Title: All Around the Buttercup Grade Level: 2

Source: Singing Classroom

Materials needed: N/A

Procedure:

A.S: Does anyone here like to make new friends? Well, today we are going to sing a song about
friendship.

1. Introduce the song, start by singing it all the way through for the kids to hear.
All around the buttercup, buttercup, buttercup,
All around the buttercup, one, two, three
If you want to make a friend
Just choose me
2. Tell students to “repeat after me” line by line so that they can learn the song
3. Then have the students repeat 2 lines at a time
4. Sing the whole song together until everyone has learned it (maybe 2 times)
5. Have the students stand up in the circle, holding hands, and taking about 2 steps back to
make room in the circle
6. Teachers demo the activity for the students (one person weaves through the circle)
7. While everyone is singing together, one student will weave through each person in the
circle
8. When the song ends on “just choose me,” the person they are standing in front of will be
the new weaver
9. If time allows, students may play again, but this time the student who is “it” joins hands
with the person they stand next to, and they weave in and out of the circle together. Each
time the song stops, a new person is added to the line.
Closure:
Have the students sit back down in a circle. Using a raised hand, have students tell you their
favorite part of the song/activity. Did anyone make a new friend today?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned how to memorize
different parts of the song, recognizing repetition. Students will have practiced variations of pitch
and familiarized with ¼ rest beats. The students will also be working on spatial awareness and
staying in their own personal space while working closely with their peers.
