Scanning a Book to a Multi-Page PDF Document

by Cooper Temple

The rise of tablet computers, such as Apple’s iPad, and e-book

readers, such as Amazon’s Kindle, has resulted in a rise in
popularity for electronic versions of books. If you want to use
one with a book that is not available in an electronic format,
scan it into a common format such as Portable Document
Format (PDF). You'll need a scanner and a PDF writing program
with a feature that allows you to combine separate files.

1. Install a PDF writing program that has a “merge” feature,

which allows you to create multi-page PDF files. Many free
programs are available. PDFill (pdfill.com), which is available as
a free download, is used in the following steps. NitroPDF (nitropdf.com) and Foxit PDF (foxitsoftware.com) are also
available as free downloads and follow a similar process for merging files.

2. Place the first page of the book from which you want to create a multi-page PDF on to the scanner glass. Press the
scan button on the scanner, which will open the scanning program that you installed with your scanner. Click the
“Output” menu and select the “PDFill” option. Click the “Scan” button on the scanning program, which will open a
separate window.

3. Click the “Save in” menu and select a folder in which to save the scanned page. Type a name that distinguishes the file
as the first page into the “File name” field, for example “page001.” Click the “Save” button. Repeat this process for each
page from the book that you want to use in the multi-page PDF. In order to make the merging process easier, name each
file in a way that specifies its position in the multi-page PDF, for example, “page002,” “page003,” etc.

4. Open PDFill. Click the “Tools” icon on the toolbar, which will open a separate window. Click the “Merge PDF Files”
button, which will open a window that will allow you to add the files necessary to create the multi-page PDF. Click the
“Add a PDF File” button, which will open a dialogue window. Click the “Look in” menu and choose the folder in which you
saved the separate scanned pages. Click each file that you want to merge into the multi-page PDF document while
holding down the “Control” (Ctrl) key. Click the “Open” button.
