EXERCISES

1. What are the management functions that comprise the P-O-L-C framework? (20 points)

The management functions that comprises the P-O-L-C is planning, organizing, leading, and controlling,
these are highly integrated when carrying out into our day-to-day realities of running a certain
organization. P-O-L-C framework is the manager’s way to solve a problem in a creative way and also to
help managers to respond creatively the problem. Therefore, the effort to evaluate and appreciate a full,
straightforward justification for categorizing skills and activities that form the whole P-O-L-C system
should not be trapped in.

2. Are there any criticisms of this framework? (5 points)

It is important to realize that this is not without criticism. Specifically, these criticism arise from the fact
that the P-O-L-C frameworks might be ideal but may not adequately represent the real managers' day-
to-day behavior. However, the general assumption appears to be that management's P-O-L-C tasks
also offer a very helpful means of classifying the behaviors in which executives participate as they seek
to accomplish operational objectives.

3. What function does planning serve? (5 points)

Planning serve as a function in a way to find the vision & mission, strategizing and the goals and
objectives in an organization, because planning is a process in consisting of several steps. These steps
simply means that planners must aware of the critical facing their organization in terms of economic
conditions, their competitors, and their customers. Planners must then attempt to forecast future
conditions. They must also plan to establish objectives which they will be needed to achieve and when

will it happen. There are many different types of plans in planning, these are strategic planning, tactical
planning and operational planning.

4. What function does organizing serve? (5 points)

Organizing serve as a function that involves in developing an organizational structure and allocate human
resource to ensure the accomplishment of the objectives. The organization's structure is the framework through
which activities are organized. Generally the hierarchy is represented by a hierarchical map, which includes a
schematic illustration of the chain of command within an organization. Decisions taken on an organization's
structure are commonly referred to as decisions about organizational architecture. Organizing also involves the
design of individual jobs within the organization. Decisions must be taken on the roles and obligations of
specific employees, as well as how the roles will be done. Decisions taken about the nature of work within the
company are usually called decisions about "job design."

5. What function does leading serve? (5 points)

Leading serve as a function that it involves the social and informal sources of influence that you use to inspire
action taken by others. If managers are effective leaders, they would be excited about their subordinates
making efforts to achieve organizational objectives. The behavioral sciences have made many contributions to
the understanding of this management role. Personality analysis and work attitudinal studies provide useful
insight about how managers should direct subordinates most effectively. For example, this research shows us
that managers must first consider the personalities, beliefs, behaviors and emotions of their subordinates if they
are to become successful at leading.

6. What function does controlling serve? (5 points)

Controlling serve as a function that controlling involves ensuring the performance does not differ from the
standards. Controlling has three steps, first is establishing performance standards, second is comparing actual
performance against standards, and last taking corrective action when necessary. Quality expectations are
often expressed in monetary terms such as sales, costs, or income but it can also be expressed in other terms
such as units produced, amount of faulty goods, or quality or customer service rates. Depending on the
performance criteria, performance evaluation can be achieved in many forms, including financial statements,
revenue reports, output statistics, customer satisfaction, and structured performance evaluations. Managers at
all levels perform to some degree the management role of managing. Effective control allows plans to exist,
because planning provides the performance expectations or targets that are required. Controlling often needs a
good view of where liability for standard deviations resides. Budget audits and performance audits are two
typical management methods. While monitoring is often thought of in terms of financial requirements, managers
