Music Lesson Plan

Title: I Know a Washer Woman Grade Level: 2
Source: The Singing Classroom

Materials needed:
None

Procedure:

A.S: Are rhythm and beat the same thing? What kind of instruments can be
used to keep the beat of a song? What does the beat do for a song?

1. Begin by introducing the children to the chant (you can start by only going
through the first verse) :

I know a washer woman, she knows me

She invited me to tea.
Guess what we had for supper?
Slippery soap with butter.

I know a gardener and she knows me.

She invited me to tea.

Guess what we had for supper?

Dirt and water with butter.

I know a porcupine and she knows me.

She invited me to tea.

Guess what we had for supper?

Tree bark with butter.

2. Next, have the class join in the chant and find the beat. Slide your hands
together to create a “swish” sound to keep the beat.
3. Have the class continue to keep the beat of the chant, but this time the
teacher should clap the rhythm of the chant. The claps should line up with
each syllable being spoken.
4. Ask the class to listen for where the rhythm claps line up with the beat
claps. Repeat the chant until it is clear where the rhythm and beat line up.
The beat and rhythm line up for the line “She knows me/ she invited me to
tea”
5. Explain that the beat is the underlying pulse felt in most music, while
rhythm is a pattern of long and short sounds and silences.

Closure:
1. Split the class in two, and have half clap the beat and half clap the rhythm.
Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . .
