Do you think that Salem, Massachusetts during the 1600s and 1700s could maintain stable economic,

political and religious systems? Back in the 1600s the puritans were kicked out of England and they came to

Salem, Massachusetts and they established bay colony. The government that they had at that time was

theocratic government and it controlled the economy, politics and the religion. They controlled every other

aspect in the society.

Moreover, the government at that time was controlled by the puritans and they had theocratic way of ruling

which basically means that they rule with the name of god . They were very strict and they wanted everyone in

the society to follow the government orders and any deviation from the people would be faced by severe

punishment.

Additionally, as we said that the puritans who ruled and headed the government and they were very strict,

harsh and punitive. They had certain beliefs such as purifying the church. Also any deviation was faced by

severe punishment and they wanted to get rid of any satanic practices such as dancing, drinking, greetings,

giving gifts and celebrating in the Christmas and anyone who didn’t follow the rules was punished in harmful

ways as putting him in the stocks and putting a sign on him with the sin that he/she has done. Also they believed

in the unseen and the devil and they believed that the devil recruits witches and wizard and if they suspect that

you are a witch or wizard you will be hanged or imprisoned for instance the Salem witch trials. In those trials
150 were jailed and 20 were killed because they suspected that they were witches and wizards and they blamed

them for any hardships or problems that happened in the society.

Furthermore, at that time the town was gloomy and the people were poor and the houses were small and dark.

During the Salem witch trials greedy people used them to gain lands. In 1636 the first Salem trading ship sailed

to India. In 1649 Salem custom house was built and it is responsible for collecting taxes from the people.

To wrap this up, Salem during the 1600s and 1700s had a theocratic government which ruled with the name of

the god and they were very strict and they wanted the people to follow their ideas otherwise you will be

punished and they wanted to get rid of the satanic practices and to prevent any deviation in the society. They

had somehow unstable economic system in which people were poor and greedy people were in the society and

they used the trials to gain land and other possessions.
