The following slides will address and explain a variety of
on campus and digital resources to help you succeed at
Northwood.

Late Start Every Wednesday, school

Bell Schedule begins at 9:00 AM.

Tutorial Tutorial is every Tuesday and


Thursday. Tutorial is an opportunity to
meet with teachers, get help, and ask
questions. See slide 16 for more
information.

Advisement You will attend your


assigned advisement class every day
except Wednesdays. See slide 7 for more
information.

Zero Period is reserved for athletics and


band practice. Academic classes are not
offered during zero period.

Open Periods Many students have one


or two open periods. Students can have
an open period 1, 2, 7, 8 - or any
combination of those.
Odd/Even Calendar
Northwood High School utilizes
an odd/even bell schedule.
Students attend all odd-period
classes (1/3/5/7) on odd days and
even-period classes (2/4/6/8) on
even days.

Look at the calendar to see


whether an upcoming date is odd
(O) or even (E). For example,
Thursday, January 30, 2019 was
an odd day.

Advisement
What is Advisement?
Every student at NHS is assigned to an advisement period and teacher.
Advisement is an opportunity for students to regularly connect with their
Teacher Advisor (TA) and to hear about important information and events.
Students will have the same TA throughout their time at NHS, and they will
also meet with their TA for one-on-one fall and spring conferences.

When is Advisement?
Advisement is scheduled every day (except Wednesday) following the morning
break. Note that your Advisement class appears as a zero period on your class
schedule, but you do not attend Advisement at this time.

Who is my counselor and when do I see them?


Your counselor is assigned by TA; every student in your Advisement has the
same counselor. Your counselor will meet with you at specific times
throughout the year, but you can come and see your counselor any time!
Media Center / Library
When can I visit the Media Center?
The Media Center is open during Lunch, Open Periods (1,2,7,8) and Tutorials.
A pass from a teacher is required during to use the Media Center during periods
3,4,5,6.

What can I do in the Media Center?


Borrow a Laptop The Media Center has 36 laptops available for student
checkout.  Laptops may only be used in the Library.  Students must have a current
NHS Student Card to checkout a laptop.
Check Out Textbooks A current NHS student ID is required to check out all
textbooks and novels. New students may use a copy of their class schedule to
check out textbooks during the week .
Study!
Lockers / PE Clothes
LOCKERS
Lockers are available for PE use only. Please lock up all items!
Students can bring their own lock or they can purchase one from
the Student Activities Center (SAC - see slide 10 for more information).
Students do not need to bring their textbooks to school daily;
textbooks are available in classrooms for use during class time and
are available in the media center for use during breaks.
PE CLOTHES
NHS PE clothes may not be required depending on the course.
Please speak to your PE teacher directly before making any clothing
purchase.
PE clothes can be purchased from the SAC whenever the SAC is
open.
Student Store / SAC / ID CARDS
STUDENT STORE
HOURS The student store is open every regular school day during lunch.
LOCATION The student store is located near the oak tree, just behind the stairs.
ITEMS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE include various school supplies (pens, pencils, graph paper, etc), snacks
(like bagels, granola bars, dried fruit, yogurt) and drinks (chocolate milk, sparkling water, Gatorade)
FORMS OF PAYMENT ACCEPTED The student store is cash only, but most items cost less than $2.00, with
several snack options for $.25.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES CENTER (SAC)


HOURS The SAC is open at break, tutorial, and lunch, and closes at 2:15 PM daily.
LOCATION The SAC is located next to the cafeteria, across from the main office.
ITEMS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE include new or replacement student IDs, PE clothes, and locks for PE
lockers.
FORMS OF PAYMENT ACCEPTED Cash or checks made out to Northwood High School
ID CARDS FOR NEW STUDENTS are free of charge; visit the SAC on Wednesday morning from 8:30-9:00 AM.
REPLACEMENT ID CARDS can be reprinted during normal SAC hours. There is a fee for replacement cards.
WEBSTORE Additional items are available for purchase on the NHS Webstore, including AP exams,
planners, and NHS gear.
Lunch / Cafeteria
CAFETERIA HOURS The NHS Cafeteria is open before school,
during break, and at lunch.
PURCHASING A MEAL is easy! Students can pay with cash or
they can pay electronically.
FREE / REDUCED LUNCH

CAN I GO OFF CAMPUS FOR LUNCH?


PE clothes can be purchased from the Student Store, but are
not required.
INFORMATION including menus, payment methods, and the
Free and Reduced Lunch application, can be found on IUSD's
Nutrition Services website.

IUSD Student Login Information
ALL IUSD STUDENTS are provided with an account with access to all of the
different digital resources that IUSD supports. Student usernames and
passwords are created automatically upon enrollment.

USERNAME “Last 2 digits of your graduation year” + Last Name + First Name 


EXAMPLES  22DoeJohn, 19TroutMike
*Last Name or First Name cannot exceed 8 letters. If your first or last name is longer than 8 letters,
you will only use the first 8 letters. 

PASSWORD Your password is your 9 digit IUSD permanent student ID number. It is recommended
that students reset their password annually.
*To reset your password, log in to the IUSD Identity Website at https://identity.iusd.org/
Parent Portal (Aeries/MyIusd)
PARENT PORTAL allows students and
parents to view grades, transcripts,
attendance, classes, missing assignments,
teacher contact information, and grades.

Canvas
CANVAS is Irvine Unified's online
Course Management Solution (CMS). 
It is used for class announcements,
document storage, assignments, and
discussions. Students will use their
IUSD-issued username and password
to gain access to Canvas.

Google Apps for Education
Google Apps for Education (GAFE) offers students a free
suite of productivity tools (like Calendar, Drive, Docs,
Sheets, etc.) specifically designed for school use.

Follow these instructions to sign into your GAFE account:


1. Log into any NHS computer using your NHS username and password.
2. Open up a browser and type in www.google.com.
3. Click on the sign in button on the top right of the website.
4. When prompted, enter your username + "@iusd.org" (e.g.,
21BrownCharlie@iusd.org) and password (same as your NHS username and
password used to log onto an NHS computer).
5. Click on the ::: icon on the top right of the page.
6. A window with various tools will appear. Click on whichever tool you would
like to use.

NOTE that this is not a working email account. Please use your personal email
address whenever you are asked to provide one.
GradeSlam

GRADESLAM provides free tutoring support


to all NHS students. CLICK HERE to login. 

Trouble logging in? Students are required to use their


IUSD username when they launch GradeSlam via Canvas
and will be prompted to create a GradeSlam password.
Students will not be able to change their username or
enter a personal email address.

Naviance
NAVIANCE is a web-based service designed to help students,
parents, and their counselors with college and career
exploration.
Your Naviance portal also provides up-to-date information regarding college
admission and data that is specific to our school. NHS will also use Naviance to share
information about upcoming meetings, news, events, and web resources pertaining
to student college and career exploration.

How to log into Naviance:


1. Go to the www.northwoodhigh.org and click on the Naviance link under "Quick
Links."
2. Log in with your Northwood login information.
3. Go to the ABOUT ME tab in the upper right corner. Click on MY ACCOUNT.
4. Update your email address. This should be your personal email, not your IUSD
account - this is not a working email address!
