(Summary)

Primary sources provide a window into the past—unfiltered access to the record
of artistic, social, scientific and political thought and achievement during the
specific period under study, produced by people who lived during that period. It's
more useful to consider the degree to which a  Primary source is reliable for a
given purpose.

First Voyage Around The World by Magellan by Antonio Pigafetta

In Pigafetta’s account, their fleet reached “Islands of the Thieves.” (Ladrones

Island) and is presently known as the Marianas Islands. Pigafetta reported that
they have reacjed the island of Samar after Ladrones. On March 18, men came to
them and realized that the men were reasonable so welcomed them with foods
and gifts.
The fleet went to Homonhon island or “Watering Place of Good Signs.”( beacuse
this is the first place that they found the first signs of gold in the island) and they
named the island St. Lazarus.

Pigafetta stated that they saw two long boat full of people (balangay) in Mazzava.
The leader whom he referred to the king became close with Magell. Days after,
The King Introduced Magellan to his siblings who were also kings of different
island. The first Mass in the Philippines happened and the cross would be famed
Magellan’s Cross which is still preserved at present day. This was the same cross
which Magellan explained to the kings as a sign of his emperor who ordered him
to plan it in the places were he would reach and further explained that once
other Spaniards saw this cross, then they would know that they had been in this
island and would not cause them troubles.

Magellan and his men reached the port of Cebu with Raja Colambu. The next
day, Magellan’s men and the king of Cebu met in an open space. There the king
offered a bit of his blood and demanded that Magellan do the same. The king of
Cebu was then baptized as a Christian. After 8 days, all of the island’s inhabitant
were already baptized.

The principal man of Mactan went to Magellan and asked him for a boat full of
men so that he would be able to fight the chief name Lapu-Lapu who is said was
a thief. They went and fight, approximately 1,500 natives and Magellan died in
the battle. The king offered money to give back the dead body of Magellan but
Lapu-Lapu refused. With Magellan’s death his men elected Duarte Barbosa as
the new captian. Pigafetta also accounted how Magellan’s slave and interpreter
named Henry betrayed them and told the king of Cebu that they intended to
leave as soon as possible. Henry and the king of Cebu conspired and betrayed
what was left of Magellan’s men. The king invited these men to a gathering where
he said he would present the jewels that he would send for the King of Spain.
Pigafetta was left on board the ship and was not able to join the 24 men who
went to the gathering because he was nursing his battle wounds. – The natives
had slain all the men except the interpreter and Juan Serrano who shouted at
the men on this ship to pay ransom so that he would be spared but he was left
on the island for they refused to go back to shore.

The number of materials about the time period diminishes. The only artifacts in
our own backyard that have shed light on precolonial Philippines are jars,
human remains, and epics preserved by oral history so is Pigaffeta’s chronicles.

Pigaffeta’s Chronicle is one of the most cited documents by historians who

wished to study the pre colonial Philippine and the earliest written
accounts.Pigaffetta was seen as a credible source for a period, which was prior
unchronicled and undocumented. It is the earliest detailed documentation. It was
believed that Pigafetta’s writing s account fot the “purest” precolonial
society.Pigaffetta regarded the indigenous belief systems and way of life as
inferior to Christianity and of the Europeans.
He always remarks on the nakedness of the natives or how he was fascinated by
their exotic culture. The number of materials about the time period diminishes.
The only artifacts in our own backyard that have shed light on precolonial
Philippines are jars, human remains, and epics preserved by oral history so is
Pigaffeta’s chronicles. It’s manuscripts are detailed and indeed a credible source
at those time.

Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan.

It came to be known by its KKK initials or by its shortened name Katipunan. Its
principal aim was to win Philippine independence from Spain by means of armed
revolution. The Katipunan organization was largely patterned after that of La Liga
Filipina of which Bonifacio had been a leading member. The highest body of the
Katipunan was the Supreme Council (Kataastaasang Sanggunian). Each province
was to have a provincial council (Sangguniang Bayan) whileeach town was to be
under a municipal council or Sangguniang Barangay. The leading light in the
Katipunan movement was the young Emilio Jacinto. Known as the “Brain of the
Katipunan.” Jacinto was the right-hand man of Bonifacio. He wrote many of the
Katipunan documents, including the famous Kartilya, a word adopted from the
Spanish cartilla which at that time meant a primer for grade school student.

Katipunan was not just an organization working towards the freedom of the
Filipinos. They built on the ideological and political foundation constructed by
men and women who sacrificed themselves because of their love for the country
and for the people.
The organization drew inspiration from Dr. Jose Rizal, whose literary works,
particularly Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, exposed the cruelties of the
Spanish colonisers. Before Katipunan was established, both Bonifacio and Rizal
were part of ‘La Liga Filipina’ – a progressive organization initiated by Rizal that
sought peaceful reforms.

Just like Rizal who pushed Filipinos to think critically with full understanding,
this code of conduct was made to inform people of what they deserve to know for
making their lives better.

Going back to the past, the journey to freedom is long and hard. The price of
bravery and principle is high. Back then, they thought that the day of real
freedom will forever remain a dream. And through Kartilya ng Katipunan,
Filipinos were united to fight for what they own. Kartilya ng Katipunan became
an oath the every Katipuneros must follow to show their determination in being a
part of the people who wanted a change.

First Voyage Around The world, KKK and Kartilya ng Katipunan are some
primary sorces that we need to analyze because it give us an overview on what
our history looks.
