Betty Hammond
Betty Hammond, 71, of Morley, formerly of
Howard City, passed away Dec. 19, 2010, at Spec-
trum Health Butterworth Campus.
She was born Oct. 23, 1939,
in Howard City, the daugh-
ter of Henry and Edna Miller.
During her working years she
worked many of them in the
factory industry. She loved
quilting, babysitting, talking
to people and loved her grand-
children. In 1957 she married
Delbert, who survives.
Also surviving are children, HAMMOND
Steve Hammond of Morley; Scott (April) Ham-
mond of Kentwood; Sherry (Marty) Sherburne of
Barryton; Christi (Tony) Batenburg of Rodney; and
Susan Hammond and Steve Taylor of Pierson; 23
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; her best
friend, Lady; and several nieces and nephews.
She is now in heaven with her parents and a

Time for everyone to pay
In the early years, as in later years, you need to
honor your parents by paying attention to their in-
structions and just do it rather than following your
rebellious instincts. Then, schooling arrives, with its
continuing demands, whereas, you may have incli-
nations to be inattentive or even disinterested. Your
chances for personal advancement languish if you
are unwilling to apply yourself to the lessons and
expand your mind’s understanding.
There’s a life-changing lesson here for American
youth – how can we Americans regain our former
position as a ‘sunrise power’ rather than a ‘sunset
power’ when our youth’s achievement in the class-
room ranks 25th internationally? How much blame
are the students? How much blame are the parents,
and how much blame are the teachers? I’m not wise
enough to know for certain, but I believe all have
fallen short of what’s necessary to significantly ad-
vance America is the world arena of competition for
knowledge.
But beyond this, did you ‘burn-out’ in high
school, or did you unsuccessfully withstand the
increased competition of college, or were you a
‘late-bloomer’ who excelled in college and achieved
advance degrees? But not withstanding all of this,
each person has a vital role in life to be the best he
or she can be. The obligation is yours; you cannot

Be more efficient in the kitchen

Whether you’re making big meals
for entertaining or simple family din-
ners, how well your kitchen is set up
can mean the difference between extra
hours slaving away or time enjoying
the fruits of your labor.
A few simple tips can transform
a cluttered kitchen into an efficient
space for cooking and entertaining.
Plus, you can save money, time, en-
ergy and water in the process.
Simple Changes
Small additions can make your
culinary life easier. Consider painting
a strip of chalkboard paint on your
kitchen wall so family members can
maintain to-do lists, share notes and
recipes. This helps you stay organized
while adding an interactive element to
your décor. Also consider add-
ing roll-out cabinet shelves to make
storing and finding pots and pans
easier.
It is no surprise that the kitchen fau-
cet can be turned on and off anywhere
from 30 to 50 times a day by a family
of four. Install a touch faucet, such as

also eco-friendly and can help you con-
serve water. Look for one with a Multi-
Flow wand that can toggle between
spray and stream functionality. The
function adds convenience because
a simple push can increase the flow
from 1.5 gallons per minute for tasks
like hand washing, to 2.2 gallons per
minute when more water is needed to
fill pots and vases.
“Homeowners are concerned about
saving water, especially in areas where
water is scarce,” says Kurt Backlund,

“Yet some tasks require a higher flow
for speed and convenience. Choose
a faucet that offers the option to in-
crease flow when needed while saving
water the rest of the time.”
Street Smarts
Think like a short-order cook to
run your kitchen when things become
hectic. Keep a magnetic pad on the
fridge and tell family members to jot
down items that run out. This way,
your grocery list is always up-to-date
and you save money and time at the
supermarket by avoiding buying items
you don’t need.
Another trick is to clean as you
go. While piling dishes in the sink is
convenient in the short term, washing
them as you go and cleaning counter-
tops as food cooks makes after-dinner
cleaning easier.

Helping your kids make better media choices

Today’s kids are bombard-
ed with multimedia messages
— both positive and negative
— and the wide and expanding
variety of entertainment media
can have a real impact on the
physical and mental health of
children.
How can parents help chil-
dren navigate this new terrain to
make wise media choices?
“A decade ago, most children
and adolescents spent about
three hours a day watching tele-
vision. Today, kids are spending
more than seven hours per day
on entertainment media, which
includes televisions, comput-
ers, phones and other electronic
devices,” says Dr. Victor Stras-
burger, a member of the Council
on Communications and Media
at the American Academy of Pe-
diatrics (AAP).
Choose Media
Wisely
To help kids make wise media
choices, parents should monitor
what their children watch. Par-
ents can make use of established
rating systems to avoid inappro-
priate content, such as violence,
explicit sexual content or glori-
fied tobacco and alcohol use.
Stick to educational, non-
violent content. And by watch-
ing TV with your child you can
put any questionable content
into context and let it serve as a
springboard for family discus-
sions.
Parents should also make

sure their home’s media room
includes non-electronic media
formats like books, magazines
and newspapers, as well as
board games. Regular trips to
the library with your children to
help them select books can also
encourage positive media con-
sumption.
Limit Screen
Time and Zones
The AAP recommends par-
ents establish “screen-free”
zones at home by making sure
there is no TV, video games or
computer in children’s bed-
rooms. And they strongly rec-
ommend no TV during dinner.
Parents can also limit screen
time by creating a weekly sched-
ule of shows each family member
wants to watch, or by providing
alternatives, such as reading, af-
ter-school sports, hobbies, fam-
ily activities and outdoor play.
This is especially important dur-
ing vulnerable times, like when
kids get home from school.
For children younger than 2
years, the AAP recommends no
TV at all. A child’s brain devel-
ops rapidly during those first
years, and children learn best by
interacting with people, not TV
screens.
Become Critics
“Studies have associated
high levels of media use with
problems in school, attention
difficulties, sleep and eating dis-
orders, and obesity,” says Dr.
Strasburger. “And the Internet
and cell phones have become
new platforms for illicit and
risky behaviors.”
In order to combat negative
repercussions of such media ex-
posure, parents should encour-
age children to be media critics.
Ask kids questions about the
attitudes and behaviors of char-
acters in TV shows, movies and
books, as well as the meaning
and connotation of music lyrics,
to get them thinking more criti-
cally about media and their own
behavior.
Also, explain to children how
commercials persuade people to
buy items they may not neces-
sarily need or which may not al-
ways be good for them. Consider
using a DVR to minimize expo-
sure to advertising by pre-re-
cording shows and fast forward-
ing through some commercials.

Tips For Retiring In An Uncertain Economy

With the dust finally settling around
the nation’s economic crisis, baby boom-
ers are taking stock to see if their retire-
ment plans need revising.
There are many ways to adjust to to-
day’s economic uncertainty: from work-
ing longer to changing investment strate-
gies or living situations.
The shocking news for many is that
some of their safety nets may no longer
be viable.
Declining real estate values mean
many can’t turn to homes for money. Tu-
mult in financial markets resulted in de-
clines in 401K plans. And some experts
say Social Security may not be there when
needed most by the baby boom genera-
tion.
For the second consecutive year, So-
cial Security benefits didn’t rise, some-
thing which hasn’t happened in over 75
years. What’s worse is, beginning in 2016,
payroll tax revenue will be insufficient to
pay full Social Security benefits, accord-
ing to Allen W. Smith, a retired econom-
ics professor and author of the new book,
“The Looting of Social Security.”
“A pledge in the 1980s to only spend
Social Security funds on benefits was bro-
ken by every presidential administration
since. Money earmarked for seniors was
diverted into the government’s general
fund and used for whatever politicians
chose to spend it on,” says Smith, whose
high school textbook on economics was
used by 600 schools nationwide.
“Approximately $2.6 trillion of Social
Security revenue that was supposed to be
saved and invested for paying benefits to
baby boomers, was instead spent for other
things and replaced with non-marketable
government IOUs,” he stresses. Accord-
ing to Smith, these IOUs represent only a
claim against future government revenue.

on the job longer. Many who are physi-
cally able to work longer are postpon-
ing retirement until the future becomes
clearer, because they know that once they
retire, they may be unable to re-enter the
workforce given today’s high unemploy-
ment.
New Priorities
Many are shifting investment plans to
ensure the money they need within five
years of retirement is safe in low-risk in-
vestments, like fixed-income funds. This
can help them endure short-term market
drops while the money they need later
grows in more aggressive investments.
Belt Tightening
Many who are approaching retirement
age are cutting back on spending and put-
ting more into savings, in case their So-
cial Security benefits get cut. Practicing
austerity, and wisely investing the money
that is saved, is one of the most viable op-
tions for seniors.
With Social Security benefits account-
ing for nearly 40 percent of average in-
come for retirees over 65, Smith is advis-
ing seniors to exercise caution in their
financial decisions. Purchases that can be
delayed probably should be delayed, and
for those still in good health, working a
little longer than planned could make a
big difference in quality of life when they

Solo & Ensemble Festival was held at Reeths Puffer Intermediate School.
Tri County Seventh and Eighth Grade Bands entered 28 students in 22
events. Performances are judged in the areas of tone quality, intonation,
rhythm, technique, and interpretation.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

Bach Flowers — The Amazing Healing Properties of Flowers

Edward Bach (1886-1936) was a Physician. In 1930, at the age of 43, he was frustrated with traditional medicine in
England, and he decided to search for a new healing technique. He spent the spring and summer discovering and preparing
flower remedies - which include no part of the plant but simply what Bach claimed to be the pattern of energy of the flower.
In the winter he treated patients free of charge.
Rather than being based on medical research, using the scientific method, Bach’s flower remedies were intuitively derived
and based on his perceived energetic connections to the plants. If he felt a negative emotion, he would hold his hand
over different plants, and if one alleviated the emotion, he would ascribe the power to heal that emotional problem to
that plant. He would then research that conclusion with patients to see if he was correct. He believed that early morning
sunlight passing through dew-drops on flower petals transferred the healing power of the flower onto the water, so he
would collect the dew drops from the plants. Later, he found that the amount of dew he could collect was not sufficient,
so he would suspend the flowers in spring water and allow the sun’s rays to pass through them. Today these remedies are
made by placing plant parts (usually the flowers) in alcohol, in the sunlight for two weeks, then straining off the solids and
using that tincture to make the remedies by diluting them with spring water.
Rather than recognizing the role of germ theory of disease, defective organs, genetic, and other known sources of
disease, Bach thought of illness as the result of “a contradiction between the purposes of the soul and the personality’s
point of view.” This internal war, according to Bach, leads to negative moods and energy blocking, which causes a lack of
“harmony,” thus leading to physical diseases.
Since his practices did not follow any scientific protocol, and his methods were not well understood, they were never
accepted by the established medical community. In his book “Heal Thyself” he wrote:
“Disease will never be cured or eradicated by present materialistic methods, for the simple reason that disease in its origin
is not material . . . Disease is in essence the result of conflict between the Soul and Mind and will
never be eradicated except by spiritual and mental effort.”
Although the mechanism of their action is not well understood, these remedies are highly effective
for mental / emotional difficulties like anxiety, depression, worry, mental chatter, and many more.
They are safe and can be taken with any other medicine. They have no side effects. They either help
with the problem or nothing happens.
These remedies will not fix an infected gall bladder, but they might help deal with the anger and
bitterness that is one of the underlying causes of gall bladder disease, thereby fixing it long before it
becomes a physical, pathologic disease.
So if you have resentment, anger, jealousy, worry, hate, or other “negative” emotions these Bach
Flower remedies may be helpful.
