Active or Passive Voice


Voice indicates the form of transitive verb that shows whether the subject is the doer or the receiver of the action.
The active voice shows that the subject is the doer of the action.
Example: Our group danced the Tinikling.
My uncle caught the huge fish.
The passive voice shows the subject is the receiver of the action.
Example: The Tinikling was danced by our group.
The huge fish was caught by my uncle.

Basic Rules:
1. Identify the subject, the verb and the direct object. STVDO
Ella baked a birthday cake
S TV DO
2. Change the object into the subject.
A birthday cake was baked by Ella.
Object auxiliary verb+ past participle Subject
3. Put the suitable helping verb or auxiliary verb
4. Change the verb into the past participle of the verb.
5. Add the preposition ‘by’
6. Change the subject into the object.

Exercise 1. Underline the verb in each sentence and identify if the voice is Active or Passive.

Exercise 2. Fill in the blank with the passive form of the verb in the parenthesis. (Present Form)

Exercise 3: Rewrite the following sentences changing the Active voice to Passive voice.
Example: The guests enjoyed the party.
Answer. The party was enjoyed by the guests.
