU Load Symantec System Recovery Guideline

>30% ♦ Set CPU Default Performance to Slow
♦ Throttle workstation’s network connection to 100 MB1
♦ Use standard compression
30% or less ♦ Set CPU Default Performance to Fast
♦ Throttle workstation’s network connection to 100 MB1
♦ Use standard compression

! CAUTION
These guidelines should ensure that the backup operation does not consume more
than 50% of the workstation’s CPU load reserve. If more than 50% of the reserve is
consumed, then the following performance settings are recommended:
- Set the CPU Default Performance to Slow
- Throttle workstation’s network connection to 100 MB1
- Use standard compression.

To control workstation performance during backup operations, start Symantec System Recovery
and configure the default options as follows:

1. Throttling the network has no impact on backup operations performed to locally attached USB hard
drives.

6
2. Features of Symantec System Recovery and Supported Platforms B0700EY – Rev A

To minimize the CPU usage:

1. On the top menu bar, click Tasks > Options.
2. Click Performance.
3. Move the slider all the way to the left, i.e., Slow.
4. Click OK.
To enable network throttling to 100 MB:
1. On the top menu bar, click Tasks > Options.
2. Click Performance.
3. Check Enable network throttling.
4. In the Maximum network throttling field, enter 102400 (that is, 102400 KB) of net-
work throughput that Symantec System Recovery can send per second.
5. Click OK.

Recovery Software on the
Workstation, Server, or Virtual
Machine
This chapter gives instructions to install the Symantec System Recovery 2013 Desktop, Server
and Virtual Editions on I/A Series® systems.
Prior to installing Symantec System Recovery, review the following notes.

NOTE
If a workstation is configured for a RAID set, the hard drive RAID set, including
any hot spares, should be configured using the systems Option ROM utility prior to
installation of the operating system. Replacement of a failed hard drive member of
the RAID set requires the user to stop the “Symantec System Recovery” service
prior to adding the replacement drive as a member of the RAID set. Refer to the
hardware and software specific instructions provided with your workstation for
additional details.

NOTE
If a USB hard drive is plugged into the machine prior to the installation of Syman-
tec System Recovery 2013 software, the USB hard drive will be found and identified
as a default target backup device. If the USB hard drive is not plugged into the
machine prior to the installation of Symantec System Recovery 2013 software,
when the drive is plugged in later, it will be identified as a backup device and can be
configured to be the primary target backup device. This document supports plug-
ging in the USB external hard drive after installation of Symantec System Recovery
software.

NOTE
When using an external USB hard drive, it should be noted that many of these
drives require either reformatting or initialization and formatting, including the
Invensys-approved models. Many USB external drives are formatted as FAT and,
although using Symantec System Recovery software with drives formatted as FAT
will work, it is recommended that the external drive be reformatted to NTFS format
prior to using it as a backup device. Formatting with NTFS allows for individual
backups to be in single, continuous and easy-to-identify files, whereas the FAT for-
mat segments the backups into 4 GB slices.
For instructions on initializing and formatting, refer to Appendix A “Initializing,
Partitioning, and Formatting the LaCie USB Hard Drive”.

NOTE
Use Symantec System Recovery 2013 Virtual Edition for installation on Model V90
Server Virtualization Hosts and Virtual Machines.

Perform the steps in this chapter to install Symantec System Recovery software.

5. Configuring and Setting up
Symantec System Recovery
Software
This chapter discusses configuring and setting up Symantec System Recovery 2013 Desktop,
Server and Virtual Editions for I/A Series Initial Backup. There are two ways that you can
backup your workstations or servers: backing up to a network location or backing up to an
external USB hard drive. Both techniques are described in the following section.

NOTE
Backing up and Restoring Virtual Machines using Symantec System Recovery
As virtual machines have no access to the physical USB ports on their V90 server
virtualization hosts, only backup and restore operations to a network location are
supported for the virtual machines.

Perform the following steps to configure and set up Symantec System Recovery 2013 software.
1. If the Symantec System Recovery program is not running, start it now. Click Start >
Programs > Symantec System Recovery > Symantec System Recovery 2013.

Appendix A. Initializing,
Partitioning, and Formatting the
LaCie USB Hard Drive
This appendix provides instructions for partitioning, initializing and formatting the LaCie
USB hard drive.
Invensys supports multiple versions of LaCie USB hard drives. These USB drives may vary in size,
format and partitioning. When using the LaCie USB hard drives as a workstation or server
backup destination, it should be noted these drives may require initialization, partitioning, and
reformatting. Some instances of these drives may contain a “setup” partition that may be format-
ted as FAT.
This section provides instructions for partitioning and formatting the LaCie USB hard drives to
the NTFS format. Formatting with NTFS allows for individual backups to be in single, continu-
ous, and easy-to-identify files; whereas, the FAT format segments the backups into 4 GB slices.
New Lacie USB hard drives require formatting for use with Symantec System Recovery software.
The following steps provide the necessary instructions to partition and format the LaCie USB
hard drives.
1. Plug the drive into an available USB port, right-click the My Computer icon, and
select Manage.
2. Under Storage, click Disk Management.
Depending on the hard drive, a display appears showing:
♦ A USB hard drive with a single unallocated partition (similar to Figure A-1), or
♦ A USB hard drive with two partitions: a setup partition and an unallocated parti-
tion (similar to Figure A-2).

Appendix D. Backup and Restore of
the Model V90 Server
Virtualization Host (DL380)
This appendix provides specific instructions for backup and restore of Model V90 Server
Virtualization Host machine. The objective is to provide the users with additional detailed
instructions on the differences in the backup and restore of Model V90 Server Virtualization
Host machine not included in the backup and restore sections of this document.
The instructions for backup and restore of the Model V90 Server Virtualization Host machine are
virtually identical to the procedures documented earlier for workstations and servers except for the
addition of the "System Reserved" partition. This partition may or may not exist depending on
the style of your V90 Server Virtualization Host machine. If the "System Reserved" partition does
exist, it contains important boot configuration information and therefore must be included in the
"backup" and "restore" of the V90 server Virtualization Host. If the "System Reserved" partition
does not exist ignore these instructions.

D.1 Backup Differences of the Model V90 Server
