INTRODUCTION:
IIM Raipur new campus is Situated in sector 30 of Naya Raipur. The administration moved to new campus
about 1.5 years back from the Old campus in Sejbahar. Naya Raipur is a planned city in the state of Chattisgarh. It has
around 40 planned sectors . It is a smart city with well connected BRTS facility commuting the residents to and fro
from Raipur city.
However IIM Raipur new campus hasn’t been connected with the BRTS network. Due to this the students
and Faculty are facing a lot of issues in commuting to city as and when required. The institute runs a bus on both
weekdays and weekends to cater the existing needs of students and faculty. However students also use their own
vehicles or book auto service on demand . Students also commute to sector 27 to take a BRTS Bus to the city. Right
now the Institute accommodates around 500 students and around 25 faculty and their family members. Students are
also facing some issues in commuting within the campus because some Hostels are located far away from the admin
block.
So this study is an attempt to bring out the commuting issues faced by students and faculty and possible
feasible solutions to address these issues.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
We wanted to find out the possible perceptions of students about the existing commuting issues both within
and outside the campus.

PROBLEM DEFINITION:
What are the possible reasons for Transportation issues on campus ?? and what are the possible solutions for it?

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
We have used Quantitative techniques to design our survey . Quantitative techniques emphasize objective
measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires,
and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. we have framed total of
14 questions which include a single screening question.

QUESTIONNAIRE AND THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND FRAMING IT:

Q1) Are you facing issues due to lack of transportation at IIM Raipur?

Options) a) Yes

b) No

This is our first screening question to know about the people who are genuinely facing issue with lack of
transportation issues at our campus. This is the most important part of the survey because it doesn’t make any sense
to solve the commuting issues if less population is interested in it. This question in a way drives the whole survey.

Q2) How often do you visit city (Magneto, Ambuja ,Telibandha) every month?

Options) a) 1 c)3 e)>4

b) 2 d)4

Page | 2
These are the most visited places by the students in Raipur city as per the Campus bus records available with the
institute security. So we tried to incorporate this question to find out the travel frequency of students and faculty for
our study purpose to find out the optimum number of times.

Q3) How often do you visit (Railway station/Airport) every month?

Options ) a)<=1 c) 3 e)>4

b)2 d) 4

Students and faculty travel to different outstation locations for either vacations , conferences or Corporate events or
for their home town . So they travel at odd times to catch the train or flight when the institute bus or autos may some
times be not available .This question allows us to know the actual frequency of visits to airport/ Railway station .

Q4) How often do you visit sector 27 every month?

Options) a)1 c)3 e)>4

b)2 d)4
Sector 27 is the most frequently visited place near to IIM campus, because it is the Shopping hub serving the needs
of students and faculty. However we still don’t have proper transportation facility till date for regular commuting
except the institute bus which runs only in specific timings . So this question will guide us in knowing the actual
travel frequency to sector 27.
Q5) What mode of transportation do you use to go to sector 27/ city?
Options) a)own vehicle c) College bus e) Ride sharing apps
b)Auto d) City transport
The motive behind this question is to find out the mostly used transportation channel , so that we can focus on that
channel and improve the service since sector 27 and city are the most used destinations compared to Railway station
and airport.
Q6) Amount of money spent monthly for transportation for commute to city / sector 27/Railway station/Airport
monthly ?
Options) a) <500 Rs c) 1000-1500 Rs
b) 500-1000 Rs d) 1500-2000 Rs e) >2000 Rs.
This question is framed to find out the total monthy personal expenses for transportation purpose in Commuting to
various places . this can give a rough estimate of the individual expenses per student so that , we can design a
solution keeping the expenses in mind.
Q7) Are you satisfied with the timings of Bus facility on Campus?
Options ) a) yes b) No
This question will give clear idea about the student satisfaction of existing bus timings and can help us drive the
survey to find out the optimum bus frequency per day.
Q8) Which among the following do you think is feasible transportation option for going to city / Sector 27?
Options) a)Having a permanent auto stand facility outside the campus main gate with affordable pricing.
b) Increasing the frequency of campus Buses
c) Having a BRTS Bus service by requesting Naya Raipur Development authority.
d) Introducing bike taxi service like Rapido.

Page | 3
e) Introducing bike rental like bounce.

This question gives the students perception about the most feasible solution for them as per their comfort for
commuting to city / sector 27 if these options are implemented.
Q9) Which among the following do you think is feasible transportation option for going to Railway station / Airport
?
Options) a) By hiring private auto service.
b) By Hiring on demand taxi service
c) By stretching the campus bus timings from early morning till late night.
d) Having a BRTS Bus service by requesting Naya Raipur Development authority.
This question gives the students perception about the most feasible solution for them as per their comfort for
commuting to Railway station / Airport if these options are implemented.

Q10) What is the amount you are likely to spend for Bike rental/ Bike sharing services if provided on campus per
month?
Options) a) <500 Rs c) 1000-1500 Rs
b) 500-1000 Rs d) 1500-2000 Rs
e) >2000 Rs
This question is aimed at finding out the possible spending behavior of the students if bike rental /Bike sharing
services are provided on campus . This question will guide us to to feasibility of implementation of Bike
sharing/Bike rental services on campus.
Q11) What do you think is the reasonable number of trips per day ,the campus bus can operate to city / sector 27
during weekdays ?
Options ) a) 1 c) 3
b) 2 d)>3
Q12) What do you think is the reasonable number of trips per day ,the campus bus can operate to city / sector 27
during weekends?
Options ) a) 2 c) 4
b) 3 d)>4
Both these questions 11 & 12 are framed to find out the actual requirements of frequency of trips as per their usuage
both during week days and weekends to city and sector 27. This will help us in reaching the optimum no.of.trips.
Q13) Are you interested in using shared bicycles based on docking system within the campus to commute to
Admin, Hostels , Sports complex and Main gate if College administration provides this facility?
Options) a) Yes b)No
This question is framed for gauging the interest of the students for introducing e-bicycles within the campus to help
them with reducing their commuting issues within the campus.
Q14) Any further suggestions for reducing the transportation issues within the campus?
Options) It is an open ended question aimed at finding out the possible opinions from the student community.

Q2). How often do you visit city (Ambuja, Magneto, Telibandha) every month?

Using the t-test, we tested the hypothesis that number of times people visit city is 3 or more than 3 considering the
95% confidence interval. According to the t-test results, we observe that p value is 0.417 > 0.05 . We can conclude
that the null hypothesis is not rejected, which implies that students visit city around 3 times a month

Q3) How often do you visit airport/railway station every month?

Using the t-test, we tested the hypothesis that number of times people visit railway station/airport is 1 or more than
1 considering the 95% confidence interval. According to the t-test results, we observe that p value is 0.001< 0.05
and t-value is 3.537, which is positive We can conclude that the null hypothesis is rejected, which implies that
students visit airport/railway station more than once a month.

Q4). How often do you visit sector 27 every month?

Using the t-test, we tested the hypothesis that number of times people visit sector 27 is 3 or more than 3 considering
the 95% confidence interval. According to the t-test results, we observe that p value is 0< 0.05 and t-value is 4.346,
which is positive We can conclude that the null hypothesis is rejected, which implies that students visit sector 27
more than 3 times a month, which is significantly high.

Q11) What do you think is the reasonable number of trips per day ,the campus bus can operate to city / sector 27
during weekdays ?

Using the t-test, we tested the hypothesis that reasonable number of trips of campus bus during weekdays is 2 or
more than 2 considering the 95% confidence interval. According to the t-test results, we observe that p value is 0<
0,05 and t-value is 9.660, which is positive. We can conclude that the null hypothesis is rejected, which implies
number of trips of campus bus during weekdays should be more than 2. Currently, there are only two buses
operating on weekdays and this has to be increased.

Q12) What do you think is the reasonable number of trips per day ,the campus bus can operate to city / sector 27
during weekends ?

Page | 7
Using the t-test, we tested the hypothesis that reasonable number of trips of campus bus during weekends is 1 or
more than 1 considering the 95% confidence interval. According to the t-test results, we observe that p value is 0<
0,05 and t-value is 18.671, which is positive. We can conclude that the null hypothesis is rejected, which implies
number of trips of campus bus during weekends should be more than 1. Currently, there is only 1 bus operating on
weekends, which is not sufficient to meet the demand of students. Thus college has to introduce more trips on
weekends.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

So in our study we found out respondents are not happy with the existing transportation facilities.
Majority of our respondents use college bus in commuting to sector 27/ city atleast 3 times a month. So as per our
study we found out people are spending around 500-1000 Rs a month exclusively for travel expenses and are willing
to spend the same amount if bike sharing/ bike rental services are introduced near our campus . We have also found
out that respondents are of opinion that BRTS Bust stop near IIM Campus can ease their travel woes to city and
provides them flexibility through out the week. They have also recommended to improve the campus bus frequency
from 2 trips to minimum 3 on weekdays and from 1 trip to minimum 2 on weekends along with change in the
existing bus timings to city/ sector 27.

We have also fund out that our respondents travel to Railway station/ airport more than once a
month and they are more convenient in hiring a private Auto. So we recommend having a permanent private auto
stand near our campus gate based on our analysis.

Finally to address the commuting woes of our studnets within the campus we recommend the
college administration to introduce Docking based bicycles at various locations like admin block, stadium, hostel
blocks and main gate to reduce physical stress on students.
