1
PLACE CLOTHES IN WASHER.
Put unfolded clothes loosely in the tub up to the top row
of holes for maximum load. Do not pack or wrap items
around the agitator. See MA YT AG LAUNDERING
GUIDE for suggestions on sorting into wash loads. Be
sure to empty all pockets. Many a wash load has turned
into a real problem because of an overlooked pin, cray-
on, lipstick, eraser, knife, nail, or other similar objects
being left in a pocket.

2
ADD DETERGENT OR SOAP.
You may use any laundry detergent. If your water sup-
pl y is truly soft (0-3 grains), you may use a laundry
soap if you wish. Add detergent to the wash basket by
moving clothes away from agitator and pouring mea-
sured amount around agitator unless detergent manu-
facturer instructs otherwise. When using soap, be sure
to sprinkle it evenly around agitator.
The amount of detergent or soap to use depends on
how big the load is, how dirty it is, and how hard the
water is. See MA YTAG LAUNDERING GUIDE for
correct amounts to use; inadequate amounts may
cause greying of fabrics and other problems.
Wipe up any spills of liquid laundry detergent on the
washer.

3
ADD GRANULAR BLEACH, if desired.
Granular bleaches (oxygen-based) may be added fol-
lowing the instructions on the package. CAUTION:
Liquid bleach (chlorine-based) should not be added
at this time as it will damage clothes.
NOTE: All bleaches, whether liquid or granular, are
powerful chemicals and can cause fabric dam-
age if not used properly. See MAYTAG
LAUNDERING GUIDE for details on using
bleach.
4ADD FABRIC SOFTENER, if desired.
Add recommended amount to cup in top of agitator.
The cup may be lifted out for easy filling . Add wa-
ter to bring liquid level just below openings at the
rim of the cup. Diluted fabric softener will automati-
cally be added to the final rinse .
When using fabric softener, do not interrupt the spin
following wash because the softener will go into the
washbasket at the wrong time.
Periodically clean the cup and the cap of the filter
with hot water and a soft brush or rag .

5
FIRMLY PUSH ONE BUTTON TO SET
WASH/RINSE WATER TEMPERATURE.
HOT/ WARM - Wash water will be the temperature
of the water coming from your hot water faucet.
Rinse water will be a mixture of water coming from
your hot and cold water faucets, except when the
permanent press cycle is selected; then it will be
cold . Use this setting for whites, for heavily soiled
colorfast articles, when you prefer a warm rinse fol-
lowing a hot wash.

Use this setting for delicates, for colored articles not
heavily soiled, and for permanent press garments
with light to moderate soil.
COLD/ COLD - Wash and rinse water will be the
temperature of the water coming from your cold wa-
ter faucet. Use this setting to minimize fading of
brightly colored articles and shrinking of washable
woolens.

Remember, for best washing results, clothes must Small Medium Large

circulate freely . If too little water is used , it may re- Load Load Load
sult in poor washing action, and in certain cases, it
may create wear on fabrics being washed.
SMALL LOAD- Use this setting when tub is less than
V2 full of clothes. Tub fills with 9 gallons (7.5 Imperial
gallons; 34. 1 liters).
This level of water is below where the lint filter can
function.
MEDIUM LOAD- Use this setting when tub is from
V2 to Y4 full of clothes. Tub fills with 12 V2 gallons (I 0.4
Imperial gallons; 47 .3 liters).
LARGE LOAD- Use this setting when tub is from Y4
to full. Tub fills with 16 gallons (13.3 Imperial gallons;
60.6 liters).
NOTE: When laundering permanent press items,
garments of delicate construction, washable
woolens, or loosely knit articles, never use
less than the "MEDIUM LOAD" setting.
This will minimize shrinkage, wrinkling, and
pulling of seams.

7
CLOSE LID.
This washer is designed so that it will not operate when
the lid is open. Should you open the lid during a cycle,
the washer will stop; when you close the lid and pull
out on control dial knob, the washer will resume its
cycle at the point where it was interrupted.

8
PUSH IN KNOB AND TURN
TO SET THE CYCLE.
For REGULAR loads, set dial as shown to proper
wash time (6-8 minutes for normally soiled clothes;
up to I 0 minutes for more heavily soiled loads; and
less for lightly soiled).

4
For KNITS and PERMANENT PRESS loads, set
dial as shown (3-5 minutes for knits; 5-6 minutes
for normally soiled permanent press; up to 8 min-
utes for more heavily soiled permanent press items;
and less than 5 minutes for lightly soiled permanent
press articles).
This cycle can also be used for non-permanent press
items when two rinses are needed.

For DELICATE loads, set dial at the 8 minute mark

to wash garments of delicate construction, sheer fab-
rics , lace-trimmed and embroidered articles, lingerie,
foundation garments, and washable woolens. The
washer will fill, then agitate and soak alternately, and
proceed through the rinse and final spin. See page 7
for specific times.

For pre-washing very heavily soiled loads, set dial as

shown. Use a generous amount of soap or detergent.
When washer stops, add usual amount of soap or de-
tergent and reset for the maximum washtime on
REGULAR wash as explained above.

9
PULL OUT ON KNOB
TO START WASHER.
NOTE: If an unbalanced load occurs during the spin,
the washer will automatically stop. If this
happens, push in the knob, open the lid, re-
distribute the load, close the lid and pull out
knob.

5
10
TO USE LIQUID BLEACH
Determine the proper amount to use by following rec-
ommendations on the bottle for the number of gallons
of water in the tub (See No. 6 above) . Dilute this
amount of liquid bleach in one quart of water. Then
add the diluted bleach to the wash tub a few minutes
after the washing action has started.
NOTE: Improper use of liquid chlorine bleach (con-
taining sodium hypochlorite) will cause holes
in fabrics and color loss. Always dilute liquid
bleach as recommended before adding to the
washer.
Be careful whenever you use a liquid bleach .
Do not pour directly on fabrics . Wipe up spills
with a paper towel.

11
TO SOAK:
After washer has run a few minutes, lift the lid to stop
the washer and let clothes soak. To start washing
again, close the lid and pull out on control dial knob.

12
After each day's use, remove lint filter from top of
agitator as shown, and remove lint from the screen.
Because of the effectiveness of the draining system,
normally there will be little lint on the filter except
when washing very linty loads such as terrycloth
towels, throw rugs, bedspreads, blankets, etc.

13
Be sure to turn off the water faucets after finishing
the day's washing to shut off the water supply to the
washer and thus prevent the possibility of damage from
escaping water. ·
