A 2” metal medallion snowflake is hidden somewhere in Howard City, and

clues as to the medallion’s whereabouts are published weekly in The River
Valley. Treasure hunters may call 937-4740 or check the Village of Howard
City’s website, www.howardcity.org, to find out if the medallion has been
found.

Treasure hunters should abide by all public rules and laws, and should avoid
water or ice-covered areas. Digging and climbing are not necessary.

The lucky treasure hunter who finds the medallion will win the prize package.
The winner should bring the medallion to the Montcalm County Panhandle
Area Chamber of Commerce’s office to verify the medallion’s authenticity.

The Treasure Hunt will end when the medallion is found or the conclusion
of Winterfest’s final day. We Have In Stock
Clue of the Week:
A word play on THE TABOO BUS

The Rules

1. Do not dig below the ground surface. However, snow may have to be brushed aside to reveal
the medallion.

Snowmobiles and Accessories

2. Be careful! The medallion is hidden so that climbing is not necessary. Stay away from ice and
water areas. (We did!)

What your eyes tell you about your health

STATE POINT MEDIA
Everyone knows the eyes are the win-
dows to the soul, but few people realize
they are also windows to your overall
health, allowing eye doctors to see signs
of chronic conditions.
The eyes are the only place doctors can
get a clear view of blood vessels, which
can be significantly altered by conditions
such as high cholesterol, high blood pres-
sure, heart disease and diabetes. In fact,
an eye exam can often prevent compli-
cations from conditions like diabetes, by
catching problems early.
With this in mind, families are being
encouraged to get annual comprehensive
eye exams.

What Eye Doctors See

What gives eye doctors the advan-
tage over other specialists? By examining
the cornea, retina, and the flow of blood
through vessels around the eye, eye doc-
tors can detect signs of health problems,
including blood vessel leakage, retinal
swelling and fatty deposits on the retina.
This early detection can help prevent
and treat many conditions. For this rea-
son, comprehensive eye exams by optom-
etrists and ophthalmologists are about
more than simply determining if you need
glasses. They’re a way to detect signs of
serious conditions, such as diabetes and
vascular diseases.

Drinking and Driving

• According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic accidents are the lead-
ing cause of death in ages six to 33. Drunk driving accounts for almost half of these deaths.
• Drunk driving accidents occur more frequently at night and on the weekends.
• Three in 10 Americans will be involved in a drunk driving accident at some point during their
lives.
• An average of one person is injured in a drunk driving accident every two minutes.

22 RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER • MONDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2010

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hill’s Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the time change, because more people are still on the road at sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their “preferred”
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe it’s not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these “preferred” shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethical
to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. You’re our customer, not your
insurance company’s. Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the finest repairs avail-
able regardless of DRP contracts.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/

Bach Flowers — The Amazing Healing Properties of Flowers

Edward Bach (1886-1936) was a Physician. In 1930, at the age of 43, he was frustrated with traditional medicine in
England, and he decided to search for a new healing technique. He spent the spring and summer discovering and preparing
flower remedies - which include no part of the plant but simply what Bach claimed to be the pattern of energy of the flower.
In the winter he treated patients free of charge.
Rather than being based on medical research, using the scientific method, Bach’s flower remedies were intuitively derived
and based on his perceived energetic connections to the plants. If he felt a negative emotion, he would hold his hand
over different plants, and if one alleviated the emotion, he would ascribe the power to heal that emotional problem to
that plant. He would then research that conclusion with patients to see if he was correct. He believed that early morning
sunlight passing through dew-drops on flower petals transferred the healing power of the flower onto the water, so he
would collect the dew drops from the plants. Later, he found that the amount of dew he could collect was not sufficient,
so he would suspend the flowers in spring water and allow the sun’s rays to pass through them. Today these remedies are
made by placing plant parts (usually the flowers) in alcohol, in the sunlight for two weeks, then straining off the solids and
using that tincture to make the remedies by diluting them with spring water.
Rather than recognizing the role of germ theory of disease, defective organs, genetic, and other known sources of
disease, Bach thought of illness as the result of “a contradiction between the purposes of the soul and the personality’s
point of view.” This internal war, according to Bach, leads to negative moods and energy blocking, which causes a lack of
“harmony,” thus leading to physical diseases.
Since his practices did not follow any scientific protocol, and his methods were not well understood, they were never
accepted by the established medical community. In his book “Heal Thyself” he wrote:
“Disease will never be cured or eradicated by present materialistic methods, for the simple reason that disease in its origin
is not material . . . Disease is in essence the result of conflict between the Soul and Mind and will
never be eradicated except by spiritual and mental effort.”
Although the mechanism of their action is not well understood, these remedies are highly effective
for mental / emotional difficulties like anxiety, depression, worry, mental chatter, and many more.
They are safe and can be taken with any other medicine. They have no side effects. They either help
with the problem or nothing happens.
These remedies will not fix an infected gall bladder, but they might help deal with the anger and
bitterness that is one of the underlying causes of gall bladder disease, thereby fixing it long before it
becomes a physical, pathologic disease.
So if you have resentment, anger, jealousy, worry, hate, or other “negative” emotions these Bach
Flower remedies may be helpful.
