Jagannath Temple

Jagannath Temple is located in the west from the pachali temple. It is also one of the largest
temple complexes in the Bagmati area. The Jagannath Mandir, is installed at (1792A.D.) was
donated by a wealthy merchant Bhaba Man Singh from Makhan Tole in Kathmandu. He was
well known devotee of the god Jagnnath and legend has it that he was inspired at Varanasi to
donate a temple to this deity. This temple is one of the most significant and unique structures to
be built during the early Shah period. It appears that it is used to compose a building of
traditional Newar architecture and north Indian Sikhara forms. The composition unites the
octagon and the square as the leading geometry for the ground plan and combines the sikhara
with the arcaded style, structural components and materials of the traditional Nepali multi-tiered
temple.

It has brick plinth in two levels. The brick sanctum is surrounded by an octagon passage with
twenty eight carved wooden pillars. There are twenty small windows and nineteen struts around
this roof. The struts depicted the different incarnation of Vishnu. Above the sanctum is a tall
narrowing brick pillars. At the base of the tower on all sides, are wooden latticed window
balconies. Inside these balconies, there are stone sculptures of Vishnu on all sides. The main
tower knot is slightly in the middle and ends with a cornice and a finial. A plastered bell-shaped
gajur which is episodic by two rings of lotus buds. A stone shaped Kalash over the dome
supports a gilded chakra. Below the cornice, there are stone sculptures if winged lions on all
sides.

The temple has four carved wooden doorways on all sides. It is facing east. Inside the
sanctum, there are black stone sculpture of Krishna, Subhadara and Balaram. The temple is made
of traditional Dacchi Appa with mud mortar and wood.

The courtyard of the temple is paved by Teliya tile. There is a stone sculpture of Garuda, the
vehicle of Vishnu, in front of the temple. Besides the Garuda, we see through possible belonging
to a water reservoir because there is a sculpture of Bhagirath on the southern façade towards the
road. Below the Garuda socle, there are stone sculptures of Tadhiju, Shivalaxmi and Nandal,
Bhava Singh, Bansana and Mahela with inscription 1792 A.D. Three Shiva linga one stone bull
and two trees of Bar and Pipal trees are in the north east corner. The east and south sides of the
temple are closed by brick wall. The temple is available only from eastern and southern gates.
Both gates have stone disc flanked by a pair of deer on the top. Between the two gates the statues
of Shiva, Parvati, Saraswoti and Hanuman are fixed in the boundary wall and two big stone lions
are kept in the eastern gate as Dwarpalas. Behind the western Sattal there is a shrine dedicated to
Narsingh with the idol of Goddess can be seen. The temple has sattals on its west and north.
Besides, there are sattals toward the road side in south, west and north. The sattals are made of
traditional Dachhi Appa with mud mortar and wood. There is a bell in north which has
inscription of 1889 A.D.
