Philosophy of Education

My decision to pursue a career in teaching was to make a positive impact in the lives of

children. Throughout my educational experiences, I have witnessed a wide array of teachers and

teaching styles. I have been in classes that have largely impacted my life, and others that have left a

mere dent of influence. I have come to be able to differentiate between the characteristics that

comprise a good teacher, and those that do quite the opposite.

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating

atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my

goal as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an

environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are elements that I

believe are conducive to establishing such an environment; the teacher acting as a guide, allowing the

child's natural curiosity to direct their learning, and teacher effectiveness.

When the teacher's role is to guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the

primary source of information, the students' search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answers

to their questions. By allowing time to explore hands-on materials, it gives each student the

opportunity to understand the concepts of the lesson. I understand affective teachers is one that can

teach lessons both inside and outside the classroom, one that can establish a personal connection with

their students, and one that former students remember well into their adult lives. I plan to use

summative and formative assessments to help frame meaningful goals for each student.

I also believe teacher effectiveness is a huge key in classroom management. Thomas Gordon

promotes teacher effectiveness, which offers teachers the essential communication and conflict

resolution skills they need to have high quality relationships with their students so there will be less

conflict and more teaching-learning time.

It is evident that anyone who is looking to enter the profession of teaching must have passion

for others, for their discipline, and for the cause of impacting society. Also, it is extremely important to

be able to function as a team with the faculty, students, and parents, because this will help shape the

framework for the learning that will take place in the classroom.

As a teacher, I must provide the best education I can for the students no matter the extend of

work this may take. I plan to continue my education by finishing my degree in Elementary Education,

taking professional development classes and attending teaching conferences. Overall, I must be

determined toward excellency for those I teach.
