C Subject Science - Scientific Investigation, Reasoning, and Logic

o
Grade Level 4th Grade
n
t Learning Objective 4.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of
e scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by
n planning and conducting investigations in which:
t
h) hypotheses are developed as cause and effect relationships;

P Online Activity This activity is designed to be used in a week by week

e asynchronous course. Students will be able to access the activity
d information online every Monday; which will be due the
a following Monday. The teacher will ensure all necessary and
g supplementary information is provided so students can access
o additional references as needed; such as an explanatory video
g for the assignment below.

For this activity students will be creating simple hypotheses

regarding the introduction of cold and heat to solids, liquids, and
gases. This activity is meant to give students a real-life
opportunity to conduct a data-collection experiment which will
support what they have learned about cause and effect and
building hypotheses. Students will be able to alter the states of
matter using virtual flames and cooling methods.

Students will access the link provided by the teacher and begin
the first part of the activity. After clicking the link students will
select STATES. To collect data, students will use the lever at the
bottom to introduce cold and heat to each state of matter. The
students can switch between solid, liquid, and gas by clicking on
the yellow tabs on the right hand side of the screen. As students
are conducting their experiments they must write down their
observations for each state of matter. Below is an example of
how students can organize their observations as they conduct
their experiments.

For the second part of the activity students will decide what is
the cause and what is the effect according to the data collected.
They will use that information to build their hypotheses. Causes
make things happen and effects are the results. Students will
create three hypotheses using the “if...then…” format and write
them down.

To submit their data and hypotheses to the teacher, students

have a variety of options; they can create a video describing
their findings, create a slideshow or powerpoint, type it up, or
write it out and scan or photograph it.
