00:18 dignity of work and the rights of 00:21 workers 00:23 woe to him who builds his house on wrong 00:26 his terraces on injustice who works his 00:30 neighbor without pay and gives him no 00:32 wages 00:34 whether capitalist socialist or 00:36 otherwise the economic system of a 00:39 society is extremely important because 00:41 it has an impact on everyone Catholic 00:44 teaching is that the economy must serve 00:46 people not the other way around for a 00:49 Christian work is more than a way to 00:51 make a living it's a form of continuing 00:54 participation in God's creation and so 00:57 it has great dignity to repeat whether 01:00 you are a medical professional who heals 01:02 people an artist who paints beautiful 01:05 portraits or a sanitation worker who 01:08 keeps your community healthy by 01:10 collecting garbage and recycling 01:12 plastics you are participating in God's 01:15 creative activity and your work has 01:18 great value and dignity but if the 01:21 dignity of work is to be protected then 01:23 the basic rights of workers must be 01:25 respected the right to productive work 01:28 the right to decent and fair wages the 01:31 right of workers to organize and join or 01:34 form unions the right to private 01:36 property and the right to economic 01:38 initiative employees are not things to 01:42 be used and discarded they are human 01:44 beings with as much dignity and value as 01:47 their employers and stockholders in the 01:50 words of pope john paul ii all people 01:54 have the right to economic initiative to 01:56 productive work to just wages and 01:58 benefits the decent working conditions 02:00 as well as to organize and join unions 02:03 or other associations all these rights 02:06 together with the need for the workers 02:08 themselves to secure them give rise to 02:10 yet another right the right of 02:12 association that is to form associations 02:14 for the purpose of defending the vital 02:16 interests of those employed in the 02:18 various professions these associations 02:20 are called labor or trade unions 02:26 the sixth theme of Catholic social 02:29 teaching solidarity 02:32 blessed are the peacemakers for they 02:35 will be called children of God 02:39 Catholics believe there is one God who 02:41 was the father of us all yes we have 02:44 many differences National racial ethnic 02:47 economic religious and ideological but 02:51 we are nonetheless a single human family 02:55 we who belong to the Catholic Church the 02:58 word Catholic means universal 03:01 or global we are taught by Jesus that we 03:04 are our brothers and sisters keepers 03:05 whether they be next-door or halfway 03:08 around the world in a shrinking world 03:11 like ours a world of social media loving 03:14 our neighbor has global dimensions the 03:17 main way we express and live out 03:18 solidarity with all of God's children 03:20 around the world is the pursuit of 03:23 justice in peace and it is good to 03:26 remember the words of Pope Paul the 03:27 sixth when he visited the United Nations 03:30 he said if you want peace work for 03:34 justice our love for all our sisters and 03:37 brothers demands that in a world filled 03:39 with violence and war we Christians must 03:42 promote peace and the nonviolent 03:44 resolution of conflicts as Pope John 03:48 Paul the second put it solidarity is not 03:52 a feeling of vague compassion or shallow 03:54 distress at the misfortunes of so many 03:56 people both near and far on the contrary 03:58 it is a firm and persevering 04:00 determination to commit oneself to the 04:02 common good that is to say to the good 04:05 of all and of each individual because we 04:07 are all really responsible for all 04:11 the seventh and final theme of Catholic 04:14 social teaching care for God's creation 04:18 the Lord God then took the man and 04:21 settled him in the Garden of Eden to 04:23 cultivating care for it 04:26 we show our respect for God the Creator 04:29 by our stewardship of his creation care 04:32 for the earth is not just an earth day 04:34 slogan it's a requirement of our faith 04:37 the earth and all it contains and 04:40 provides belongs to God not to us we are 04:44 merely stewards or managers not owners 04:47 and God will hold us responsible for how 04:50 well we manage his earth and its 04:52 resources God trusts us to share the 04:56 earth's resources and to protect his 04:58 people and planet he trusts us to live 05:01 our faith in a healthy relationship with 05:03 all of creation and there are many 05:06 challenges related to our stewardship 05:08 today such as air and water pollution 05:11 contamination of the soil global warming 05:14 as Pope Francis has described in his 05:17 apostolic exhortation laudato see this 05:21 environmental challenge has fundamental 05:24 moral and ethical dimensions that cannot 05:26 be ignored may the relationship between 05:30 man and nature not be driven by greed to 05:33 manipulate and exploit but may the 05:35 divine harmony between beings and 05:36 creation be conserved in the logic of 05:38 respect and care 05:41 so there they are the seven major themes 05:44 of Catholic social teaching be aware 05:47 that this brief summary is merely a 05:49 starting point for understanding and 05:51 living according to Catholic social 05:53 teaching a full understanding can only 05:55 be achieved by reading the documents 05:58 written by Pope's ecumenical councils 06:00 and pastoral letters from our bishops 06:02 together they make up this rich 06:04 tradition for more information see the 06:07 many high school textbooks on the social 06:09 teaching of the church that are 06:11 available and visit the website of the 06:13 American bishops the
