This text deals with the analysis and modeling of the processes and operations of the three key
components of the air transportation system: the airport, the air traffic control system (ATCS)
and the airline. The book presents detailed methods for the analysis and modeling of the capacity,
quality of service and economics of services offered to users by these three sectors. The bookÕs nine
chapters address airport system capacity, the capacity of the air traffic control system, the capacity
of an airline, the quality of service at airports, the quality of service in the ATCS, the quality of
service of airlines and the economics of the air transportation system. The book is designed for
upper-division and graduate students in the fields of air transportation planning and technology,
applied operations research and applied transportation economics. Specialists engaged in research
and consulting, policy analysis and airport operations will also find it a useful reference.

This book presents fundamental concepts and general approaches to ‘‘city logistics’’––the
process of fully optimizing urban logistics activities by considering the social, environmental, fi-
nancial and energy impacts of urban goods movement. The focus of the work is the modeling of
urban freight systems in the context of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The book for-
mulates mathematical models of vehicle routing and scheduling with time windows, the optimal
location of logistics terminals and the various externalities associated with city logistics measures.
The authors illustrate their analytical approach with a case study of a new underground freight
transportation system in Tokyo, Japan. The book also addresses the potential benefits of ad-
vanced information technologies such as global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic in-
formation systems (GIS).
