The Fluency Course - Getting Started Guide For Teachers

Welcome to The Fluency Course!

Welcome to The Fluency Course, EnglishAnyone.com’s fast fluency and speaking confidence program.
This teacher’s guide will introduce our language teaching philosophy, give you an overview of the Master
English Conversation 2.0 lesson sets comprising The Fluency Course, explain the individual lessons and give
you some great ways to use the program in your classes.

Important note: The principles you’ll find below will help you teach any ability level, but Master English
Conversation is recommended for intermediate level students and up. If your students already understand
most of the English in textbooks, but are struggling with the native English words and pronunciation found
in real conversations, Master English Conversation will help them close the gap to fluency and speaking
confidence.

The following ideas form the foundation of the EnglishAnyone.com teaching philosophy:

1. No matter the ability level of the student(s), lessons should be logical and intuitive:

Let’s look at an example math problem so you understand this important language acquisition principle:

2+x=4 x=?

Anyone who knows basic math should be able to solve this problem because you’re looking for only one
element. The rest of the values are known, so you can use them to solve the equation.

Let’s try another:

x+y=z x=?

The answer, in short, is ANYTHING. And that’s the problem. There’s no anchor, compass or star to direct you
towards one obvious conclusion because the answer depends on what numbers you use.
In the world of language learning, this exact problem is often thrust upon unwary students… And with
devastating consequences.
Open virtually any beginning English textbook, or watch the first lesson of almost any English video course,
and you’ll most likely find something like this:

The Fluency Course - Getting Started Guide For Teachers
My name is Tom. What’s your name?

This English may seem simple to teachers, but it’s actually a recipe for pain. Even if students understand the
context that greetings are being taught, there is absolutely no way to understand the grammar or words
intuitively. These two sentences introduce… the phonetic rules of English, possessive determiners, verb
conjugation, identity, grammar, new vocabulary, sentence structure for statements and questions AND
contractions.

Here’s how you help the brain learn automatically:

“This is a cat.”
“That is a cat.”

Notice how only one word is different? Even if a student doesn’t know ANY of the words in these sentences,
by using them together (with something visual to demonstrate the locations of cats in relation to the
learner), the brain automatically understands that the words “this” and “that” are expressing object location.
The rest of the words in the sentence may remain unintelligible, but “this” and “that” become crystal clear.
When the brain understands logically, because the context is understood, learning becomes simple, fast and
fun.

2. Don’t teach rules explicitly when ideas and concepts can be understood intuitively:

The explicit teaching of grammar and pronunciation rules has evolved because many teachers DON’T
make lessons intuitive (principle 1). In conversations with native speakers, most students think in their own
language before speaking (either to remember a rule, or to translate something). The teaching of rules adds
an extra step for learners, and most of these rules aren’t remembered anyway. Ask any native English speaker
to give you an example of a past participle, and they probably won’t be able to. Luckily, that information isn’t
necessary to USE a past participle in a conversation automatically.

Don’t EXPLAIN how to make the past forms of verbs, SHOW how this happens in context. Once you’ve built
up a basic vocabulary using the approach outlined above, you can begin introducing grammar in the same
way:

“Yesterday, I went to the bank.”

“Tomorrow, I will go to the bank.”

In this way, what we call grammar “remixing,” students understand how grammar rules work automatically,
and begin developing an important sense for what’s correct.
3. To help students develop memory and great pronunciation, teach words in groups:

The human brain is not designed to memorize lists. But give it a good story, and it can recall the smallest of
trivial details. Teaching is all about helping learners connect with information, either by turning information
into a sticky, memorable story, or by using analogies and mnemonics, or memory aids, to help students
connect new information with what they already know. (Click here to watch our Power Learning video

course for more LOTS information on this.)

Words by themselves aren’t very memorable, and their pronunciations often change in conversations, so
work with students to learn words in groups/ as phrases (like you’ll see in the lessons) and practice blending
sounds so they’ll understand native English, and be able to speak without worrying that people won’t be
able to understand them.

4. You must teach the real, spoken language, and have students practice speaking:

Nothing frustrates students more than having NO IDEA what native speakers are actually saying in
conversations, even though they receive great scores on listening practice tests. Native speakers use faster
speech and, often, vocabulary and expressions not taught in school, so students have to learn a completely
new language–actual, native English–once they begin practicing in the real world.

Listening practice CDs feature actors and slow, textbook English, so students never get exposed to the real
English native speakers actually use. This English is fine for test preparation, but if you want to prepare your
students for native English, you must introduce native English in lessons.

There probably isn’t a lot of time for individual speaking practice in lessons, but if students are to become
great speakers, they must spend at least some time speaking. Speaking is also a great way to help students
memorize new grammar and vocabulary automatically.

5. Students must practice in the real world:

Homework assignments must be exercises in the real world, either online or “in the wild” with local native
speakers. As a teacher, you need to show students how they can get out and practice what they’re learning,
or they’ll never build speaking confidence. The monthly Special Mission Homework Assignments, the
cornerstone of Master English Conversation, will give you everything you need to help students meet native
speakers and have fun practicing, no matter where they live in the world.

Understanding this simple framework, here’s how Master English Conversation works, and how you can use
it in your lessons:

The Insight
Begin teaching with this important video lesson. It reveals a simple idea that will help you and your learners
achieve anything you desire. It has been the secret of my success for many years and I’m thrilled to share it
with you now! Once learners understand the message of The Insight, they will have the confidence to begin
working through their new Master English Conversation 2.0 lesson sets and achieve fluency. :)

Meet the Fluency Bridge Learning System

Each Master English Conversation 2.0 lesson set will guide your learners step-by-step from the textbook
English they already know to the native, conversational English they want to speak.

To create each lesson set, we begin by recording a video conversation between two or more native speakers.
Each conversation is unscripted and spontaneous, just like the ones learners experience in their everyday
lives.

After recording, we produce special video and audio lessons to help you understand the parts of fluency –
the grammar, idioms, slang, culture and more – found in the video conversation.

When students learn with Master English Conversation 2.0, they’ll master the parts of fluency before
seeing how they come together in the real conversation. In this way, they’ll be prepared for native English,
train their ears to understand even fast native speakers, improve their pronunciation, and build speaking
confidence automatically.

The Study Schedule

A total of 16 lesson sets are included in this special collection. (There are six core lesson set and
four bonus lesson sets.) Students can begin with any lesson set they like, but I recommend they follow
the lessons in that lesson set in order. They’re welcome to follow the outline below for a steady pace
of improvement, or work through the lesson sets as quickly as possible to build fluency and speaking
confidence rapidly. Just make sure they really master one lesson set before moving to the next.
(Mastery means they can use everything they’ve learned without hesitation in their conversations.)

Each lesson SET contains eight lessons – four video lessons (with audio versions and transcripts), and four

The Fluency Course - Getting Started Guide For Teachers

audio lessons (with transcripts).

For the Fluency Bridge method to work properly, students must study just one lesson SET for a full
month, and focus on EACH LESSON in the set – and only one lesson – for about 4 days in a row. Study
should be for at least one hour each day for best results – all at one time, or in blocks of15, 20 or 30
minutes – to really master each lesson. If learners have time for more than one hour of learning and
practice each day, fantastic!

** The Special Mission Homework Assignments are essential to building fluency and speaking
confidence. Learners should focus on one each month to make great progress. **

To challenge their brains, help them remember what they study and stay motivated, have students use
the following techniques with each lesson. They should spend each day focusing on just one of the
techniques below for each lesson (pick three or four for each lesson):

1. Read the transcript of a lesson to get comfortable with it. Just read for fun, like they would read a
newspaper, comic or story you like.

2. Watch the video and/or listen to the audio lesson many, many times.

3. Write sections of each lesson to slow down the speech and push it deep into their brains. Just have them
select a minute or two of speech and dictate it. Then take the sentences and, keeping the same structure/
grammar, add your own words. This will help them develop the flow of conversational speech. The more
they write conversational English, the more they will use it automatically when they speak.

4. Speak along with the video or audio lesson. This will test their memory and improve their pronunciation.
This is ideal practice for when they’re alone. Students should copy what the speakers do exactly, and try to
make their words blend with the speaker’s. They should carefully copy the intonation and pronunciation
they hear. Then learners should take what they’ve learned and speak with others. They must use what they
learn in your conversations.

5. Teach what they’ve learned to someone else. When they can teach a grammar point, expression or
cultural idea, they’ve really mastered it.

Each lesson has a different theme, but you can follow the basic study format above for really great results!

They should also print out each transcript so they can take notes and highlight important things. Also,
have them write down what they learn in a special phrase journal. Learners should just buy a notebook
they can use to write important words and phrases. Both of these will help them remember new words and
phrases, and improve your spelling.

The more effort and attention students give to the program, the faster it will help them improve.

What Students Get and What They’ll Learn

Have students take one month to review the lessons in the order below. Remember that students
should spend five days – and at least one hour each day – on each lesson.

1A – The Grammar Focus Video Lesson

This themed video lesson helps students master a specific grammar point that appears frequently in the
video conversation by “seeing it in action.” It will also help them learn new words and improve their listening
ability.

1B – The Bonus Time Traveling Audio Lesson

This audio lesson trains students to use the month’s grammar point automatically – and develop their own
English voice – by listening to stories told in different grammar tenses, at different speeds and by different
speakers. Students should not think about the grammar rules as they listen! They should just relax and focus
on understanding the MEANING of each version of the story.

In lessons, begin by having students listen to the different versions of the Time Traveling lesson story. Once
they understand the format, have them work in groups, or individually, to see if they can write and tell the
story again from the perspective of different speakers, at different speeds and in different tenses. The goal
here is to have students understand grammar naturally, and learn to tell stories in a native way. When they
can tell the story to others with confidence, they’ve mastered it.

2 – The Phrase Builder Video Lesson

This video lesson teaches learners the pronunciation patterns and “flow” of conversational English, and trains
their ears to recognize the blended sounds of native speakers. Students should watch this lesson many,
many times to learn lots of great phrases, idioms, slang and expressions, perfect for both conversational and
professional situations.

To work on blending sounds, so students develop great pronunciation, build lessons around specific phrases
from the video. Have students compare what they hear with what’s in the transcript. Show that though
words are written individually, sounds are actually blended together to form phrases when spoken. Here’s an
example:

In a transcript, you may see something like, “No, it isn’t.” However, the native English, “blended” form of this is,
“No, Wi Di Zint.” Don’t be afraid to write things phonetically on the board and really talk about this with your
students.

You can also write phrases on the board and see if students can blend the sounds like native speakers, and
show additional video clips, like sections of movies, to illustrate blended speaking in action. If you have
the time, I HIGHLY recommend you make recordings of the voices of your students so you can track their
improvement over time.

3 – The Fluency Corner Video Lesson
This video lesson helps students think like native speakers. Each month, a topic connected with the monthly
conversation will reveal the culture of English speakers and explain why we do the things we do in English.
Students will learn things like how to move like native English speakers, discover lots of great expressions
and will build fluency naturally.

Have students practice with this lesson by using the new words as often as they can in conversations and
comments online. You can also create fun activities for students to practice using what they learn using the
examples provided in lessons.

4 – The Master Class Video Lesson

This video lesson shows students how everything they’ll have learned from the first four lessons comes
together in a native English conversation. They’ll see how native speakers joke, tell stories, interrupt each
other, use incorrect grammar, and much, much more, as they build their fluency just like native speakers. If
they have really mastered the first four lessons, this video will be incredibly fun and satisfying for them to
watch! :)

Conversations can be long, so introduce them in sections if you want to move more slowly. Students will
learn something new each time they watch.

A Special Mission Homework Assignment (Included in the Master Class Video Lesson)
This part of the Master Class video lesson gives students a special fluency training mission to help them
get out and practice in the real world. Some assignments will teach them phrases to practice, while others
will help them build their confidence with important lessons on psychology and learning. This part of the
Fluency Bridge is essential to building fluency, so challenge students to complete the assignment.

5 – The Question Everything Audio Lesson

This special audio lesson lets students practice speaking with us. They’ll hear lots of questions about the
month’s lessons and answer – in a loud, confident voice - as if they were in a real conversation.

Have them stand up, use emotion and move as they speak. Students should focus on responding quickly,
without thinking, even if they just guess or can only give one-word, or grammatically incorrect, answers.
This training is essential to building your confidence for real conversations. If they need more time to
answer questions, just pause the lesson.

In addition to helping you practice listening and speaking, you’ll also test their understanding of what
they’ve learned, and know exactly what they need to go back and review. When they can answer each
question correctly, they will have mastered the month’s lesson set.

In larger classes, begin this lesson with everyone answering the questions together (teacher included),
much like a call-and-response song. This helps students feel less nervous so they begin building speaking
confidence faster. After answering questions together, try making new questions and having one student, or
group of students, ask questions to others. Keep it fun, casual, lively and LOUD!

This bonus PDF guide lists all of the key vocabulary in alphabetical order (by lesson) for easy review. If
students find anything else they don’t know while learning, please have them write it down here.

7 – The Bonus Conversation Builder Auduo Lesson

This bonus audio trains students to use longer and more interesting sentences, and to speak for longer
periods of time.

8 – The Bonus Natural Speech Audio Lesson

This bonus audio lesson teaches students how to think like a native speaker, and helps them choose the
right words at the right time in conversations, automatically.

The 10 bonus lesson sets include eight more Master English Conversation 2.0 lesson sets, and two
lesson sets from our original Master English Conversation program. Each is a popular lesson set
selected by our learners.
