Nature and scope of HRM:

Assignment 1 – It is good to read that people management has matured from Industrial Relations (IR) to
Personnel Management (PM) to Human Resource Management (HRM). But has the change been only
cosmetic or real? Put some practical examples to support.

Assignment 2 – Choose 5 companies from an industry of your choice and do the comparative analysis of
their Human resource management policies.

Assignment 3 – Sushil Srivastava is the Managing Director of a growing e-commerce organization. Being
new in the industry, he hasn’t set-up any HR department in his organization for extra cost saving.
Srivastava himself spend time in managing people of his organization resulting in giving most of his time
on people issues. Is this the time Srivastava should consider setting up an HR department and hiring HR
Professionals? How it will help him?

Assignment 4 – Choose one well-established organization. Gather information about the organization’s
goals and objectives. Find out how the structure of the organization. Write down the HR structure in the
organization. Why do you think HR is structured in this way?

Context of HRM:

Assignment 5 – It is a general belief that recommendations form politicians and corporates can help
people to secure jobs. Is this true in today’s changing corporate environment? Does it the same for both
public and private sector organizations? If you are an HR manager how would you handle such
situations?

Assignment 6 – In today’s time, a diverse workforce is changing the way HR departments function in the
organization. Pick the top 10 organizations (Indian context) and find out their diversity and inclusion
policies, activities and initiatives they brought out to manage diversity.

Assignment 7 – Technology robs jobs. What are your views on this? How true is it in Indian Context?
Write down 10 practical examples of workforce layoffs due to technological advancement.

Assignment 8 – Identify 5 companies and collect information on the external and internal HR-related
challenges they face. It could be generic industry challenges or specific and related to close competitors.
Do a comparative analysis based on the following points:

Assignment 9 - As the HR manager you have been informed by the top level of management that teams
will be implemented for the production floor. They have asked you to meet with the supervisors to
devise a plan of action to develop the teams and ensure their success. What would be the plan of
action?

Strategic Human Resource Management:

Assignment 10 – HR roles in strategic management are very little in practice. Rarely is HR executive
consulted in vital decisions, such as mergers or acquisitions. Talk to the select HR executives and
discover the truth.

Assignment 11 – Take 2 big mergers and acquisitions in India and try to identify the key HRM Strategies
followed by the organizations.

India?

Human Resource Planning:

Assignment 13 – SSS (Pvt) Ltd. is a family-owned organization where all the top positions are held by the
owner’s relatives. This is making it difficult for the HR manager to retain talent in key positions of the
organization. What should the HR manager do?

Assignment 14 – Paul, the subordinate to James, the production head, is always asking when he is
getting promoted, but James feels, Paul is not fit for promotion. What can James do to prevent Paul
from pestering and leaving the company?

Assignment 15 – A five-year-old firm finally broke even in the fifth year of its existence. For the sixth
year business plan, the management wants to double the firm’s headcount to meet the business goals.
What do you suggest?

Assignment 16 – Take 10 positions of any organization of your choice and make a comprehensive list of

would you as an HR manager convince the MD about the usefulness of HRP?

Analysis of Work, Designing Jobs, and Job Evaluation:

Assignment 20 – Take 5 different companies (manufacturing, banking, IT, retail, Power), choose one job
position from each company and analyze these jobs based on the information required for the job
analysis process

Assignment 21 – An usual practice among organizations is to place all jobs into two categories: technical
and non-technical. Identify 10 jobs from different companies of different sectors and find out the
authenticity of the above statement.

Assignment 22 – Amazon.com is one company that has de-jobbing practice. Here a worker is switching
from job to job in three months’ intervals. The organization puts more emphasis on broader worker
specifications than on detailed job descriptions. Find out more about amazon’s de-jobbing policy. Do
you find any organization in India that is practicing de-jobbing?

Assignment 23 – Apply the 6 methods of collecting job data to the roles of a professor and a principal.
Observe key differences between the two jobs and ascertain which method is best for each role.

Assignment 24 - create a job design for each of the following jobs:

2. Receptionist
3. Executive Assistant
4. Sale Representative

Assignment 25 – Take 5 different job profiles (Professor, Information system executive, personal
assistant, front desk executive and sales representative) and decide, as an HR manager, how would you
enrich their jobs?

Recruiting Talent:

Assignment 26 – Think of 5 firms you want to submit a job application. List of all factors which attract
you towards the company.
Assignment 27 – You are working in retail MNC as an HR Manager. The north based organization is
recently expanding its operations into south India. The company has given you the task of recruitment of
the entire team. Which factors should be considered in recruitment and what steps will you take to
complete the recruitment process
