Lesson title: Adding with Fractions

Subject/Unit: Fractions.

Common Core Standards: Understand how to solve fractions. Describe how to by using the
butterfly method.

Purpose: To give an introduction to adding and subtracting fractions.

Behavioral Objectives:
● Students will work on a double-sided worksheet.
● Students will work with their group to try and solve a problem.
● Students will watch some math “magic” tricks.
● Students will receive their treats after lesson as a End-of-the-Year gift.

Time: About 30-50 minutes.

Materials needed:
● Projector.
● A partner who knows how to do math “magic” (in this case, Alec Arevalo).
● 30 fraction worksheets.
● Lesson plan.
● Pen/Pencil.
● Candy.

Anticipatory Set: The students will receive a worksheet and work to solve the front page and
then take a break by watching Alec Arevalo give some math “magic” tricks and explain how it
can happen.

Instructional Content:
1. Handout fraction worksheets to every student and keep one for yourself.
2. Ask students how they feel about fractions. Whether or not they like it, state that the
lesson is on fractions.
3. Tell the students to look at the 1st problem and ask if anyone knows how to solve it.
4. When a child explains (or if no one knows), go onto showing how to solve #1 in front of
the class.
5. If they need help, continue. If not, tell the class to work on the (AND ONLY) the front
page.

Competency 6.15- Prepare and present a developmentally appropriate lesson at the field site.
6. Once everyone is done, introduce you magic math helper and have him/her do a couple
tricks.
7. Have the magic (wo)man to explain how 1 or two of the tricks work. (once done thank
him/her and have the students thank him/her).
8. As that is to appeal to the students, tell the children to flip their paper.
9. Have the children look at the 1st problem (this should be harder for them). Have the
group of students come up with ideas on how to solve the problem.
10. After a while, ask students what they’ve come up by groups.
11. Solve the problem as a class (and a couple more when necessary).
12. Have the students finish at least half of the sheet and then start closure.

Closure:
● Ask students to pass their paper up.
● Hope the students the best for their 4th grade.
● Hand out their treats and thank them.

Assessment:
● Ask students to write whether it was easy, okay, or hard on the bottom of their paper.

Filler Activity: Ask students what they are excited about next year!

● Keep watching the clock, this lesson is time sensitive!
● Make sure to pay attention to the students to ensure that they are on task.
