• A wrought iron bar 30 cm

long and 2 cm in diameter is
bent into a circular shape as
shown in fig. It is then wound
with 600 turns of the wire.

• Calculate the current

required to produce a flux of
0.5 mWb in the magnetic
circuit in the following cases

• I. No air gap, ur (Iron) = 4000

(assumed constant)

• II. With air gap of 1mm,

ur (Iron) = 4000 (assumed
constant)
H in AT/m 2500 3000 3500 4000
• III. With an air gap of 1mm,
assume the following data for B in T 1.55 1.59 1.6 1.615
magnetization of iron

• A cast steel structure is made of a rod of square section 2.5

cm X 2.5 cm as shown in fig.

• What is the current that should be passes in a 500 turn coil

on the left limb so that a flux of 2.5 mWb is made to pass in
the right limb.
• This is a parallel magnetic circuit
• Assume permeability as 750 and neglect leakage. • Let S1 = Reluctance of centre limb
• S2= Reluctance of right side

𝑙2
𝑆2 = = 679 AT/wb
𝜇 𝑜 𝜇 𝑟 𝑎2

𝑙1
𝑆1 = = 424 AT/Wb
𝜇 𝑜 𝜇 𝑟 𝑎1

Reluctance of left limb = S2= 679 AT/Wb

For parallel branches, mmf remains same

• 1S1 = 2S2
• 2 = 2.5 mWb

• 1 = 4 mWb

•  = 1+ 2 = 6.5 mWb

• Total mmf = NI = reluctance of left limb *  + S1 * 1

• 500 * I = 679 * 6.5 m + 424 * 4m

I = 12.223 A
