PROPOSAL A (as part of Tangled Embankment)

Work Title: Forest Murmurs

Instrumentation: snare drum with seed rattle + tape

The proposed work, Forest Murmurs, will be a short work of around 3 minutes for snare drum
and pod/seed rattle. Highly evocative and atmospheric, use of a variety of simulated sounds
and field recordings will make up the soundscape of the tape beneath. Blended beneath it,
and opening introduction will make use of the rattle, interacting with the space around and
the surface of the snare drum. Wire brushes will then be employed for a brief interlude into
the main section of the piece.

A somewhat displaced feeling will build the tension, using both drumsticks and a superball
mallet if available to emit swirling and bracken-like sounds from the surface of the drum.
Crunches of the snare sound will blend into the tape part and eventually dissolve into the
sounds of birds and the beginning sound of wire brushes, fading into oblivion.

This work is dedicated to Benjamin Damann
