Internet
A global computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using
standardized communication protocols.

Vs
Internet of Things?
The interconnection via the internet of computing devices
embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.

Machine-to-Machine (M2M)
• 1.1 billion smart phones
• 244 million smart meters
• 2.37 billion networked office devices
• 86 million medical devices
• 45 million connected automobiles
• 547 million connected appliances
• 105 million military devices
• 45 million SCADA systems
• …..

• Different types of “Things”:

– Macro devices e.g. PCs, laptops, Tablets
• Lot of processing and storage space
– Micro devices e.g. Smart phones etc
• Limited capabilities
– Tiny / nano devices e.g. sensors, wearable, smart watches
• Single board microcontrollers

The first IoT invention

• The first Internet “device”—an IP–enabled toaster
that could be turned on and off over the Internet—
was featured at an Internet conference in 1990

• Over the next several years, other “things” were IP–

enabled, including a soda machine at Carnegie
Mellon University in the US and a coffee pot in the
Trojan Room at the University of Cambridge in the
UK
