Subject : Terminology

Earthworks Terminology

A
 AS GRADED - is the extent of surface conditions on completion of grading.
B
 BEDROCK - is in-place solid rock.
 BENCH - is a relatively level step excavated into earth material on which fill is to be placed.
 BORROW SITE - An area (either within or outside the Site), other than cuttings and specified excavations,
from which material may be excavated for placing in embankments
 BORROW - is earth material acquired from an off-site location for use on grading on a site.
C
 CAPPING LAYER - A layer of graded rock material of sizes varying between 19 mm and 150 mm, placed
over rock fill as a transition layer between rock fill layers and the overlying earth fill layer(s) in an
embankment.
 CIVIL ENGINEER - is a professional engineer licensed to practice in the field of civil engineering.
 COMPACTION - is the densification of a fill by mechanical means.
 CUTTING - An earth or rock excavation within the Site that is made below an existing surface to create
the road formation.
D
 DESIGNED FLOOR LEVEL - The level of excavation in a cutting at the underside of the Selected Material
Zone.
 DRAINAGE LAYER - A layer located at the foundation of the formation in an embankment or a cutting,
constructed of free draining material with grading. The purpose of the layer is to provide a pathway for
the free drainage of excess water from the foundations of embankments or cuttings. The drainage layer is
usually wrapped in geotextile to prevent its contamination or blockage over time from adjacent fine
grained material.
E
 EARTH MATERIAL - is any rock, natural soil or fill or any combination thereof.
 EARTHWORK - moving and/or processing of massive quantities of soil or unformed rock. Earthwork is
done to reconfigure the topography of a site to achieve the design levels. Earthwork involves cutting and
filling to achieve the required topography.
 EMBANKMENT - An earth or rock fill structure above an existing and/or excavated surface to create the
road formation.
 EMBEDMENT - An insert, anchor bolt or other device attached at the form face so as to be encapsulated
by the concrete for future attachments or structural performance.
 EXCAVATION - is the mechanical removal of earth material.
F
 FILL - is a deposit of earth material placed by artificial means.
 FORMATION - The earthworks structure including all Foundation and Structural Treatments on which the
road pavement will be constructed.

G
 GRADE - is the vertical location of the ground surface.
 GRADE (EXISTING) - is the grade prior to grading.

Metrowide Homebuilders Inc.| Unit 2A New Pamplona Bldg. Alabang-Zapote Road, Las Pinas City
 GRADE (FINISH) - is the final grade of the site that conforms to the approved plan.
 GRADE (ROUGH) - is the stage at which the grade approximately conforms to the approved plan.
 GRADING - is any excavating or filling or combination thereof.
I
 INVERT -The lowest visible surface; the floor of a drain, sewer, tunnel, culvert, or channel.
P
 PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION - is the inspection required by this code be performed by the civil
engineer, geotechnical engineer or engineering geologist. Such inspections include that performed by
persons supervised by such engineers or geologists and shall be sufficient to form an opinion relating to
conduct of the work.
R
 RETAINING WALL - A wall, which is designed to resist horizontal loads such as those imposed by soil or
water.
S
 SITE - is any lot or parcel of land or contiguous combination thereof, under the same ownership, where
grading is performed or permitted.
 SLOPE - is an inclined ground surface the inclination of which is expressed as a ratio of vertical distance to
horizontal distance.
 SOIL - is naturally occurring superficial deposits overlying bedrock.
T
 TOPSOIL - Topsoil is natural surface soil that may contain organic matter.
