THE SAMIS AND THE BEAR

For the Sami people, the bear is an important part of their culture
and tradition. Ancestral ceremonies, rituals that mix religion,
respect and fortune when it comes to hunting this animal.
Its name in the Sami language: Isaivoi, means sacred. In ancient
times, the bear hunt took place during the months in which the
animal hibernated. Once their lair was located, a team of men
armed with spears, bow and arrows and axes was formed. One of
the men had the function of entering the den and waking the bear
(!). The bear had to be shot down by a brand new spear. The
correct and effective way to do this was to attract the animal and
wait for it with the lance slightly inclined and resting on the ground
by its non-sharpened end so that when the bear intended to
pounce on the person to which the bear attacked it would mortally
stick the pica.
