When does the Chinese Immersion Program start?
And when can I begin applying?
Starting in September 2011, the Chinese Immersion Pro-
gram at the King School will have its first classes at the kin-
dergarten (JK/K) level. You can apply for the new program
from January 3 to 31, 2011, after this period the Kindergarten
Lottery will be run and opportunities for seats may be lim-
ited.
How do I apply to the Chinese Immersion Program
at the King School?
In order to apply, please list “King School Chinese Immer-
sion” under your school choices on your registration applica-
tion.  In order to receive a higher likelihood of placement,
January is the best month to register since seat availability
will be limited after January 31st.
How many classrooms will there be for the Chi-
nese Immersion Program? What will be the capac-
ity for each class?
There will be 2 immersion classrooms with a maximum of
20 students in each one.
Will JK/K students be in the same classroom?
Yes, the 2 classrooms will have a mix of JK/K students.
Can existing King junior kindergarten students
transfer into the Chinese Immersion Program?
And do they receive preference?
Yes, existing students at the King School will have prefer-
ence for admittance to the Immersion Program before the
Kindergarten lottery is run.
If I enroll my child in the non-immersion program
at the King School, does my child receive prefer-
ence should space become available in the im-
mersion classrooms?
Yes, students at the King School will receive preference on
the wait list and will have the priority to transfer to the Im-
mersion Program should they meet language criteria out-
lined below should space become available in the kindergar-
ten or later in the first grade as the program advances.

Does sibling preference help secure spots in the
Immersion Program?
Yes, younger sibling(s) of existing King School students will
receive preference on their application in January 2011.
If my child is currently enrolled in junior kinder-
garten in another Cambridge Public School, and
we want to switch to the King Chinese Immersion
Program, do I go through the same registration
procedure as someone who is entering the school
system for the very first time?
No, you will need to complete a transfer request at the Fam-
ily Resource Center. If you complete the transfer form by
January 31st, 2011, and if there is space available and you
meet the language criteria outlined below, you will be able
to stay at your current school for the remainder of the year
and enter the program in September 2011.
What is the assignment selection criteria for the
Chinese Immersion Program?
In order for the program to be effective as a dual-immersion
program, the program will be composed of a ratio of no
more than 70% students proficient in either Chinese or Eng-
lish. The ratio can be expanded by a +/-10% ratio.  
How will my child’s Chinese proficiency be as-
sessed?
You will fill out the home-language survey in your applica-
tion packet, then make an appointment with the Family Re-
source Center to have your child tested in Mandarin Chi-
nese.  Language testing will be done by Immersion Pro-
gram Coordinator Vivian Tam to test students’ proficiency
in Chinese. This will determine their qualification to be as-
signed as a proficient Chinese speaker or an English
speaker.
Does Socio-Economic Status (SES) matter? What
if my child is on an IEP or 504 plan?
Assignment to the Chinese Immersion Program is by lan-
guage proficiency not by SES. The program is being de-
signed to handle a broad spectrum of learners.

What contributes to a successful immersion stu-

dent?

Continued parental support in and out of the classroom and

commitment to the program for at least 3 or more years.

中英雙語班在甚麼時候正式開始授課？家長應在甚麼時
候為孩子辦理入學申請?
中 英雙語課程將於二零一一年九月份起在馬丁路德金小
學的幼兒園高低班開始授課。家長們應按照劍橋公校的
入學常規，於一月三日到一月三十一日期間，在
FRC（Family Resource Center 校區入學辦事處）完成
入學申請手續以爭取在第一輪抽籤時獲得第一志願的學
位分配。
家長應如何報名加入該中英雙語班?
請在FRC的入學報名表的學校選擇欄上填上 “King
School Chinese Immersion” 為第一志願。家長們若能在
一月份完成入學報名手續將會為貴子女提供最有利的入
學機會。
一共有幾個雙語班？每班有幾名學生？
兩班，每班將不超逾二十名學生。
幼兒園高低班將會被分配在同一個課室 ？
對，兩個雙語班將會是高低混合班。
在馬丁路德金博士小學就讀的幼兒園低班生有入雙語班
的優先資格 ？ 家庭收入水平會影響學位分配
對，目前在該校就讀的學生有優先進雙語班的資格。可

將會獲得入讀中英雙語班的學位分配。
中英雙語班有 些入學分配原則？
為使雙語教育達到最有效的成果，每一個雙語班應在中
英母語上有百分之三十對百分之七十的學生組合，並允
許有百分之十左右的彈性。
校區會怎樣審核申請入學孩子們的中文水平？
家長們應把在入學申請資料內的家庭語言背景調查表填
好，並向FRC為入學孩子預約安排中文審核口試。雙語
項目統籌人譚小姐會與FRC配合，審核孩子們的中文口
語水平，以使學生們在學位分配時達到最合適的安排。
？接受特殊教育服務的
學生也能加入雙語班 ？
到目前為止，語言背景是入學分配的唯一標準。家庭收
入不會對雙語項目的學位分配造成影響。此外，該雙語
項目的模式能迎合孩子們各種不同的學習需要。

學生們應有一個十分支持雙語學習的家庭環境，家長應
