Leisure, Tourism and Sport Worksheet 1

(Changing Leisure Patterns)

Definitions needed for this unit:

Leisure: Any freely chosen activity or experience that takes place in non-work time.

Tourism: the commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest.

Sport - a physical activity involving a set of rules or customs. The activity may be competitive. 

Recreation: A leisure time activity undertaken voluntarily and for enjoyment.

Domestic tourism: Tourism within the country of residency.

International tourism: Tourism outside the country of residency.

Day trips (day tourism): Visits to places of interest e.g. the beach or a ruin, but without staying
overnight.

Mass tourism or package holiday: Large-scale tourism when flights, accommodation, tours and
transfers are booked together and often part of a group.

Sustainable tourism: Tourism that preserves primary tourist resources and supports the livelihoods
and culture of local people.

Ecotourism: Like sustainable tourism, but with a focus on the natural environment.

Heritage tourism: Tourism based on historic legacy as its main focus e.g. natural landscape, historical
buildings.

Honeypot tourism site: A location that attracts a large number of tourists. The Eiffel Tower in Paris
and Grand Canyon in the USA are examples

Adventure tourism:  is a type of tourism in which tourist do some adventures activities like as


skydiving, hill climbing, scuba diving. Adventure tourism is very popular among young age tourists.

Primary tourist/recreational resources: Pre-existing tourist attractions that often exist naturally e.g.
the weather, wildlife, beaches, indigenous people or mountains.

Secondary tourist/recreational resources: Facilities that have been purposefully built for tourists e.g.
hotels, restaurants, golf courses and airports.

Resorts: A settlement where the primary function is tourism. Resorts are normally associated with the
coast. Large hotel complexes are considered to be resorts.

All-inclusive: When tourists pay a hotel complex one price which includes all meals, drinks,
entertainment, activities, etc. All-inclusive holidays are very common in the Mediterranean and the
Caribbean.

Low-cost (budget) airlines: Airlines that offer cheaper than normal flights, by removing add ons like
airport check-in, in flight meals, checked baggage and pre-selected seats.

2. Use the graph above to describe global patterns and trends in annual hours
worked from 1970 to 2006.
3. Compare and contrast the amount of time taken for different activities
between Mexico and Norway.

4. Explain the differences in leisure and other activities between Mexico and
Norway.

Using terms from definitions section on page 1 of this worksheet, and the readings
below to answer question 5.

Type: Business tourism


Definition: Travel for the purposes of work.
Characteristics: Often city-based, with workers staying in high quality hotels near their
offices. Chain hotels are common (such as Mariott or Hyatt).
Type: MICE tourism
Definition: Meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism.
Characteristics: Very similar to business tourism, but with larger numbers of business people
coming together for events.

Type: Leisure tourism


Definition: Travel for the purposes of enjoyment.
Characteristics: There are many types of leisure tourism, which can be split into mass
tourism and niche tourism.

Type: Mass tourism


Definition: Tourist activities on a mass scale; many people engage in the same activity in the
same location
Characteristics: The traditional relaxing beach holiday (Spain, Thailand). Usually short-term
e.g. one or two weeks. Families are well catered for. Hotels, restaurants and activities are
usually offered in the tourist’s home language.

Type: Niche tourism


Definition: Tourist activities that are popular among a small group of people. Also known as
specialised tourism.
Characteristics: Often deliberately aim to provide an experience beyond relaxation, such as
engaging with a new culture, participating in voluntary work, or experiencing the natural
environment. Other types include visiting historic sites, taking part in physical adventure
activities (such as mountain climbing or scuba diving), or receiving medical care.
