ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
A steel rod of 50 mm diameter is subjected to a force as shown in
figure. Find the elongation of the rod. Take E=2*105 N/mm2 .

6. a Re CO1 10

A reinforced concrete column 500 mm x 500 mm in section is
reinforced with 4 steel bars of 25 mm diameter; one in each
b corner, the column is carrying a load of 1000 kN. Find the stresses Ev CO1 10
in the concrete and steel bars.
Take Esteel = 210x103N/mm2 and ECon = 14x103N/mm2.
A steel rod of 3 cm diameter and 5m long is connected to two
grips and the rod is maintained at a temperature of 95◦C.
7.a Determine the stress and pull exerted when the temperature falls Ev CO1 10
to 30◦C, if (i) The ends do not yield, and (ii) The ends yield by
0.12 cm. Take E = 2 x 106 MN/m2 and α = 12 x 10-6 /◦C.
(OR)
A bar 30 mm in diameter was subjected to a tensile load of 54 kN
and measured extension on 300 mm gauge length was 0.112 mm and
b Ev CO1 10
change in diameter was 0.00366 mm. Calculate Poisson’s ratio and
the values of three elastic modulii.
A steel plate 300 mm long. 60 mm wide and 30 mm deep is acted
upon by the forces shown in figure. Determine the change in
volume. Take E = 200 kN/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

A beam is freely supported over a span of 6m. It carries a UDL of
3kN/m over 1.5m from the left hand support and also from the centre
upto the right hand support. It has, besides, two point loads of 2 and
5kN at 1.5 and 4.5m from left hand support. Construct the SF and BM
diagrams.
