Essay Proposal: Rhetorical Analysis

To: Alexander Swiger

Subject: Neighborhood Helpers

Proposed Passion Project: I’m very passionate about making a difference in the community,
I feel that a great way of showing that is to make a physical difference that everyone will
notice as they either drive by or simply step outside. I would like to have myself and maybe 5
other people help clean up around the neighborhood.

 Indirect/Direct Service: My community needs to be cleaned up, needs new trashcans

and things that will make it easy access for people to keep clean.
 Advocacy: I don’t think anyone would be against it but, I will make it very clear by
putting signs and posting information that everyone should contribute in this
difference.
 Education: what does the community need to know and what will you do to help? They
need to be aware that the messier it gets around the neighborhood the more dangerous
it is, they also need to be aware that if this makes an impact in our community it can
help so much more than just us.

Text for Analysis: How to organize a neighborhood cleanup in 12 easy steps, Bob Horton.

Reason: Based off this article that I found online it explains the importance of cleaning up and
it shows the steps I have to take to accomplish that.

Example Rhetorical Appeals: 1. Set A Date For The Cleanup:

2. Choose An Overall Project Coordinator:
3. The Overall Project Coordinator Assigns Sub-committee Responsibilities
4. Publicity:
5. Volunteers:
6. Responsibility To Arrange for Collected Trash Removal
7. Party & Refreshments:
8. Tools & Supplies
9. Field Support & Documentation
10. Execution
11. Follow-up
12. Set a date for the next cleanup!

SOPs:

NOTE: All essay, per syllabus and department standards, must be approved by instructor. Unapproved
topics will not be accepted or graded. Memos serve as a method of keeping track of approvals, so there
should never be a question about topic approval.

NOTE: You may change your topic during the course of essay writing, but a new memo must be
submitted and approved. Do not feel overly stressed about these memos; consider them insurance for both
of us. Submit new memos through email.

NOTE: Maintain paper trail of written agreements. While verbal agreements are often legally binding,
they are also difficult to support in the court of law. Having written agreements is better, so let’s make
sure we have them in this course as you would in the real world.
