 TExES (Texas Examinations of Educator Standards) Competency onPPR (Pedagogy and

Professional Responsibilities) EC-12

Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this
knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive
to their developmental characteristics and needs.

The teacher needs to understand the developmental process in order to arrange lesson plans to
motivate students based on their characteristics and needs best for them to learn. Without
understanding and knowing this they will not be able plan lessons better suited for their students
abilities.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning
experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that
promote all students’ learning.

The teacher should already know they will get a variety of different students in the class room.
Not one student will learn the exact way. It is the teacher's responsibility to meet all the different
learning styles based on the students in the class room.

Competency 003:  The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent
instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

The teacher should always explain and give very understanding instructions on what to do and
what the lesson is about. Not all students comprehend the same way. When the instructions are
very clear for all the students to comprehend there will more class time to work on their
assignments.

Competency 004:  The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student
learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and
appropriate assessments.

The teacher should plan hands on and creative activities based on the different learning styles to
meet all the students needs, in the class room. Using all the 3 learning styles, in the lessons, is
important. Using hands on and creative lessons help engage the students in wanting to learn.

Competency 005:  The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning,
equity and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment
that is safe and productive.
The most important thing a teacher do is make their class room feel safe, physically and
mentally, and all students feel equally important. When a student feels safe in the classroom they
will learn better. It is the teacher’s responsibility to make sure the class room is a safe place for
all of the students.

Competency 006: The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive
learning environment and for managing student behavior.

Maintaining a class room structure is important in student learning. Having set rules and
organization makes learning easier for students and less behavior issues. Without organization
and structure your classroom will be chaos.

Competency 007: The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for
communicating effectively in varied teaching and learning contexts.

The teacher should be able to communicate in an understanding way for the student. Being able
to communicate with the students in a way for you and them to understand will help them be
successful. Being able to understand how your students communicate will help you help them
learn.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in
the learning process. 

The teacher needs to have clear instructions for all the students to understand. Using all the
learning styles in the lesson should be able to make it for all the students to understand. Not one
student learns the same way. 

Competency 009: The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize,
deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students.

The teacher should always use some technology in everyday classroom lesson. Technology is a
very big part of today's world, having technology in the lesson will help engage the student’s
attention to learn. Technology will also make your classroom fun, too.

Competency 010:  The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides


students with timely, high quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all
students.
It is important to keep a record of your students’ progress, and know if they are not
understanding something, Then you can try a different approach to help them better understand.
No child should be left behind for not understanding something.

 Competency 011:  The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s


education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

Having the students family involved with different learning activities throughout the school year
is important. Communicate with the student’s family and keeping them informed on the progress
of the student and what they are learning each week. Always send notes home on what ou are
doing in the classroom, weekly calender.

Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively


interacting with other members of the educational community and participating in various types
of professional activities.

To be a good teacher you need to work with other teachers and share ideas and communicate
with one another. The best teacher learns from one another and work together. Even teachers like
to have fun and participate in professional activities.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for
educators and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas. 

There are always laws and strict guidelines everywhere you go. Being a teacher, it is very
important you know those laws and guidelines. You must always follow them for the safety of
you and your students.
