1. A reversed Carnot cycle engine working as a heat pump between 10


and 24 ºC and as refrigerating machine between -10 and 10 ºC if the
engine power is 1.5 kw find :
a) The refrigerating capacity of the refrigerating machine in T.O.R.
b) The heating capacity of the heat pump in kW.

2. A Carnot refrigeration cycle of cooling capacity 16000 W with -12 ºC


low temperature and 42 ºC high temperature. Calculate the COP, the
power required and the amount of heat rejection.

3. An ideal one cylinder R-717 compressor has a bore and stroke of 110
mm both of them and speed of 500 rpm and clearance ratio of 4 %. The
cycle operates between 1.8 bar and 16 bar. Calculate the cooling
capacity, the power required assuming mechanical efficiency of 82 %
and the heat rejection in condenser in kW.

4. An ice making plant produces 20 tons of ice per day at -4 ºC from water
at 25 ºC. Refrigeration losses are 10 % of the product load. A 3-cylinder
ammonia compressor is to be installed of: speed 400 rpm, stroke=bore,
volumetric efficiency = 75 % and mechanical efficiency = 80 %. The
operating pressures are 2 bar and 14 bar. The specific heat of ice is
2.093 kJ/kg K and latent heat of freezing 335 kJ/kg. Calculate:
a) Cooling capacity in tons-ref.
b) Power required for compressor in kW.
c) Bore and stroke in mm.
d) Condenser water in m3/hr for temperature rise 5 ºC
e) Actual COP.

5. A single stage R-22 refrigeration system operates under the following
conditions: evaporating temperature -10 ºC, suction is superheated by
15 ºC, condensing temperature = 40 ºC, cooling capacity = 25 tons-ref,
compressor speed = 1000 rpm, number of cylinders = 2, stroke/bore =
0.8, volumetric efficiency = 75 %, mechanical efficiency = 80 % and
the temperature rise in condenser cooling water = 5 ºC. If a heat
exchanger is used in the compressor suction line and the condenser
liquid line, estimate the power required in kW, the bore and stroke in
mm, the condenser cooling water in m3/hr. and the actual COP.

6. A refrigeration cycle for R-22 system operates at 40 ºC condensing


temperature and -30 ºC evaporating temperature. The system is used to
freeze 3 tons of fish from 25 ºC to -20ºC in 10 hours. The thermal
properties of fish are: specific heat before freezing = 3.35 kJ/kg K,
specific heat after freezing = 1.67 kJ/kg K, freezing temperature = -2
ºC and latent heat of freezing = 251 kJ/kg. The compressor
specifications are: bore = 100 mm, stroke = 120 mm, speed = 1000 rpm,
volumetric efficiency = 77 % and mechanical efficiency = 80 %. Find:
a) Cooling capacity in tons-ref.
b) Power required in kW.
c) Number of cylinders.
d) Actual COP.

7. An Air Cooled Condenser Water Chiller of an all water central air


conditioning system using R-22 obtains chilled water at 5 ºC while the
return temperature is 10 ºC. The temperature difference between
leaving chilled water and the evaporator is 8 ºC. The condensing
temperature is 47 ºC. The water chiller has the following compressor
specifications: number of circuits = 2, number of compressors per
circuit = 4, number of cylinder per compressor = 8, bore = 75 mm,
stroke = 60 mm, speed = 1450 rpm, volumetric efficiency 75 % and
mechanical efficiency = 80 %. Calculate:
a) The cooling capacity in tons-ref.
b) The chilled water rate in m3/hr.
c) The power of one compressor in kW.
d) The condenser air in m3/hr for 8 ºC rise.
e) Actual COP

8. An ammonia compressor has a cooling capacity of 12 tons-ref at an
evaporating pressure of 2 bar and condensing pressure of 14 bar.
Estimate the isentropic power required in kW and COP [ Assume
clearance ratio 5% and the actual volumetric efficiency is 85 % from
the theoretical value ] . Estimate the cooling capacity, power and COP
for the following values of pressures:
a) Suction = 4 bar, condensing = 14 bar.
b) Suction = 2 bar, condensing = 16 bar.
c) Suction = 4 bar, condensing = 16 bar.
