Students in my classroom come from many different backgrounds and experiences.


a teacher of music, regardless of what age, allows me to see more students than most teachers in

my school. Due to this, I get to see and learn about many different backgrounds. They each have

different likes, dislikes, learning styles, and therefore are each unique and diverse. In my

classroom they will learn and have to be able to read and write music, as well as connect

emotionally to the music they experience in my class. Each student will have different learning

needs, so as the teacher I am able to give the students what they need. For this lesson I chose a

piece that I was familiar with and have learned before. I also chose something that I knew I could

get help with. I am not an expert on Native American history, but I know people who are, which

is why I would reach out and get help, especially for the pronunciation of the words. This history

is something that is close to people living in Kansas since these lands and land near us used to be

occupied by Native Americans.

Trail of Tears by James Barnes


Objective: Students will learn to correctly pronounce the verbal words in Trail of Tears by
James Barnes with less than 1 mistake.

Lesson Sequence:

Entry Activity:

 Good Morning, everyone! You know how we have been working on Trail of Tears and
there’s some words in there that are difficult to pronounce? Well, today I’ve brought in
someone that knew my band director from high school that’s going to teach us about the
Native American culture, history, and teach us how to correctly pronounce the words in
this piece.

Activity #1

 At this point I am going to let the guest speaker take over and give the students a
presentation about the history of the Native American people, which includes the history
of the actual Trail of Tears, and teach them how to correctly pronounce the words in the


 Students in grades 9-12 will pronounce the words in Trail of Tears by James Barnes
without teacher assistance

Activity #2

 Now we’re going to go through the piece by sections and after each section I want
everyone to draw a picture or write a phrase of a piece of history that you learned today
that the section reminds you of, and as an exit ticket, you are going to show me what you
wrote on your music.
 Go through each section, stopping after each one and having the students write
what relates to what they learned today.


 Students in grades 9-12 will write a phrase, word, or draw a picture in their music above
each section representing how they feel the music relates to what they learned from the
guest presenter.
This lesson will teach my students about the history of Native Americans, and specifically

about the Trail of Tears. This relates directly to the piece they are working on titled Trail of

Tears. If I have any students who are of that descent I will ask them if they are comfortable

giving any input about the history of the culture. I will be bringing in an expert who knows more

about the culture than I do, making it to where I won’t share any misinformation and will make

sure the students learn all of the correct information. This will also allow for us to not

accidentally do anything that is offensive when pronouncing words in a different language.
