Memo To: Nassau County Math League Coaches

From: Your New Question Author

I tried to create an interesting set of problems covering a wide range of middle school
math topics and common math contest themes. The format is the same as it has
been in previous years. Each contest is thirty minutes long with six questions
divided into two groups: one with and one without the use of a calculator. There are
however, a few small changes.

In order to facilitate teachers going over the contest problems after a contest, some
problems will follow a similar theme between grade levels. Between grades 7 and 8,
and between grades 8 and 9, there will be problems that are almost identical with
the older group being given a slightly harder version. Students should be
encouraged to try to understand the solution to all of the problems that they miss.
Themes from particular problems may be repeated on future contests, however you
will not see specific notes to that affect on individual contests.

The typesetting is also a little different with more detailed solutions being provided.
Teachers may choose to make copies of the contest solutions and distribute these to
students at club meetings after a contest is given. The questions for this year were
produced using a free application called Open Office which includes an MS Word
compatible word processor and a high quality equation editor.

I hope you enjoy the problems and I hope your students are encouraged to keep
sharpening their mathematical skills.
