-1#8 Assessment

The teacher understands various formal and informal assessment strategies and
uses them to support the continuous development of all students.
1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your

knowledge and understanding of that standard--put the standard into your own words.

I believe that this standard refers to a teacher's use of assessment in the classroom. It

is important to have continuous assessment of students' progress. By informally and

formally assessing students, teachers can see what needs to be retaught and what concepts

students understand and can apply. Teachers can get a better understanding of where each

student is at and can find trends in the students learning and demonstrations of their

understanding. By noticing those trends, teachers can figure out the true struggles that

students have and address those special needs.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application

of the standard.

The artifact that I chose, the Talk Show project rubric, demonstrates my

understanding and application of the standard because it states the multiple ways that

students are being assessed on the project. Students need to be assessed on more than one

element in a project because each student has their own individual strengths. The Talk

Show rubric includes categories that involve elements of informal assessment that will

play a role in their final grade. It is important to informally assess a students progress on

a long term project to get a better idea of how long they will need to work on the parts. It

also allows teachers to monitor the progress and make sure they are all on the right track

and convey the understanding that the teacher was trying to elicit.

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will

change in the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect

upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

My teaching will be impacted by this assignment because I will have a better

understanding of how to construct a rubric. By creating this rubric, I also had a lot of time

to contemplate what should be assessed and how I will assess that knowledge. Creating a

long term project and figuring out what will be assessed will help me to create further

projects and rubrics. If I teach eighth grade ecology in the future, I can use this project. I

may use this project as a template for other projects in different grade levels.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn

in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

I am more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of

satisfactorily meeting the standard because this standard has made me evaluate what to

assess students on and how to modify assessment for different students. While I only

created one rubric for the Talk Show project, I understand that certain students will need

to be assessed in different ways. The rubric assesses different elements of the project to

allow all students to demonstrate their strengths. I understand that you should not just

evaluate one element of a project because not all students shine in the same way.
