Notice the numbers reducing from n

until they reach the number (n-r+1).
This last term (n-r+1) avoids a zero
in case n=r.

D. Discussing New

arranged in a mini circular garden, in how them?
many ways can Jaya arranged them?
Equation (2) becomes:

P (n, r)=[n .(n-1).(n-2)…. (n-r+1)] X

[(n-r).(n-r-1)….(3)(2)(1) / (n-r).(n-r-
1)….(3)(2)(1)]

A closer look at the numerator of

Equation (4) shows that the numbers
are reducing from n to 1. Here is the
numerator again:
[n .(n-1).(n-2)…. (n-r+1)] X [(n-r).(n-
r-1)….(3)(2)(1)

n-1 is 1 less than n and (n-r) is one

less than (n-r+1) and so on until 1
which is less than 2 by one.

We can safely conclude therefore that

the numerator = n! Since n! =n. (n-1).
(n-2)…..(3).(2).(1)

Equation (4)’s denominator (n-r).(n-

r-1)….(3)(2)(1) is in effect Equation
(3) which equals (n-r)!.

Hence the numerator is n! and the

denominator is (n-r)!
Meaning:

nPr = P(n, r) = n!/(n-r)!

E. Discussing New Example 1.

Concepts and
Practicing New Given the 4-letter word READ. In how
Skills #2 many ways can we arrange its letters,
3 at a time?

We apply the Fundamental Counting

Principle and multiply:

4 . 3 . 2 = 24.
Thus, there are 24 possible ways of
arranging the 4 letters of READ taking
3 of them at a time. We also say that
the 4 letters of READ, taken 3 at a
time, have 24 permutations. One of
them is R – E – D.

Verify this result.

Let us take a second look at the

example above.
Remember: n = 4,
r=3
4.3.2 = n(n – 1)(n – 2)
Notice that the first factor is n, and the
succeeding factors decrease by 1 each
time. Look at the last factor:
n – 2 = n – (3 – 1)
= n – (r – 1) or
n–r+1
Take note also that there are r factors
in all, starting with n.

In addition, since
P(n, r) = n(n – 1)(n – 2)…(n – r + 1)
= n(n – 1)(n-2)…(n – r + 1)(n – r)!
(n – r)!

n!
Then, P(n, r) =
( n−r ) !
