Needs assessment and goal selection

1. Self-assessment. Use a self-assessment to identify an area of focus that will lead to your
professional growth. You might choose to use one of the self-assessments based on the certificate
standards for your role: https://www.pesb.wa.gov/workforce-development/developing-current-
educators/pgp/pgp-forms-and-support-materials/. You might also choose to use another self-
assessment. Identify the self-assessment and area of focus you selected:
School Counselor Needs Assessment Worksheet, Criteria 2: Implements and leads others to take a
systemic approach to student needs and responsive services according to best current research
practices.
2. Standards. The area of focus for your professional growth goal needs to align to the certificate
standards. You may find the certificate standards for your role here:
https://www.pesb.wa.gov/workforce-development/developing-current-educators/certification-
standards-and-benchmarks/. Note the standard you have selected for your area of focus for
professional growth.

Standard 5.C: Counseling theories and techniques

3. Professional growth goal(s). What is your goal for this professional growth plan? Describe how this
goal relates to your self-assessment and focus area identified in question one.

Research, grow in knowledge, and share various methods to respond to behavior and discipline in
order to keep students in the classroom. This is an area for growth because keeping students in the
classroom can lead to more learning for each student in the class. After further research, I will be able
to provide better interventions of discipline practices for staff. Better interventions will result in better
student learning. Also researching and comprehending the Washington State academic standards in
order to best serve and support the students below benchmark in common core standards.
4. Intended outcomes. What will you and/or your students be able to do as a result of your
professional growth that you and/or they are not able to do now?
Students will be able to stay in class and learn throughout the whole school day. Based on this goal,
students will also decrease discipline rates and increase academics. Staff will be more informed and
practiced of responsive interventions in order to avoid sending students out to the hallways or
principal’s office.

5. Activities. Describe the specific growth activities you will engage in to obtain the identified new
learning. How will these activities positively impact student learning?

Researching evidence based Response to Interventions (RTI) such as Positive Behavioral

Intervention and Support (PBIS) and Restorative Justice (RJ) interventions. Delivering presentations
and resources to staff about RTI methods and interventions that they can use in their classrooms will
be the first step. Then, providing an updated discipline form for all staff to use. The form will have a
space to document what the incidence was, which student(s) was/were involved, and what RTI
method was used by the staff member, and whether it was effective or not. This form will be reviewed
by building administrators and me, the school counselor, to improve discipline interventions. The final
step for reviewing academics is observing the students that were documented to have one or more
behavior issue in the classroom and reviewing their academic achievements. Of the students that
have had one or more discipline referral and are below benchmark on English Language Arts, Math,
and/or Science standards, they will join me in an 8-week small group. Mindsets and Behaviors for the
small group are M 3: Sense of belonging in the school environment and B SMS 2: Demonstrate self-
discipline and self-control. The lesson topics will include classroom guidelines and expectations,
study skills, making and maintaining friendships, time management, and organization. By using the
Washington State academic standards, I will be able to better support student learning by
understanding what they need to know in order to succeed. In the end, these approaches will impact
student learning by providing a responsive yet proactive service for students and teachers. This is
proactive in the long run because these services of providing the information to teachers will help
them later on with discipline. Furthermore, this is proactive for the students since they will learn how
to behave in school as per the rules provided by the school, and increase academics by using the
tools and skills learned in the weekly group meetings.
6. Proposed evidence. Describe the evidence you plan to collect to support your goals. Evidence may
include areas beyond test scores such as attendance rates, discipline referrals, programs
implemented, student work, videos of lessons, and other student or adult data.

I plan to collect discipline refferals, and academic achievement data such as test scores from the
office manager, from teachers, and from the online databases that collect test scores. I will also utilize
indirect student services such as brief conversations with teachers in the hallways to gain an
understanding of how the interventions are working for them. Pre- and post-test data will be collected
from the staff presentations and from the 8-week small group.
