APPLICATIONS OF HEAT EXCHANGERS

Today, heat exchangers have been developed in forms so small they can fit in the palm of your
hand, and so large they require cranes and jumbo aircraft to move them. For example, the
largest plate and frame heat exchanger in the world stands 81 feet tall and weighs over 450 tons
(900,000 pounds). Heat exchangers are used in everything, from our laptops and refrigerators to
petrochemical refineries and food, drink, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The capture and re-
allocation of once-lost heat energy saves billions of dollars in expenses every year and makes
processes requiring high pressure feasible.

Heat exchangers are also widely used in industry both for cooling and heating large scale
industrial processes. Within the industrial sector, cooling tends to be the more prevalent
function in order to prevent equipment or volatile substances from overheating. Within
industrial plants and factories heat exchangers are required to keep machinery, chemicals,
water, gas, and other substances within a safe operating temperature. Heat exchangers may
also be used to capture and transfer steam or heat exhaust that is released as a byproduct of a
process or operation so that the steam or heat can be put to better use elsewhere, thereby
increasing efficiency and saving the plant money.

The type and size of heat exchanger used can be tailored to suit a process depending on the type
of fluid, its phase, temperature, density, viscosity, pressures, chemical composition and various
other thermodynamic properties. Heat exchangers are used in many industries, including:

 Waste water treatment

 Refrigeration
 Wine and beer making
 Petroleum refining
 nuclear power
In waste water treatment, heat exchangers play a vital role in maintaining optimal temperatures
within anaerobic digesters to promote the growth of microbes that remove pollutants. Common
types of heat exchangers used in this application are the double pipe heat exchanger as well as
the plate and frame heat exchanger.

Thermal treatments are a necessity when producing any beverage that will be bottled. Heat
exchangers increase production, reduce energy consumption and emissions, allow for less
operational water use and assist in wort recovery. While plate heat exchangers are typically used
in beer and cider production, it’s not unheard of for shell and tube heat exchangers to be used as
well.

Crude oil needs to be heated and brough to a certain temperature. Rising temperature of oil is
achieved by using HE. Also after refining of oil at high temperature, it needs to cool down to
normal temperature, which is again achieved by using HE.
The steam generators at a nuclear power plant are huge heat exchangers that separate the
radioactive water from the water that flows through the steam turbine.
