Participation
Where there is group work in a unit, it is expected that students manage their groups and group
tasks effectively. To do this, group members can take steps such as exchange contact details;
develop a learning contract; agree on how to share work; and agree on a time and place to meet
regularly. Groups should be proactive and take action if the group is experiencing difficulties. They
can do this by arranging to meet the staff member as soon as possible so that difficulties can be
resolved in a timely and productive manner.
Assessment tasks
Each group is required to provide a strategic systems analysis of a company. The group must
select a company which is listed in the MSC Malaysia Status Company Directory (URL:
https://www.mdec.my/directory/msc-malaysia-directory). However, the website is currently under
revamped. Therefore, please use the excel list (see: MDEC List (2017).xlsx) that is uploaded on
Moodle. This excel list was published on 14 January 2019 at data.gov.my (see: http://www.data.
gov.my/data/ms_MY/organization/malaysia-digital-economy-corporation-mdec)
10
MGW3381 Management information systems - Semester 1 (S1-01) - 2020
To perform a strategic systems analysis, each group is required to understand and analyse the
company by visiting the company, interviewing the employees, reviewing its company websites,
reports or other materials. In addition, the students should include issues drawn from the academic
and/or practitioners’ journals to support the analysis. These journals should be included in the
appendix. Tables and figures may be used in addition to the text. Written feedback will be provided.

Individual members of the group are required to write a report on two companies (see: Table 3)
and conduct two presentations (see: Tables 1 and 2). Written feedback for report will be provided.
Each group will be assigned two case studies in the first week of tutorial. It is a requirement that,
over the semester, every student must participate in two presentations. Each group is given 40
minutes to conduct a presentation. Questions and answers (Q&A) session takes about 10 minutes.
Verbal feedback will be given after the Q&A session. Marks will be deducted (under the category
of “Presentation Delivery”) for presentations which exceed the time limit. The aim of the
presentation is to develop a student’s ability to communicate intelligently on technical matters.
Students are encouraged to use visual support (e.g., Internet downloads, DVD materials,
demonstrations, handouts, photographs, maps, graphs, diagrams, apps etc) to add credibility to
the presentation. Students may create videos (Woolfitt, 2015) or adopt role playing, SlideRocket,
Keynote, Prezi, PowToon, Kahoot, Poll Everywhere, Padlet, Quizlet, Pebble Pad or others in the
group presentation. No PowerPoint slides are allowed. Presentations generating interest and
demonstrating clarity of expression will attract higher marks. The group presentations will take
place in the tutorial sessions. The presentations are scheduled as follows:

Individual student is required to write a report consisting of three sections namely, Section 1:
Introduction, Section 2: Analysis and Section 3: Discussion and Conclusion. Written feedback for
report will be provided.
Section 1: Introduction
Question 1: JD would not have become an e-commerce giant if Liu Qiangdong did not decide to
transfer his business online. What are these important aspects/facts that make the current JD?
Section 2: Analysis
Question 2.1: After 2004, JD has achieved a lot of progress. Check the strategies it has used.
What are JD’s competitive advantages and how does JD develop these competitive advantages?
Question 2.2: JD is now expanding in not only existing markets but also new markets. What has
JD done to exploit new markets for further development?
Question 2.3: Being the largest two in the market, competition is unavoidable. To compete with
Alibaba, what has JD done to fight for larger market share and attracting new consumers? In what
respects, do you think JD will finally take over Alibaba and become the largest player in the
market? If you think JD will not do so, also provide your rationales.
Question 3: Summarize JD’s main challenges and briefly discuss what the outcomes will be if JD
cannot overcome these challenges.

Our feedback to you
Your feedback to us
One of the formal ways students have to provide feedback on teaching and their learning
experience is through the Student Evaluation of Teaching and Units (SETU) survey. The feedback
is anonymous and provides the Faculty with evidence of aspects that students are satisfied with
and areas for improvement.
We improve this unit based on the student feedback. Below are the efforts made:
-Field trip is held to provide experiential learning.
-Tutorial presentations are held weekly to enhance student learning and experiences.

Disability Support Services also support students who are carers of a person who is aged and frail
or has a disability, medical condition or mental health condition.
Disability Support Services will assess each student and recommend reasonable adjustment to
teaching and assessment practices.
For within semester assessment activities, it is the students responsibility to provide confirmation
of their requirement for alternative arrangements to the Chief Examiner or appropriate faculty
contact person responsible for administering the arrangements no later than two week before the
assessment.
For mid semester tests being conducted at the Caulfield Racecourse, DSS provide the
adjustments (eg larger font) and instructions to Exams Branch.
