How to use
this guide

What these things mean:

I recommend the one thing that you must get and is necessary in
MUST GET order to create videos using your iPhone. I highlight it using this tag.

I give you alternatives or upgrades because, well, you might be more

advanced or might need something else for the type of video you
want to capture.

recommend anything I do not use myself.

Microphones - for iPhone 6s or earlier

Rode SmartLav MUST GET
The Rode SmartLav plugs directly into your iPhone’s
headphone jack and just works. There are no on or
off buttons. It’s just plug and play! Remember to get
the extension cable if you plan to film from a
distance.

Alternatives
Less expensive lavalier mic
If you want to get a lavalier mic but don’t want to spend too much,
these will do just fine.

Filming more than one person or with a musical instrument?

You can use a shot gun mic so that you get all the ambient sound. The
VideoMicro is small enough to be on your smartphone. To use this, you
aslo need to get the adapter (since this mic is made for DSLRs) so you
can plug it into your phone.

- Rode SC 4 Smartphone adapter

Need a wireless set up?

This wireless system has the best sound by far and works from a fairly large
distance. Remembre to get the adapter so you an use it with your iPhone.

Microphones - for iPhone 7, 8 and X

If you don’t want to use an adapter to use the traditional headphone jack mics, you can get
these mics that plug directly into the lightning port of of the phones.

Shure MV 88
This microphone is compact and works really well if
you are going to be within 5 feet of your iPhone. It is
plug and play and doesn’t require batteries.

Alternatives

This mic is a great all around wireless mic. You can use the
lavalier system or connect a physical mic. It comes with a
lightning cable to connect directly to the lightning port. It
is a bit of an investment but will fit versatile needs.

TRIPODS, MOUNTS, & STABILIZERS

Joby Gorrillapod Mobile Rig MUST GET

The Joby Gorrillapod Mobile Rig is a great tripod

to carry around. It comes with additional arm
attachments that lets you attach LED lights, mics,
and anything else you can attach to a cold shoe.
The phone holder can be rotated to capture
vertical video and can be detached and used on a
larger tripod. This is a really great versatile tripod
to have.

Alternatives
If you plan to fully accessorize your phone, consider getting the
Beast Grip Universal Lens Adapter and Rig System. With this rig
you can attach various lenses, lights, mics and anything else you
can think of attaching.

If you want to get a full tripod, a basic one will do since it’s not
going to carry a lot of weight. You will still need the Gripit tripod
mount to go along with this.

- Ulanzi Smartphone Tripod Adapter

If you plan on capturing a lot of footage on the go like I do, you might
want to think about investing in a stabilizer so that you capture
smoother footage. This second iteration of the Osmo Mobile lets you
record vertical video.

LIGHTING
Natural Light - FREE! :) MUST GET
If you are able to situate yourself by a large
window and use natural light, that is often good
enough. If you are outdoors, shoot in the shade so
that there are no harsh shadows on you or your
subject.

Alternatives
Portable lights

This light is a great addition to your mobile toolkit. It is bright enough

to light your subject in dark environments or to be used as fill light
during the day to remove shadows. The added bonus of getting these
is that it has 3 cold shoe mounts so you can add on another light or a
microphone.

Higher end:
If you want to go with the most popular tried and tested lighting, you
should go with the Diva Ring Light. This is a favorite of all the famous
YouTubers.

OTHER GEAR
Jackery Bolt External Battery Charger MUST GET

You most likely already have a charger, but just in case

you don’t, definitely get one! It doesn’t really matter
which one as long as it can charger your iPhone when
you’re out and about filming. Unlike taking photos,
recording video on your phone can really drain your
battery. Make sure to keep it charged!

Extras
Low on storage?
You can easily offload your photos and footage by using
an external flash drive. The Sandisk is one of the most
widely used with the iPhone, and many of the popular
apps are compatible with this drive. Comes in 32 64, 128
GB.
Sandisk iXpand Flash Drive

Want to change perspective?

Sometimes it’s fun to change perspective and get a little
more zoom so that less of your background is included.
Or, if in tight quarters and trying to film yourself and
another person, the wide lens comes in handy in this 2-
in-1 lens kit by Olloclip.

Applications
Capturing footage has never been easier. Below, I give you options for the
most basic and easiest to use, to the more professional apps that have been
used to film a full feature film!

APPS FOR FILMING

iPhone Camera MUST GET

I can honestly say that 95% of the time I film, I am using the
native camera application that comes with the iPhone. It is
very simple to use and you are already very familiar with it.

Filmic Pro MUST GET - FOR EXPERIENCED FILMMAKERS

If you are comfortable with and understand things such as exposure

and focus lock, then I highly recommend using Filmic. You’ll have so
much control over your iPhone, it’s unbelievable. This app was used to
film a Sundance award winning feature film.

Alternatives
Hyperlapse
Want to create smooth (non-shaky) footage?
If you walk around a lot capturing footage but don’t want to get a stabilizer,
you can use Hyperlapse to get more stable footage. Just make sure to save
your Hyperlapse to 1x (instead of the default 6x) so that you don’t
accidentally have a timelapse on your hands.

APPS FOR EDITING

iMovie MUST GET FOR BEGINNERS

iMovie has come a long way. I initially did not recommend this app but
this is the app that I teach in my iPhone Videography class for those
that are new to editing. You can do a fair amount with this app such as
layer on videos over videos and as well as layers of music and audio.

Lumafusion MUST GET - FOR EXPERIENCED EDITORS

Lumafusion is the app that I now use for all of my editing on my iPhone.
It has allowed me to do almost all of my editing on my iPhone. For
those looking for an app that lets you add multiple layers of video,
audio, add and control transitions, add and animate titles, save in
multiple sizes of video, precisely control timeline, this is THE app to use
on the iPhone. it is pricey though but definitely worthwhile.

Alternatives

VideoLeap
VideoLeap is a great app for adding effects to your videos. Get
creative with your video by adding filters, animation, blurs, and other
effects.

Splice
If you don’t mind mind an app doing it all for you, use Splice for quick
edits. Upload your cliips and let Splice add its own music and
transitions.

EDITING

WORKFLOW
When editing, one of the most important things you can do is to follow a workflow. By following
a workflow, you minimize a lot of rework and re-adjusting.
