Engineering
(ITME 1101)
Semester II 2013 / 2014
Prepared by:
Dr. Ahmed Issa
Lecture # 2
Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology
Al Azhar University Gaza
SEM II 2013 / 2014
Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is perhaps the oldest

engineering discipline.
Civil engineers design and supervise the
construction of buildings, roads and highways,
bridges, dams, tunnels, mass transit systems,
and airports.
They are also involved in the design and
supervision of municipal water supplies and
sewage systems.

2 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and electronic engineering is the

largest engineering discipline.
Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and
supervise the manufacturing of electrical
equipment, including lighting and wiring for
buildings, cars, buses, trains, ships, and
aircrafts; power generation and transmission
equipment for utility companies; electric motors
found in various products; control devices; and
radar equipment.

3 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Mechanical Engineering

 The mechanical engineering discipline, which

has evolved over the years as new technologies
have emerged, is one of the broadest
engineering disciplines.
Mechanical engineers are involved in the design,
development, testing, and manufacturing of
machines, robots, tools, power generating
equipment such as steam and gas turbines,
heating, cooling, and refrigerating equipment,
and internal combustion engines.

4 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace engineers design, develop, test, and

supervise the manufacture of commercial and
military aircraft, helicopters, spacecraft, and
missiles.
They may work on projects dealing with research
and development of guidance, navigation, and
control systems.

5 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is a new discipline that

combines biology, chemistry, medicine, and
engineering to solve a wide range of medical
and health-related problems.
They apply the laws and the principles of
chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering to
design artificial limbs, organs, imaging systems,
and devices used in medical procedures.

7 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Software Engineering
Software engineering is a systematic and disciplined
approach to developing software.
It applies both computer science and engineering
principles and practices to the creation, operation, and
maintenance of software systems.
Software engineers design and supervise the construction
of computer based systems, software architecture,
algorithms, computer networks, web-applications, data
security, software for any devices and instruments that
operate on microprocessors, etc.
Computer and software engineering is an ongoing field of
development requiring continuous update of knowledge.

8 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Computer and Communications Engineering

Communications engineering is a new branch evolved with

technological advancement in the fields of data/media
processing, transmission, protection, display, etc.
Communications engineers design and supervise the
construction of instruments, devices, telecommunication
infrastructures, wireless control and supervisory, computer
networking.
They are also involved in the design and supervision of
many software applications that handle media/data inside
telecommunication devices.
Computer and software engineering is inseparable from
communications engineering, therefore, the program title
is mixed.

9 Introduction to Engineering (ITME 1101), Lecture 2, Dr. Ahmed Issa SEM II 2013/2014
Mechatronics Engineering
Mechatronics engineering is a new branch evolved with
technological advancement in the fields of electronics,
mechanisms and software engineering, microprocessors,
automation, control, sensors etc.
Mechatronics engineers design and supervise the
construction of instruments, devices, mechanisms, control
and automation.
They are also involved in the design and supervision of
many software applications, robotics, production systems,
industrial automation and many modern electronic
devices.
Computer and software engineering is inseparable from
Mechatronics engineering.
