Philosophy of Education

Everyone has their own opinion on education, but in my opinion, the purpose of

education is to support and educate young children in developing the knowledge, skills, and

responsibilities for their future. I believe every child should be taught about the various subjects

needed for life, but also need to be educated on how to be respectful, mindful, and equal towards

every human-being, regardless of their social status, ethnicity, or disability. According to

www.ascd.org, “Parents and teachers want schooling to support children's ability to become

lifelong learners who are able to love, work, and act as responsible members of the community”

(ASCD, 2012), which displays the purpose of education for children as they become adults.

Teachers should not educate children for temporary knowledge, but for lifelong knowledge that

will play a huge role once they become adults.

I believe children learn best when they are taught under certain conditions and ways.

Children should be taught in a safe environment and one that promotes learning. By providing a

safe environment, children will be able to express themselves freely in the classroom without

feeling judged or being bullied. One of the features of an environment that promotes learning

include: setting routines. According to the book From Discipline to Culturally Responsive

Engagement, “Routines not only mean a smoother-functioning classroom, but they also allow

students to feel a sense of security over the course of their time in the classroom” (Pinto, 2017).

By implementing routines in the classroom, students will look forward to the next assignment

instead of feeling anxious and worried about what is coming next.

To ensure that all students are given equal access to learning, the teacher needs to observe

all of their students and accommodate to their learning needs. Teachers need to be ready to have

English learners, students with special needs, and students who are struggling academically or

emotionally in their classroom. According to www.parentcenterhub.org, “Adaptations,

accommodations, and modifications need to be individualized for students, based upon their

needs and their personal learning styles and interests” (Center for Parent Information &

Resources) which displays the importance of having equity and diversity in the classroom. For

example, I once made an observation at a classroom where there was a child who had hearing

loss. The teacher had to accommodate to the student’s need by using a device that would

transfer her voice into a device that was connected to the student’s ear. For English learners, the

teachers need to informally identify who their English learners are and what their English

proficiency is. Teachers need to display an interest and desire to teach every student and

demonstrate to them that they can learn despite their learning needs. Teachers also need to teach

their students to love one another despite where they come from or their mental or physical

abilities.

As a future teacher, I believe that all teachers need to teach students the various subjects

that are needed for their future; these subjects include: math, literacy, science, visual and

performing arts, health, and physical education. As a teacher, I will make sure that all my

assignments are fun, but also challenging to make sure my students are getting the best education

they can get while simultaneously enjoying their leaning. Teachers should be passionate and

enthusiastic towards each subject to motivate the students to learn the material. According to

greatschools.org, “By matching what is taught in the classroom to the standards in each subject

area, students (and their parents and teachers) will know what teachers should be teaching, what

students should be learning and what they will be tested on” (Great Schools, 2012), which

displays the importance of standards/frameworks to both teachers and students. I will make sure

I am using the curriculum standards and frameworks to confirm my students are acquiring the

best education they can receive. During the school day, teachers should make it a habit to write

down the standards on the board so students can know what is being taught and what should be

learned.

In my opinion, there are several characteristics that effective teachers share. These

characteristics include: having the ability to develop a trusting relationship with their students,

have a great personality towards their students, and having the ability to engage all of their

students to learn and participate in their classroom. By implementing these characteristics,

teachers will allow their students to gain trust in them and also allow them to have a productive,

safe, and positive learning environment. According to cndls.georgetown.edu, “As a teacher, you

are a role model who sets the tone for the class” (Georgetown CNDLS), which presents the

importance of a teacher’s role in the classroom. Teachers should set goals for themselves to

learn and develop professionally; this will allow them to grow as a teacher and become more

efficient.
